Well; as many know I traveled to Nottingham for Open War XI this weekend and had a whale of a time. I took my LatD which others have seen in my painting thread but i've yet to get a decent picture of but which consisted of the following:

-Cultist Coven (Demon Prince: Wings)
-7 Land Transporters
-1 Hydra
-+1 Cultist Stand
-Demonic Pact       410pts
-Cultist Coven (Chaos Space Marine Champion)
-6 Land Transporters
-1 Hydra
-Demonic Pact                 335pts
-Cultist Coven (Demon Prince; On Foot) SUPREME COMMANDER
-5 Big mutants (exchanged for mutants)
-Hydra        400pts
-Cultist Coven (Demon Prince: Wings)    250pts
-Cultist Coven (Demagogue)
-2 Big Mutants (Exchanged for Mutants)
-Icon Bearer
-Demonic Pact        305pts
-Lord of Battles 400pts
-Lord of Battles 400pts
-Rough Riders        150pts
-Rough Riders        150pts
-DEMON POOL
-5 Lesser
-1 Greater        200pts

The army managed to win Best Painted (and - along with several others - has been offered to be displayed in the citadel miniatures hall :-)!) and I came joint 9th with three losing draws to that came to victory points; that's the best epic i've played in ages!

Following a couple of practice games a weekend ago i formulated a game plan for the army and stuck with it!
In all three games my Blitz objective went on a flank and the other two objectives smack bang in front of that, right on the halfway line and 30cm's apart.  The plan was to send the three Coven's on foot barreling up the flank to take those the two in my opponents half.  Two of them starting on overwatch. Luckily i didn't have to face any marine drop armies so that didn't really apply!  The roughriders screened things from assualt where possible and the Bloodthirster soon stopped anyone coming too close (claiming three warhound/ferals throughout i actually make him my man of the match!) Meanwhilst everything else kept the enemy at bay by being generally threatening!
So; with that plan made i set off to attempt to secure victory!

Game One
Was against Chris 'Skullric' and his orks: a gargant, two big blitz brigades with mekboys, several warbands, one in a landa, some stormboyz, a big kult of speed and a few others.  Had to play carefully but luckily Chris didn't set any of his big stuff up on the objective flank instead falling for the trap of trying to combat the lords of battle with zzaps etc. Plenty of terrain meant i could hide from a lot of his long ranged firepower but both Lords of battle succombed and an unimportant formation (the space marine and his coven) got smashed by the landa and co but this left that formation way out on a flank.
A close game in terms of objectives (and THINK i could have had a 2-1 victory in turn 4) but Chris pummeled me on victory points when we ran out of time and i take my hat off to a hard fought game :-)

Game Two
Was against Gavin; aka Ginger on these forums.  I knew Gav's army was going to prove a headache; eldar with DoomSpinners and other nasty things in the mix.  First turn saw me taking a real pumelling from artillery and was pretty cagey with the need to hop from cover to cover meaning that grabbing objectives with the infantry proved dificult.  In the meantime Gavin decided that something had to be done to the lords of battle and raced a lot of his army forward ready for a large assault in turn two.  Unfortunately for him (and VERY luckily for me) I won the initiative roll in turn two (which i also had in turn one...) and a large assauslt by both of my Lords of Battle proceeded to munch through three of his intermingled formations; wierdly enough though i seem to recall rolling a double one for my conbat resolution whilst Gav managed a six! However, with such cagey action in turn one and a pint being grabbed halfway through we ran out of time again and Matt O ruled it to be a straight draw.  Again; with time i reckon this game would have been mine as Gavin's army was slowly being beaten away.  I'd like to spend some time playing Gaving again at some point.

Game Three
Was my favourite game of the day.  It took me and Wayne (who has a really nicely painted Blacklegion army) four turns of solid scrapping and me being scared of his formations on overwatch to reach a winning draw to him whereby he won by 210 pts.  If the bloodthirster had managed to roll his 3rd Titan Killer hit against one of the feral's then this could have been my one and only win of the day.  Wayne also had three deathwheels in the army as his BTS which I simply couldn't touch! Alas; however, this was the last game of the day and i can't quite remember it i'm afraid but would like to thank Wayne again for the one and only game that i actually managed to see the end of beyond turn three!

Thanks to all for putting on a great event and see people next time.
YRs,

No worries Rugman; did Russ or someone get in touch then? I actually ended up getting the 2020 from Nottingham to brum and didn't get into Worcester (i live in bristol!) until 2357 but that did mean i slept on a mates boat for the night and had a couple of nice pints the next morning...was shattered when i finally got back though; you should have seen us attempting not to fall into the canal working around the works near the bridge!
(Ps; i really have run out of painting projects for now! gonna paint my Black Legion as a quckie but they'll not win any prizes; whisper into kev's ear when he's bringing his next special project and together i'm sure we can 'orgnaise' to win you a painting prize again ;-)!...all tongue in cheek of course!
