Saturday, May 9th, 2009 Games Day: Baltimore is hosting a Swiss-style Epic: Armageddon Tournament, with two rounds of play.

Epic: Armageddon is the 6mm of version of Warhammer 40,000 where companies of Leman Russ tanks advance on hordes of Orks.  Forces of Craftworlds battle with Chapters of Space Marines as Titans clash and aircraft are torn from the sky.

Tournament Game Times:
Check in time: 0900-0930 hours
Round I – 0930 to 1200 hours
Lunch Break – 1200 to 1245 hours
Round II – 1245 to 1515 hours
Winners and Prizes Determined – 1515 to 1545 hours

There will also be a competition for ‘Best Looking Army’.  Your tournament army will be automatically entered into this competition and all players will vote by secret ballot to determine a winner.

There will also be a team play ‘Big Battle’ from 1000 to 1400 hours (45 minute lunch allowed).  This will feature a 2-vs-2 or 3-vs-3 team play where each person brings a 2,000 point army to fight alongside your companions.

Cost: Free with a Games Day admission ticket ($25).

Prizes: Details are still pending but Trophies for the Tournament and Best Appearance have been confirmed.  Contact me for more information.  More will be posted here.

Who Can Play?
Up to 16 players may participate in the Tournament and up to 6 players for the Big Battle.  Since these events run coterminous you cannot participate in both.  Please sign up as early as possible as slots will be available on a first come-first served basis.

What to Bring?
Up to a 3,000 point army (or 2,000 points for the Big Battle) for the Epic: Armageddon rules set.

Armies are encouraged to be painted but this is not a requirement.  Lists must be submitted by May 2nd (one week prior to the event on May 9th).

All Official Epic Army Lists from the Games Workshop website (download for free from Specialist Games tab, Epic Resources) will be allowed along with the following:

§                     AMTL 3.1.3
§                     Black Legion
§                     Lost & the Damned
§                     Scions of Iron 1.3.2

This is not an all-inclusive list and other lists can be (and may already be) approved on a case-by-case basis prior to registration (Squats, Inquisition, etc), so feel free to contact me with any suggested lists.  Details on the lists (including any changes) will be sent via email.  All approved army lists will be locked by April 7th (one month prior to the event), so contact me as soon as possible with questions or suggestions.

Go to this link at TacticalWargames.net for the latest army development.  Be prepared to meet any opponent!

All questions should be sent to William Sturtevant at moscovian@hotmail.com or PM me here at this forum.

Game Details
The Grand Tournament Scenario will be as described in section 6 of the Epic: Armageddon book.  Rules will be as described in the E:A book, Swordwind book, and the posted FAQ’s and Updates on Specialist-Games (see the 2008 Updates).  Games will be a maximum of 2.5 hours long, including any set-up and warm-up time.  Players are encouraged to do the 10-minute warm-up prior to the game, however, to maximize game play.  Here are some of the things you may want to discuss:
• The ‘Counts As’ Rule (see 6.2.1)
• Lines of Sight and Lines Of Fire
• Fire Arcs on units
• Pre-measuring
• Templates and if units are ‘in or out’
• Terrain features – what do they count as on the terrain chart, when are units ‘in’ terrain
• How you will show if a formation is broken, in overwatch or has marched this turn.
• Anything else you can think of!
If the game is not concluded at the end of 2.5 hours, the game is stopped at the end of the current activation and Tie Breaker rules will be applied.   Both players turn in their scorecards at the end.

Determining a Tournament Winner
The winner of the tournament will be determined by the highest number of victory conditions met for both games.  If the cumulative victory conditions tie, then tying players use the cumulative victory conditions met for both games, minus the total number of victory conditions met by each person’s opposing players.  If there still remains a tie, then the tying players will compare total army points from the final game.

Note: Games that are won using Tie Breaker rules will count as 1-0 victory conditions met for the purposes above.

Player Judges
There will be three player judges (PJs).  These PJs will be the final authority on clarifying rules if the two players cannot resolve the disagreement themselves.  A PJ cannot make a judgment call in his own game and must refer to another PJ.

