Now I know August is a long way away, but you can budget and spread your entry and accommodation costs if you book early :D

Epic will be back, giving you the traditional 6 games at 4,000 points. The early start on Saturday and late finish to truly test your Epic A mettle.

Tickets can be booked here - http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/britcon-2 ... 7928543487

And accommodation in student halls here - https://www.meeting.co.uk/confercare/bhgs/

No option for the none en suite rooms it seems this year.

I haven't built up enough good will from the wife to attend this, especially since I'm coming to the oxford event this year.... one year I *will* come to Britcon!!

Definitely coming & bringing the wife (although she will not be gaming and probably won't set foot in the venue. She did set foot in the hall last year and met Dave. Think that was enough for her ;) ).

Simon, offer to spend stupid amounts on accommodation and tell her there's a spa. (Just don't let on that the spa gets booked out really early and you only have to pay for the expensive hotel room.)

Tim spending a fortune on hotel again this year.

Have bought my ticket. Having an organised moment, it won't last.

I'll throw this out there for discussion.

The BHGS has an option for players to play only 5 games at Britcon, allowing either the late Friday or Saturday game to be missed.

Would people be tempted to go to Britcon if it was a two day event, so you only need one nights accommodation? Only down side is you will need to be at Manchester ready to play at 08:15!

The event could then run as either 5 games, or your best score out of 5 if some people want the marathon 6 games that only Britcon in the current schedule can offer.

Personally, I quite like the 6 x 4k format of Britcon. Tis the only time I get to play games that size (no other 4k event this year) and I mainly play epic at tournaments these days - hence my keen signing up I suppose.

Saying that, if it increases the likelihood of people coming I don't mind switching to 'best 5 of 6' format - as long as someone's there with me on Friday for a game :).

I'll be there on the Friday night. Although is was useful having the odd number of players last year.

I too really like the 6 game, go big or go home aspect of Britcon.

But we have to face facts that numbers are dwindling. If we only draw 8 or so again this year I think we will have to think long and hard about it next year.

I would really really love to come, but the combination of needing 2 nights accomodation + beer tokens AND the wife working weekends, AND being away from my son all weekend really kills it for me.... hopefully the event will still be running in 5 years time when my son no longer wants anything to do with me and hopefully the missus will have a better job with hours more conducive to my wargaming habit....

I've already sorted out a ticket, and i've gotta say it's may favourite tournament of the year for it's 6x4k format. Granted not to everyone's taste mind you... I do wonder what might be the biggest issue for Britcon and numbers though, whether it's the length of time played, the time of year, the cost, or a combination of the above.

On dropping the friday night, i'd have said that it wouldn't make much difference for most given the early start on the saturday and the distance most people would be travelling - i'd be leaving at an even crazier early time in the morning than usual to get to manchester in time for the 8am (ish) first game!

It took several years before I was able to attend my first Britcon and it was a case of money and family holiday time which stopped me.

However, now that I've made it, I'd want to try an keep the 6 game format (or as some previous years practise game and 6 game format that arriving early on the Friday gives you the opportunity to do).

Cost wise, using the uni accommodation & eating out at the Chinese cut the cost down to similar to the GT, the ticket just costs a bit more.

This year I'll have the wife in tow again and spend a bit more money on the accommodation again, but this our weekend away from the boy so it's justified ;)

I too like the 6 game format, IMO the main reason its down on numbers is a lack of locals - we used to get 2-3 at least from Flame on before their group disintegrated

I agree with everything said so far.

The issue is with 8 players it gets really difficult to do the draw in rounds 5 and 6. Top players end up with those at the bottom which isn't the ideal situation. 12+ I think is the point where 6 rounds become less problematic.

And the BHGS have confirmed that you'll be getting a £5 voucher to spend with traders again this year, ok I know you have to spend £10 to get you £5 but that is a 33% discount!
