The price is ok, no doubt about that.

Pixelgeek, did you by any chance finish working on the conversion of the GT scenario for SFC (or FWC as the final product is named).

Not yet. The rules were changing a fair bit while we were playtesting and then I got swamped with work. While I was testing I was focusing on testing the rules and scenarios as they were in the book and didn't want to spend time giving feedback that might have been "tainted" by playing a non-standard scenario.

The final version of the rules is on its way and as soon as I get it I will start work on it again.

I suspect that there will be a few Squat v. Eldar games to try the scenario out :-)

I went to order it, but when it came to the final paypal page and it was $50.40 (Canadian), I just had to close the browser tab.

I'm probably not the ideal customer for the game.  I like it when my miniatures look good, love painted terrain and all that.  But I have no desire to pay extra for high production values, colour pictures and especially not pay over 50% of the price of the book in shipping charges.

A printer friendly PDF would be ideal for me.  If the publisher figured out what his profit per dead tree copy was and charged and added a small mark-up over that, I'd probably buy it.  One of the major advantages of selling PDFs is that you can get the same level of profit without tying up capital in print runs and shipping/distribution.

Or produced a black and white edition and offered it through a print on demand/distribtion system on the same continent as me, I'd probably order that.

Either option can be done in a way that gives the publisher the same profit as shipping the high production value version over an ocean, but without passing on extra costs to me.

What got me interested in buying Future Commander was what I heard about the rules.  I want to pay for the rules.  Not for glossy pages, pictures and putting it on a plain to send over an ocean.

Another thing I don't like is paying taxes to a jurisdiction of which I'm not a resident.  Either Specialist Military Publishing Ltd is small enough that they're not collecting VAT at all, or they're charging me it anyway.  If they are that small, than I think they should look into distribution methods that work well for their size (print on demand and PDF delivery).  If they are collecting VAT, I don't appreciate the 17.5% gouge.

So between the high shipping charges, the high cost of the book, my desire for rules over high production values, and VAT issues, my reaction can only be sticker shock and no sale.  But I could be a sale.  My money is only a PDF away.

On the pdf side wargames stuff seems to do quite well. There is a bit of saving but still a lot of purchases. Maybe the 2nd edition/error correcting reprint could be available as a pdf?

That would be awesome.  PDF sales are working well for a lot of small companies.  Even larger ones.  Wizards of the Coast is offering all of their Dungeons and Dragons products as PDFs as well as in print.

There is nothing wrong with a high cost, high production value set of rules.  I've seen Blitzkrieg Commander and it is beautiful.  It's just not something I'm looking for.  I want the rules of the game delivered to me in a way that both maximizes the profits of the publisher and reduces the end cost to me.  And that's a printer friendly PDF.

If I'm not the target market, I'm totally cool with that.  There are lots of great PDF games available.  Even Epic:A is available as a free PDF.

This question comes up on the BKC forums every so often and Pete has always been against pdfs. I suggest having a search on his forum for his take on the issue.

Well piracy is one issue.

Places like RPGNow have watermarks in their PDFs so its easy to track down who is putting files up on Bittorrent

One?
Seeds of War.

Ea is playable by concensus and the hard work of this community.
Damn I am negative, sorry folks, really.

If you got others I would love to see them.
Just as for 6mm SF-models, a list of applicable rules would be lovely.

This thread isn't really the place, but here's a list of free ones (I'm sure there are more):

Epic: A
NetEpic
Heresy
Seeds of War
Command Horizon
Prophecy of War
Fast And Dirty (with the mass battle file)
Dirtside II
Exodus Wars

Not free ones:
Future Commander
Reaper CAV 2nd edition (made for 10mm, but works fine with 6mm)
Classic Battletech
Iron Cow (Available through Brigade Models)
Wardogs by Majestic 12

Some of these don't necessarily have army lists for every possibel miniature-- something Future Commander does (yes!  Got this post back on topic).  So you have to fudge it yourself and essentially design your own scenarios.  FAD (Fast And Dirty) is intentionally like this.  It's expressly not a tournament time game and has no points systems and encourages everyone to get a feel for the rules with a few games and then design scenarios off of that.

The fact that Future Commander has a points system as well as army lists is a big draw for me.  It lets me have both the scenario based approach and a points vs. points game when I want it.  That's definitely appealing.

At the same time though, points systems often don't work well.  Many times gamers can come up with better scenarios after they get a good feel of a rules set and figure out what they want.

I know your pain! When I order stuff from States it costs like hell to ship them to Europe, just postages could rise above tax-free limit (45 euro).

But I would not buy PDF, never have. But if I could only get FWC via PDF I would buy it.

Yeah, I placed my order just minute ago.

To buy a PDF youd want both a clour printer and a binder of some sort.
Which would work if there was an abundance to be had... And you want to have it all made by yourself.

But the print on demand wasn't a bad idea, but in the end it would be more expencive, wouldn'it? Unless someone makes it a fully automated process that is.

Anyhow, confirmation on order under way recieved.  8v)
