Wow, I have been screwing people royally on the shipping charges.  When it asks how I felt about the shipping, I usually say it was neither reasonable nor unreasonable.  To me if somebody is charging $5 for something that costs $3.80 to ship, that doesn't strike me as GREAT but it certainly isn't horrible either.  Little did I know...

Here's another reply when I directly asked them, "Is there a direct punitive action taken when I rate someone as less than 5 stars on a DSR?"

Dear Jonathan,

Thank you for writing eBay in regard to leaving Detailed Seller Ratings.

I'm more than glad to answer your original questions on leaving these
ratings.

The ratings that you leave for sellers impact their growth as eBay
sellers. Getting low ratings mean that they may not get the top-ratings
that they may be striving for. It may also hinder them from being a
PowerSeller or a Top-Rated Seller and the perks that come achieving
these standards. There may not be actual penalties but their ability to
continue selling depends on their feedback and the detailed seller
ratings left for them.

I hope I was able to answer your questions. Have a great eBay day!

Sincerely,
Paula Anne B.

Gee, I could never have figured that out! Seriously, if one of my students wrote something like that, they would get a low grade (and therefore may not get the top-grade they were looking for)!

:suspect:

I can't say it's the most mush-mouthed piece of corporate prose I've seen... but it's a nice example.

... I recall there was a car company communique about 'inadvertent hood fly-up' that still takes the cake, mainly because of the disconnect between the prose and the dire consequences of the event it described.

How long will it be before Ebay incorporates credit scoring also for fees?

I just calculated my last five transactions for Ebay/PayPal; total percentage in fees was 23.7%.

I have now sent them a third and final request for information in regards to their DSR regulations. This one was a little more "direct", and possibly a little impolite, but hopefully I'll get a semi-straight answer.

If not, I'll track down a phone number and start bugging their operators for a real answer!

So is it still worth using it? Why not just go to boot sales or similar (or use online trade forums for specialist stuff).

Because the amount of money you'll get out of me at a car boot sale vs ebay is tiny  I get MUCH better deals at boot sales buying wise (although no epic in sight) and expect to pay FAR less.

Every time one of these threads comes up, or I just get ticked off with eBay (happens a lot), it refires my idle thoughts about running an auction section here!  :glare:

Or at least a more formal trading board

Also, don't forget that ebid has been growing in popularity...
