Post subject:  FCW Newbie questions

Hi there! I got my copy of FCW recently and am reading it at the moment. I really like the basic ideas of combat and get most of the rules for now, even if I had no time to play a match yet. What still confuses me a bit is obviously the most important thing - command units.
Since there's not much information on how to build a custom force, I wonder how many command units I should have in my army. Since they are expensive I don't want to buy much of them, since they are that important I cannot have enough it seems... what is a good balance here?
The other awkward thing to me is their movement range. Surely it's important they they reach positions on the battlefield rather quickly - but still I wonder about command units WALKING 60cms across the field (like they do in the FCW lists for Grandma Wendy armies, f.e. the Hunter-Scavenger-Mob CO has Movement 60F). With Command armies that fast and not directly targetable to the enemy, there seems to be no reason to have command vehicles at all, right?

Maybe someone could enlighten me a little bit, please. I didn't find much information about this in the rule-book yet. On the other hand english is not my mother tongue, maybe I got something wrong. Thanks for reading, guys! :)

Hi, you need to think of command units as just markers to represent where abouts on the field your officers are located. The types of models on the stand don't really matter as command units do not fight as part of the battlegroup and are used to facilitate the games mechanics of command and control. They have large movement distances as they are only moved at the end of the command phase, so vehicles, infantry, or both on your command bases does not matter in the grand scheme of things as a command unit cost the same points no matter what models you have on the stand. Just think of them a miniature dioramas if you want.

The army lists give you clear guides as to how many command units you may have per 1000 points.

Hope this helps.

This more than helps, thank you very much! I allready found that "limit" column in the army lists, but now I see that things are just a little bit more abstract than I'm used to from other games. :)

Glad to have helped you. If you have not already joined the Specialist Military Publishing forum i would recommend that you do so. The forum has a dedicated FWC section and you are likely to get prompt and experienced guidance from the players and the games author for that matter on there.