Table Defaults
Unless both players agree otherwise during the 10-minute warm-up, the following will be the defaults for the table.
 Terrain will remain where it is unless both players agree to move, remove, or add terrain.  A PJ must be notified so the terrain can be properly accounted for.
• Play will go short-ways across the table.
• Sides and opponents will be randomly chosen (no grudge matches allowed)
• Pre-measuring is allowed.
• ‘They Shall Not Pass’ is not achieved if a single unit of an unbroken enemy formation is on your side of the table.
• Summoning ‘Avatars’ takes place during the ‘teleportation phase’, prior to strategy rolls.
• Units are struck by template weapons if any part of the model is under the template.
• The 2008 Epic: Armageddon rules updates plus Core Rules will be the governing rules.

Miscellaneous Details• If you have terrain, feel free to bring it.  Just remember to mark it in some way as yours.  A piece of tape with your name on the bottom, a purple dot, whatever you think will distinguish it.  This is to avoid any confusion at the end of the night during clean-up. Make sure you notify a PJ before placing or moving any terrain.
• Remember to bring objective markers, dice, order counters, blast markers, and blast templates.  Oh, and don’t forget your army either  . ïÂ

Big Battle
The Epic Big Battle will allow teams of players to go head-to-head in a single match.  Up to six players will be allowed to participate (three per team) by bringing a 2000 point army to field alongside the armies of your teammates.  This will run from 1000 hours to 1400 hours with a 45 minute break for lunch to be determined by the participating players.

Details
A modified Grand Tournament Scenario will be used as described in section 6 of the Epic: Armageddon book with the following exceptions:
 The placement of objective markers can be determined any way the team sees fit (within the rules of course)
 Placement of garrisons and formations should alternate between players on a team (one player cannot hold out placing his units until the very end)
 Placement for a all armies on a team is limited only by the tournament rules (i.e. army formations need not be placed in ‘blocks’ according to who controls them).
 Each team counts as a single army for the purposes of play (formation activations, retention, etc.)
 Only one Supreme Commander can be had for each team (this should be chosen before the tournament begins, after teams are created)
 Each player must make the final decision for how to use his army formations
 Each army must be a tournament legal army (meeting all army building requirements for core formations, aircraft allotment, etc.)
Rules will be as described in the E:A book, Swordwind book, and the posted FAQ’s and Updates on Specialist-Games (see the 2008 Updates).  Games will be a maximum of 2.5 hours long, including any set-up and warm-up time.  Players are encouraged to do the 10-minute warm-up prior to the game.

Teams & Grudge Matches
Players can request to be on the same team (or on opposing teams if you have some sort of grudge match going on) but all requests must be finalized by me.  Depending on registration, your request might simply be impossible to accommodate.  With that said, I will consider these on a first-come, first-served basis.

Prizes
Information on prizes for the Big Battle are yet to be determined, but I am doing my best to get details as soon as possible!

A little more information - Direct Sales will be providing Epic models for the prizes, although they are not sure which ones quite yet.  I don't think it will be just a handful either.

Prizes and trophies will be given out for Best Appearance and the Tournament Winner.  Big Battle winners might get some prizes, depending on what we end up with from GW.

BUMP

As we're under a month from the tournament, it would be great to get people to finally start registering.  I have had a lot of 'definitely's and 'probably's, enough to fill 12 slots for the tournament and 4 for the big battle.  But so far I have only received 9 total registrations.

Help me out and register ASAP.

As an update, we have the following:

10 registered for the Tournament
4 registered for the Big Battle

Both events still have room, but not a lot.  It is looking to be an excellent Games Day for Epic players, so register while you still have time!

How many did you have last year?

Yes, we will.  Those mods will be important for mitigating some of the overpowered aspects of the variant lists (like Saim Hann Eldar) and giving a necessary boost to the SMs.

Last year we had 10.  I'm guessing we'll have another two people register for the tournament itself which means we should have 16 total.  That's not a bad boost in participation and quite honestly we would have had closer to 18 or even 20 had they kept the event in June like last year.  I have had two students bail on the tourney because it conflicts with finals.

These numbers may not seem like a big deal to the UK scene, but for the US getting this many people to travel this kind of distance is pretty significant.  I'm pleased by the turn out.

Cool, my Dread gets a 3+ save then.

The grow from last year is definitely pleasing, great job Mosc.  I know we're looking at at least 12 people for NEAT, that's 2 times what we had last year.

I know we're looking at at least 12 people for NEAT

What's the timeframe for NEAT again?  I've got to co-ordinate things with my wife's conference schedule.
