Just starting out with Epic and looking for some suggestions.  I currently play FOW, DBA, Warmachine, and played 40K in the Rogue Trader days and early 2nd edition.  So I do have some gaming experience.

I was looking for a new game to play and have always liked Epic so a buddy and I decided to each build a 1500 point force and play at Cold Wars (www.coldwars.org) this year since that is the only time we see each other.  I have also committed to producing or purchasing the terrain for our game.  Now questions for the experts:

I have a 4?x6? ground cloth.  I take it that is large enough for a 1500 point game.  How many points fit well on this size mat?

How much terrain do you recommend for this size game or this size mat and is the type important?

Anyone have recommendations for a job type of starting scenario?  My goal is to make it interesting enough to keep the other playing and hopefully draw in other players.  Are there any particular types to stay away from when playing Epic?  Time is short so I don?t have time to play test a bunch of scenarios to see if they fit.  First one has to be good.

Any other thoughts or suggestions on how to get this thing started would be welcome.

Welcome aboard, Termi.

A 4' x 6' playing area can easily accommodate a 3000 point game. 4' x 4' would be more appropriate for a 1500 game. With that size game, a good starting scenario is to have three objectives, one on your side of the table, the other on your opponent's and the third in the middle, with the goal being to control two at game's end.

As for terrain, I forget off the top of my hand what the rulebook suggests for terrain density, but for a 4' x 4' table, 6-8 pieces should be sufficient. Buildings, rubble and woods are used often for terrain. For your initial games, I would shy away from using War Engines and aircraft.

What armies are you and your opponent collecting? The main reason I ask is that certain armies are easy to learn with than others.

Good luck in your first few games.

The GT scenario in the Epic:Armageddon rulebook is fine and provides for some fun gaming.

1500 points might not be the best point value though as the game is aimed for and balanced at 2700 to 3000 points

Good points Dwarf Supreme ... And I also agree with Pixelgeek ... 3000 pts is a better number ...

I enjoy 2000 point games myself as well as the standard 3000. They're a factor of 2 quicker, and pose some interesting tactical challenges.

Yes I agree with what Dwarf Supreme says above. That's the sort of setup I'm trying for an intro game tomorrow.

As for terrain, the GT scenario recommends using 2 pieces of terrain per 2' sq section (so a 6'x4' table should have around 12 pieces). Each terrain piece should be between 6" - 1' in each direction, and hills may be up to double these distances. No more than 4 pieces of terrain should be placed in any 2' sq area.
This should result in somewhere between 25% - 40% coverage.

Terrain shapes the battle by introducing dead ground, hidden troop movement, etc and brings out the different weapon and unit capabilities.

Thanks for the help!

I will have to try to put together a 2000 point game but time is working against me.  We started out at 1000 points but each decided we could possilby do 1500 in the time alotted.

What is the effect of having a lot of terrain?  Does it slow down the game or provide too much of an advantage to close combat troops?  I typically like to have more terrain and recommended but not if it negatively effects the game.

I hope to have 3000 points by Historicon, which is in July.  There are usually several flea market stands at Cold Wars that are selling misc Epic stuff and I hope to capitalize on them.

Anyone going to Cold Wars?

In E:A, terrain is deemed to be either "No effect", "dangerous" or "impassable" to any given unit type. "Dangerous" terrain does not slow units going through it, but may cause damage to the units unless they go very slowly.

The extra terrain usually make the battle more colourful, and requires a little more strategic and tactical thought, so may slow the game in that respect.

Also, a rule of thumb is about 3-4 formations per 1000 points, so 2,000 point is 6-8 formations.

I would recomend starting with training scenarios in Epic A rulebook. Then we started with 1000 points, then upped it to 1,200, 3rd game 1,500, then 1,800 and 5th game 2,000. Then upped to 2,500 before sticking with 3,000 points format.

What we found is that it worked well adding 1 new unit each game. Got to understand basic rules and also each individual unit. It may sound like slow progression but we could get in 2-3 smaller games in gaming session.

Enjoy!!!

Cheers

James
