Hi,

Looking to organise a local informal tournament based in Newcastle Upon Tyne amongst our gaming group (about ten of us).

Looking for some advice on setting it up, can't seem to find much in the way of available written support, would appreciate any pointers or guidance? Have been looking into formats and such, but figure a wealth of experience must be available on this forum!

The Epic UK tournament PDF might be a good starting point. http://epic-uk.co.uk/rules/EpicUKRulesPack.pdf

Cheers for that bud, any idea on the minimum number of games played at Epic UK stuff? It's the actual format I'm most interested in, s this is a Swiss style points system rather than round robin (which is very long time wise)?

For a 1 dayer 3 games at 3k, generally allowing 2 1/2 hrs per game.

Random 1st round draw then swiss with players not allowed to play each other twice.

Mr Gonzo advised me to try "Warscore" for the swiss pairing though I'm curious what you use Steve54?

I have everyone write their name at the top of a piece of paper. After each game they write their score and their opponent on that piece of paper. I sort the papers by the sum of the scores and pair people off based on that score/who've they played so far/who've they haven't played a lot. Works well enough.

Other than that:

Have one more table than necessary (e.g. 10 players => 6 tables) for some variety.
Set up the terrain for them, have one player pick the board and the other pick the side.
If people are new/rusty, figure 3/3.5 hours a round.
Take a look at the 5-minute warm-up FAQ and lay down "tournament defaults" in case people can't agree.

I agree with Dave, pen and paper are the simplest way of sorting out scores. I have copied Steve54/other in that each player has a sheet where you note who they are playing and the result for each round. On the other side of the paper you keep your running total for their points scored. After each round highest scorers play each other etc. When making the following round draw, you check if the players have played each other before and then compensate with the next closest. First round is generally random although seeding might be appropriate in some cases.

Not really sure why that document wouldn't work just fine. After all, we all play the same game. List selection is and always will be the decision of tournament organizer anyways.

You can try GOEPP. Its short for Göttinger Paarungs Programm ( Göttingen is a city, then pairing program). Its available in several languages, free and can be used to import export from www.tabletopturniere.de, a webpage dedicated to European tournaments. The page is availiable in english as well. You can find GOEPP there.
GOEPP pairs via swiss, checks towns, teams, armies and tables and more so that none is used twice - if you want to. You can use whatever scoring system you want. Far easier than pen and paper and less hassle than Excel sheets

Sounds just like Warscore!

Will check it out myself. Always good to know about options. :)

You can switch the language by clicking on "Datei" and then on "Sprache ändern". In the Dropdown Box you can select either
German, English, French or Dutch as prefered language.

I've used the GOEPP program it's really neat. Does swiss pairings. It worked very well with 14 players in a 3 game tournament. I used it in conjunction with a modified epicUK score system (see the pdf mentioned earlier).

But when there was just 12 of us with several restrictions (no mirror matches, no player twice, 3 playing groups) in play, then it couldn't handle that in the third last round pairings.

Basically i can recomend it for larger tournaments. Smaller ones like 12 players or less is probably quite easy to do by pen and paper anyway.
