Another "interesting" list !!
For what it's worth, I quite like putting the Dreads in with a set of Termies as a BTS, carried in a Landing Craft. At 4k it is quite possible, and it puts out an awfull lot of MW dice in an assault - enough to take down a Reaver on a good day :D .

Definitely a case of "circle wagons" when that lot is in the air . . . :D

Muck F.... That is a list and a half.

Just as well your list is almost entirely skimmers and flyers then :) Might be best to leave the Avatar in the box though :) They don't like CC MWs.

I tend to have poor luck with Phoenix Bombers, they rarely hit and seem to have no armour. However I agree that they are a very good choice in the list at the moment.

I took them at expo. I look at them and think they should easily be worth their points, which is why I took them. But they still have exactly the same problems they always had:
1. If they fail to activate (which happened more often than not in my games), that is 300 points doing absolutely zero. In my 3 games, I think I successfully activated them 3 times.
2. They are not all that reliable at damaging things. Only one of those activations scored an appreciable number of hits. Another simply resulted in no hits because there weren't all that many units under a single template and they generally hit on 5's because flyers can't sustain. In the other activation, one got shot down by a single hydra and the remaining two (hitting on 6's) rolled 14 dice for their barrage and didn't hit anything. The AT shots were useful though.

So overall, still IMO not as good as a void spinner which is simply much more reliable for its allotted task. They'd be a nice formation to use in addition, but then they're too expensive for that (both in terms of absolute cost and the fact they are taken from the WE allocation). So probably fine for cost, just not likely to have enough points spare to include them often.

Home from another Epic Britcon.

Thanks to all the players for making it easy to umpire as always, and to all my opponents for fun and challenging games.

More details to follow when I recover :D

Well the dust has settled once more after the marathon weekend of gaming that is Britcon. I’m sure many don’t see it that way, but you try playing 3 4,000 point games in one day, starting at 08:15 ;)

Eight players signed up this year and the decision was made to run the event as round robin. Players were then seeded and the round were number one played number eight was dropped. This ensured no players had to play each other twice as would have been likely in a normal swiss event.

With a good mix of races the competition was fierce… well ok… maybe one player did run away with the competition, and in doing so took the overall Britcon winner award for dropping the fewest points across all his games. Four players were in the running for the other podium places going into the last round.

Gavin managed to take his double revenant biel tan list into third, and I can tell you it’s a pretty fearsome list to play against, losing only one game all weekend.

Joe maneuvered his codex marine list into second, with no spaceship in sight!

But it was Richard and his Krieg army that stormed into first, winning all six games and only dropping a tiny 15 points our of the 192 on offer! Truly grinding all before him under his relentless gorgons.

The win leaves Richard standing tall in the championship standings too, with two events left to come.

Thanks to all the players at the weekend for making Britcon the amazing event it is every year. Thanks to the BHGS for hosting us.

Bring on Britcon 2015!

Thanks Dave and all my opponents (plus Ginger who was my miss). Once the horror of Sunday calms down I try and get a report up.

Well done Richard, think that everyone should turn up with Krieg for the GT so that you can have a taste of your own medicine ;)

The combination of Warhounds, Shadowswords and Gorgons create the problem as you have to deal with two out of the three.

A quick report from my game with Richard. I was playing Saim-Hann and felt that I had a good chance of taking on the Krieg with three Scorpions, three Vampire Hunters, Space Craft and a Cobra backed up with Shining Spears. My game went to pot when I could only break one Shadowsword in the first turn and manage to have a Hunter shot down. (Spacecraft failed to come on....)

I set up three activations for the start of the following turn all to hit the three Warhounds - Falcons, Shining Spears and the Cobra. Both Cobra and Falcons had not scratched the Warhounds in previous turn.

Unfortunately I lost the Strategy Roll and instead of killing three Warhounds I lost the Falcons and Cobra to the Warhounds. This was compounded by my other two Hunters being shot down by the end of the turn to remove most of my anti-Warhound/Shadowsword/Gorgon fire power.

Being down on the activations forced me to push for a draw, but this just left me vulnerable to counter attacking which saw most of the rest of my army packed away in double quick time.

I tend to agree with Tim that the issue is rather the combination of a number of different elements, including poor dice at the wrong time.

However, DKoK are very resilient especially when used in skilled hands which makes them difficult to stop. As such Gorgons do add significantly to the strength of the already resilient infantry, and are probably a bit OTT in that regard.

That Richard was able to stomp through everyone to such an emphatic victory only adds to this conviction and concerns over the strength of the DKoK list.

I'm not going to say they're OP, that'd be premature, just because a good player wins with them.

I do think they are a very solid tournament army, simply due to the reliability and broad utility of their formations. Maybe less susceptible to luck due to the averaging effect of lots of dice being thrown. The crux for me is that those infantry companies have to be dealt with, yet they are practically unassaultable, even by specialists. This is due to their huge numbers, 6 DC of RA to absorb hits, and very consistent performance in both CC and FF (again due to the sheer number of not-terrible dice). The gorgons aren't even that slow, AND they have Walker. The units complement each other perfectly. So they need to be whittled down and that can only be done if you have the tools to kill gorgons with shooting, and shooting isn't very reliable. You need an average 12 hits to kill just one, and there's a good chance they won't even be broken afterwards. It takes a lot of doing when there are 3 formations on the table, plus other things which also need to be dealt with (warhounds, chiefly). You need to spend far more than 450 points to deal with each one. Are they worth more than 450? Possibly. All I can say is, when I faced up to Florian's army at Expo, I was really not sure how I was going to win against it. It felt like playing titans, except without the weaknesses (numbers, speed, susceptibility to BMs). I was impressed with them enough to want to build an army of them, anyway...

The Gorgon units actually have a couple of core weaknesses if you know how to exploit them properly. One can be achieved through army build (and most armies have the necessary options at their disposal, even if they don't take it) and they also have a specific assault vulnerability if you know what to look for. I'll leave it to you to figure them out yourself though ;)

They are certainly a very solid army, and i'm pretty sure they're going to be under the nerf hammer at some point in the not too distant future. And yes, that's probably my fault :(
