Yes, Dave T is a complete gent. He just happens to be incredibly good! (OK enough crawling)

I've played around 30 tournament games so far. I have been trounced many times, come bottom in three tournaments, but have never experienced WAAC. Indeed I find most folk almost try to outdo each other in sportsmanship terms.

On the subject of the lists taken, most seem to be pretty fluffy. But that's the epic system for you, the combined arms philosophy means you need a bit of everything.

The popcorn siege army is perhaps OTT, though you hardly ever see that. The war-engine heavy BL armies are fairly common, which seem to cause a fair deal of fear: the jury is still well and truly out on whether that one is unsporting though.
The over-use of Warhounds in guard and marine armies perhaps is of some concern: EUK has made a small stab at addressing that. Otherwise everything else seems ok.

A competitive environment is a perfect way to give new lists a good going over. These are lists designed for a competitive scenario after all.

I've been to three Epic tournaments in the UK.

Whilst I have come up against army lists that push the boundaries of fair play and common sense (Commissars riding in Warhound Titans, Black Legion Titan Legions), the level of annoying play is as nothing compared to the doouchery displayed in the two Warhammer Fantasy tournaments I've attended (A 'Conflict' and the 'Grand Tournament').

The players mostly do approach the Epic game with a tournament ethos rather than a fluffy ethos like mine, but that's only to be expected as it's a competative environment, and as I inferred above, there's not so much you can do with listhammer in Epic as compared with GW's core games (I've brought the same 'soft' list to three tournaments and twice placed inside the top 5).

But then that's the point of Epic ; In GW's core games, your army list forms most of your in-game tactics (They are Strategy-heavy so as to appeal to kids, and the Strategy-heavy focus promotes collecting Toy Soldiers for your particular Strategy to work!) so there are few decisions to make in-game. In Epic, although your army list informs your strategy, it doesn't form the whole of it so the game is much more tactically complex...

... Ie: Skill wins out, so unskilled douchebag WAAC players can't automatically listhammer their way to the top like they do in GW's core games.

So to paraphrase Rug, the EpicUK gaming 'club' is a very competative club, but it's not full of douchebags.

Open to newbs? I've yet to play a game but winter 2010 I'll be in cardiff, just a short skip and a jump away.

Come along, it'd be great to have you there! I'm definitely going and I've never been to a tournament before and have only ever really played one person (and years ago at that).

Mephiston - why not maybe come down the night before and stay over if the early start is a problem? MoK did offer crash-space in his initial post.

We could run out of spaces quite quickly at this rate, hope MoK finds a good sized venue for us!

more flak and air support

I think my flak is fine as far as 'fluffy' goes... there should be more Hellhounds than Hydras in a fluff army!

I could drop the Hellhounds and take three more Hydras (And have a better list!) but like I say, Hellhounds should be more common in fluff land. :)

Now to find space for my Griffons! lol

WAAC is when you build your army to distroy your opponent in the quickest time possible with as little enjoyment (for your opponent, and probably you) as possible.

Nope, it means Win At All Costs. Where people play soley to win games, its not exclusive to sportsmanship nor to having fun but it doesn't let such things get in the way. Fact is that all current tournaments are highly competative and I'm able to see that a more friendly event has space in the calender without having to wave my e-peen around to emphasis how wonderful I am.

Secondly, you're waaay off topic. If you really can't cope with someone having an opinon thats different to yours without making a scene about it you may send me a message, if you expect a reply you need to sort out your tone though...

Hopefully, now we can return to talking about positive things instead of putting up with people like Braveheart trying to hijack the thread to start a fight.

How many people are thinking about going it is about a dozen? I know there are maybe 4 or 5 players at the wargame club who would think about going (including myself and MoK).

EDIT: By CS

I totally agree with Steve's comments.

Hymirl,

Plus you said I brought this discussion way off topic ... It was you who posted the WAAC topic in the first place ... I'm sorry if I've caused offense however the fact that no-one has supported your point speaks volumes.

Hymirl is perfectly within his rights to give his reasons for not liking the existing tournaments, and he's perfectly within his rights to express his happiness at the idea of a self-professed more friendly tournament. This shouldn't be considered an attack on anyone; people do like different sides of the game.

I happen to agree with the gist of his comments, if not the bluntness with which he put them. The "tournament mentality" doesn't generally gel well with me, and I enjoy friendly, less competitive games more. There's nothing wrong with this, and it's not an attack on those who prefer a more hardcore aproach.

I welcome the chance to try a type of tournament that will hopefully more gel with the type of play I enjoy.
