G4 McMullet’s Orks – an aesthetic respite from the armies of the imperium
I’d never faced or used Orks as a race before and McMullet introduced me to them with his superbly modelled, converted, and painted force. Luck was heavily in my favour on turn one again and this time I managed to hold the advantage it gave to a 2:0 win on turn 3. Spacecraft: finally got my barrage over a good target, hitting most of a blitz brigade, but still only getting one kill. The pinpoint destroyed a zapp gunfortress in the other big blitz brigade, followed by podding chosen who destroyed a second gunfortress in assault, breaking the BTS and leaving it on 4 units. The Orks planned to retaliate with a landa air assault on one of my retinues, hoping to take advantage of the feral I’d left intermingled. Things did not go in Orks’ favour, as they inflicted 0 kills in exchange for more losses than their grots could soak up, losing the assault and the landa. The chosen on the Ork back line proved resilient and it took several Ork activations to clear the demon summoning threat.

Terminators teleported in on turn 2, picking up 3 BM from the warp as they appeared on the spot where the chosen had just been wiped out. Undeterred by the blastmarkers they slammed into their target mob, blocking the Orks inside their battlefortress, wiping out the formation. The Orks retaliated by Zapping away my decimator and I followed ineffectually with a double 1 activation re-roll and double 1 assault resolution. By the end of turn three the remnants of the Ork BTS were gone and my surviving rhino retinue was holding the blitz.

G5 DptDexy’s Marines – duel of the spaceships
Starting with a direct hit on my BTS with the orbital barrage the Marines were 1 point up by the third activation and kept up the momentum to win 3:0 on turn three. I attempted to fight back by surrounding the air assaulting terminators with scout ZoC to prevent recycling, but they broke in the end. The chaos terminators appeared for turn 2, but lost the initiative and broke as their target warhound moved back and shot, before it was blasted apart by my cruiser’s pinpoint. By the end of turn 2 I’d lost most of my half of the board, but had chosen on the marine blitz and one full retinue on the other side of the marine half. Turn 3 was mostly a clean-up operation for the Marines, the chosen broke to kills from thunderbolts and the retinue contesting the other objectives in the marine half were broken in the final activation of the game after two turns of assault.

I had a great weekend fighting five very sporting opponents and learnt a lot from my first tournament experience!

The dust has settled on the first 2 day event of the Epic year, the BHGS Challenge. 10 players traveled to Oxford in what was a new venture for Epic-UK. While we have been at Britcon for 6 years this was the first time we had attended one of their other 2 big events. Thanks to the BHGS and Tim or the Challenge Committee for welcoming us to their event, we certainly intended to be back next year.

Richard ground all before him under the wheels of his relentless gorgons! Dave T took second place and Tim rounded out the top 3 after his steel legion tooled up to face titans final faced the AMTL. Full results can be seen here - http://epic-uk.co.uk/ukepicachampionship/t5c.php?tid=71

There were no soft scores at the event but special mention has to go out to Matt L for his wonderful Khorne chaos marines, and Sam for his lovely orks, both armies I hope make it to an event where there are soft scores and trophies.

Next up epic wise is the Wrath of the Tyrant event in Leicester on the 4th of May followed by Games Expo at the NEC, Birmingham on the 31st May.

After that we have the BHGS Roll Call event. The Sunday of this two day event has been set aside as a campaign day, there has been talk of giving The Bridge to Far scenario a run out but if anyone has ideas for a big game they’d like to play get in touch.
