This is me chewing the cud again for new Epic Event and I'd like to know what people think! In short it's a 5000pt 3 game tournament, spread across several months, and culminating at what would usually be Bristol Winter Warmer. Whilst the BWW has remained popular these past 3 years (especially the 1 day tournament, not so much the 2nd day gaming event but it's still been VERY fun!) I'm still seeking to do something a little different and I've currently got a real penchant for bigger games! Basically players sign up as they would any normal tournament and we'll price tickets at our usual £5 for the BWW plus another fiver if people would like us to arrange food for everyone. It'll be pay on the day as usual too. The actual DAY of the tournament will see all the players coming together for round 3 of the league to battle it out for the winning spots, most sporting and best painted prizes. Before this 2 previous swiss rounds will have been played by players AWAY FROM THE EVENT: the first round will see players matched up with their most local opponents (so you should end up playing a mate and not having to travel for round 1). The SECOND round will now be swiss matched from round 1: in this case matched pairs of players will have to travel to get their games in: either at local hobby stores, gaming centres or round someone's house if agreed before hand. Groups of players may like to organise a seperate day to host? Et voila! We're all set for round 3 for BWW! Same deal as ever: any race goes, relaxed athmosphere, cheap event, community provided prizes, beer on tap! Because we would be experimenting with the largest force size that most lists are developed for players would also be allowed to change their army composition (but not race/army list chosen from: i.e you couldn't go from being feral orks to ghazkull orks but 2 different ghazkull lists is fine) in each round: it's a chance to chop and change things; hopefully perfecting your 5k list by round 3. It's also a chance to see if we can REALLY PUSH the limits of some builds and get feedback on how they play or even their acceptability (I COULD; take a 31 activation seige list...doesn't mean I should though!) We could also set up a blog or forum area for battle reports and discussion. This would make the BWW a 1 day event this year and would provide a massive oppurtunity to bring all our toys out, spend more time with our opponents than the usual 2.5 hrs per game and be a great drive for testing developmental lists. After the final round of tourney game was finished in the first half of the day we could all sit back and enjoy some titan on titan action in a big multi player Armageddon:Titanicus game to the death! We played something like this back in 2009 where each player is only allowed Xkpts of War engines and the winner is whoever is last man standing or has the most DC near several objectives: it was great fun! If we can bring on 30 players it could get real bloody real quick: those knocked out earlier could be relegated to a gladiators hall of fame game whereby they get matched up for to the death games: two tourneys in one! So: what do people think?! I'm WELL up for it! Yrs, R |

Sounds good. Although I am a bit worried that nearest player to me is Tim, so I may as well start planning for Round Two! ![]() James |

I like the idea in principle... ...in practice however I don't think I would sign up without knowing where I'm going to have to play my second game. The south west is a long way for me; with lots of notice and persuasive argument I could possibly justify the trip once, but to do it on 2 separate occasions for one tournament is not a possibility I can entertain. Others may of course be more flexible. Thinking aloud here, but could round 2 maybe be a semi-swiss regional affair? e.g. east, midlands, north, south west, south east. If you do run it over separate days, it might be wise to have a robust plan for handling what happens if round 2 games don't get played (and also if people decide not the bother going to the final game). |

I agree with Kyrt, it sounds great on paper, but never underestimate the power of Real Life (TM) to get in the way and screw things up..... it might be a better idea to keep some sort of running league going where people can play 5k games and report the results, then those are collated and processed and the grand finale is held at BWW, although I'd be a little wary of travelling 4+ hours down to Bristol for a single (albeit large) game of epic........ especially if your game isn't much fun, at least with a 3-game tournament you stand a good chance of having at least one great game |

Kyussinchains: That's exactly what I'm suggesting! The League could easily kick off after the Summer Sizzler: giving an entire 6 months to get games in! Also, I don't think I've ever had a game within the UK tourney circuit that I haven't enjoyed :-) I'm hoping there's a fair few players (especially EuK regulars) who have the ability to field a 5k list :-) One thing to bear in mind is that this is taking place over several months: not days; so plenty of time for people to arrange games. The amount of travelling people are willing to do is only really dependent on how excited one is by the idea I guess! I'm sure we could afford some amount of wiggle room within the siwss system to bring opponents closer together. |

I'd be up for something like this - i'd love to get a few big games in at the very least! |

The amount of travelling people are willing to do is only really dependent on how excited one is by the idea I guess! And the latter is the rub for me I'm afraid. It's not necessarily the time - although that is definitely in very short supply, given a long enough window it should be possible to get a game in. Rather, it's the distance. If I may be frank, I am simply not prepared to travel 200 miles (or more) for a single game of Epic, and the tournament has the possibility that I might need to do that twice. As you say, I guess that is purely a function of how far I am prepared to go in order to satisfy the craving (pun intended) ![]() Man of kent wrote: I'm sure we could afford some amount of wiggle room within the siwss system to bring opponents closer together. Would be best I think. If it was 1x local, 1x regional and 1x national (preferably somewhere easy to get to in a day like London) I could consider it. |

One thought id had was trying to organise the second game for an evening during a tournament if your opponent's about, in a similar way to Britcon's Friday night game - although granted it might not be everyone's cup of tea, especially if it meant them leaving early and having spend an extra night etc... |

I'd be open for any arrangement players are happy to make in order to match up second rounds. I would be interested in how people think local->regional->national would work out: would there not be a lot of cross over between local and regional?! Epic players tend to be densely clustered! |

Epic players appear to be densely clustered, but that could easily be a case of critical mass - I know no-one outside London in the South East who plays, but that's likely because I don't attend many national events... and that's because I can't find anyone local to play ![]() I like the idea of individual local area games over a few months counting towards an overall result, as I'd find it easy to justify a day out at the weekend; and it'd help to invigorate playtesting of lists, scenarios and so forth, in an easily-explained form. That said, I'd prefer a proper weekend event at the end. Travelling to Bristol would take me four hours or so; I'd prefer to make a weekend of it than travel back afterwards. Broadly though, I like the idea! ![]() |
