As far as I can tell, GW are trying to downgrade the epic tournaments, they've taken no guidance from the popular and year on year well attended epic events, written a bad system for points, limited the time for games AND upped the price from the frankly shocking £50 of last years tourny. On principle I shouldn't go. But I probably will, just to play more epic.

PS. Last year we had 12 players at the Epic GT, 5 of those came from Bournemouth store (including me) this year none of them will be attending (except me), that smacks of a 8 player tourny!

Last years GW GT wasn't really a typical turnout though - usually about 16 players turn up for Notts/Mansfield tournaments but only 5 of the tournament regulars came last year as the WPS CC was the weekend after (and cheaper)

Over the past six (well five out of the six) years the average has been 13.2 players.

Last year they had two events, one a week after the one I attended, both call to arms epic tournaments as far as I could discover at the time, can anyone confirm this as true?

Like Matt I sent GW an email and have received the following reply.

Hi there

Thanks for getting in touch regarding Call to Arms. I hope I can shed a bit more light on why the pack is the way it is, in addition to explaining how I see things moving forward.

You are probably more than aware of the current state of play regarding the support for Specialist Games from us at the moment. I am in the fortunate position of being able to provide direct, albeit limited support for them through the development of the Call to Arms event project. This is a move by us in Warhammer World to provide direct support for selected systems by holding a combined system event. This will be a permanent fixture on the calendar for as long as there is a demand for it.

This is the first incarnation of the event; as such the aim was to create a simple, consistent event that fit into our calendar. Moving forward, one of my primary objectives is to find and engage the community in its future development as part of our calendar. As a team of one, I lack the resource to attend other people’s events and get first hand knowledge and experience of how others do it; as the system of 30-1-0 is already in place and working for other events, it was a logical place for me to start.

The pack is based on a similar event that we ran 2-3 years ago; the changes I have made are based around tried and tested systems that work for other events, with some small input from players around the offices. I am more than happy to receive feedback/suggestions from any quarter regarding improvements or developments; I see this event’s success lying in the interaction with the community and their input into it’s development. The bugger is that I haven’t a clue where to find that community – yet.

With regards to the lists you mention, I have drawn the list of permitted armies in the pack from the Specialist Games site and the living rulebook. These are counted as current as they are the most accessible lists available. We only support armies or variant lists in our other events that are currently in print; this would draw into question any lists which are only available from an out of print source like Fanatic.

I hope that this helps. At the very least I want to open a dialogue with you for what we could do to make this event a success. Please feel free to contact me to discuss this further – I’d be interested in seeing what other events offer with a view to developing this one.

Cheers

Andy Joyce

Well at least you got a reply!

To the best of my knowledge GW only ran one tournament last year. It was the week before the WPS CC. Between the two 19 people took part in one or both.

Average numbers attending Epic tournaments are rising slowly year on year and I'd expect between 12 and 20 for Call to Arms this year.

I hope to be attending with one or two more local players.

There appears to be a number of people who have attended call to arms or other epic GT's at Warhammer World on this forum, so lets get a list:

I'm Jon, I'm 6'2" and have long hair, used to play Dark Angels but have moved over to a forgeworld heavy Imperial Guard Army based on Gaunts Ghosts. I've been to five Epic GT's now and have loved every one of them, see you in september.

PS. Could EVERYONE who is interested in the epic GT make a big effort this year and go along, the more people we get this year the more input we can all have on the day and the more improvments for next time, also the more players they get the cheaper the overall costs for them, so they might even lower the price again.

It would be nice, but probably no. If I had to choose (and I don't think I can sadly :( ) it would be britcon, which actually I think may work out cheaper than GW. Gavins shown we can do 20 person tournies in London for next to nothing. Turning up as one of a dozen players for £60 a head plus travel and accomodation doesn't really appeal.

Guys it must be Specialist Games day at head office I've just received a second reply.

Hi

I will allow the Speed Freaks to be used for this event – I think the fact they’ve not been included seems to be a typo on our end.

I will publish an amendment in the House Rules to cover this.

Cheers

Andy Joyce

I've also sent Andy a link to this wonderful forum so watch your posting

Am playing with the idea of LatD as I can bring even more models, however I have a lot of painting and basing to go first. I am fast getting to the opinion that LatD are worse than any other approved army, but which way to go, hoard or War Engines.

I had to ask the SF question as I am the Army Champion.

What do you mean by worse?

More broken, or less powerful?

Just to let you know,

I've also had positive communication from Games Workshop. I've sent a reply and hopefully we shall be talking about improvements to this and future events
