Hi everybody

I have recently started running some local WFB and FOW tournaments. The feedback has been great so far apart from one problem that has cropped up. Several participants have complained about dice being unfair, to be more exact a certain club dice has attracted a lot of suspicion.

Have the Epic tournament organisers had any simialar complaints?

thanks
Greg

Could you elaborate a little more Greg? Do you mean that some people feel the random element provided by dice is unfair and leaves too many things to chance or that certain individuals/their dice/a particular die are crooked/weighted?

Sounds like they think this Club's dice is dodgy.

Not sure how the organiser can check this out without outright insulting the Club.

If I truly thought their dice were crooked, my first test as an opponent would be use their dice- either say you've misplaced yours, or just casually use their dice scattered on the table when rolling.

99% of the time it's sour grapes at a Club having better players though.

I have heard of one club having their dice banned from tournaments after they were found to be badly manufactured (and prone to rolling 6's). This was WFB tournies though.

Very simple solution here is to ask both players to use the same dice. I usually have more than enough to spread between meyself and an opponent, and this means that (as far as the dice are concerned) everyone gets the same bias.

However, it does not change a person's 'luck', and while I am happy for anyone to use my dice, few will allow me to touch their dice for fear that I will contaminate them and make them 'unlucky' dice. I really cannot say why that should be

Thanks for the replies guys

What has happened is that we have had complaints over a certain club dice rolling 5s&6s at a very high percentage.

This could be sour grapes but I did witness some very lucky rolls when observing a game involving such dice. What clubs dice is it that have been banned Evil&Chaos?

thanks

The 1st Company Veterans tried to ban all club dice from an Open War Tournament recently, due mainly to complaints against 1 particular club's dice.

After uproar from other club members the ban wasn't enforced, the Vet's never stated which set of dice were causing the concerns .

Everyone should be forced to use Casino dice, or better yet, a computer program that rolls the dice. :)  :))

A national-lottery-style-automated-bouncing-ball-machine-thing would be the most random...

Ginger's idea is the best idea, but I would be hard pressed to have somebody else touching my dice.  Bad ju-ju. :blues:

I have a friend who I used to play 40K regularly against, and we always joked that he always seemed to have the devil's luck, particularly for important roll. Then I had to do a stats project so we tested it, and yeah, he really did roll better! The really weird thing was that he rolled better for the more important rolls. I posted the statistical analysis somewhere on here...

So the dice might actually be dodgy, particularly custom-made club ones. If you want to test it, then you can always try and keep a log of the dice rolls. If you can gather enough data for a number of gamers from the same club then we can perform a statistical analysis and see. Once you have the numbers in front of you, you can get a much better idea of what's going on.

That said:

- people tend to get offended if you accuse them of cheating (even unintentionally).
- people are usually supersitious about their dice and often don't like other people touching them even if they don't roll well!
- it's a game of 6mm toy soldiers, this isn't vegas...

There are still, often, prizes on the line... and that's when things can get... heated.

A "common dice pool" for a Tournament would be a good thing.

Or include a box of dice with the tournament entry fee, so everyone can still feel that they're using "their" dice, but still have a level playing field...

Having been to Games Day and seen how many people walked out of the bathroom withOUT washing their hands, I'd say "NO WAY AM I TOUCHING THOSE DICE!"

Excuse me now while I go disinfect the keyboard for the fourth time today. :;):
