By way of introduction, I just want to say that the Kroot Mercenary list in 40K has always intrigued me because it was so off the beaten path. Now that the list has become obsolete, I'm glad I never sprung for the 200+ Kroot I thought it would take to field.

Now Epic...that's a different story. While work was progressing on the Tau list and I was in and out of IA3, The Taros Campaign, I got to thinking about the Kroot Mercenary list and what it might look like in Epic.

So, I thought I would give it a shot and at least get the ball rolling to see if anyone else was up for a giggle.

I have no pretensions that this list would ever be in a tournament. It is strickly a fluff list intended to fill a minor, but significant niche. It will have lots of weaknesses. I don't really expect the Kroot Merc list (KML) to do well against most opponents. In Taros, the Kroot did best when an opponent didn't know that they were around and could spring ambushes.

So, here is what I have worked up so far and I'd be interested in seeing what others think about the idea.

For reference material (so we can all be on the same page) I am using Andy Hoare's 40K Mercenary Kroot Army List article and that material in IA3.

Kroot Mercenary Army List v1.1-020109


Kroot Mercenary armies have a strategy rating of +2. Kroot Mercenary formations have an initiative rating of +2.


Core Kindred Formations

Council of Pech (only one allowed), 275 points
8 x Master Shapers


Carnivore Kindreds, 225 points
1 x Master Shaper unit
11 x Carnivore units

May additionally have: (each option can only be taken twice)
+4 further Kroot Carnivore Squads,  +75 points
+4 Kroot Hound Packs, +50 pts
+4 Krootox Herds, +75 points

Hunter Kindreds, 150 points
1 x Shaper unit
3 x Knarloc Rider units

May additionally have: (each option can only be taken twice)
+4 further Knarloc Rider units,  +75 points

(Two may be taken per Core Kindred)

I have my doubts about having Space support for the Kroot, but maybe we can make it interesting.

Army List Notes:

i. Fieldcraft rule – Kroot receive +1 Cover Save in non-Urban terrain

ii. Eaters of the Dead - Kroot may not roll for a consolidation move after a successful assault.

iii. Hyperactive Nymune Organ – Kroot Mercenaries receive +1 to their activation roll if choosing an Engage order

iv. Booby traps – Kroot Mercenaries may nominate three pieces of terrain as being booby trapped. Any units moving out of or entering a booby trapped piece of terrain will receive a blast marker.

Yeah, but I didn't understand the "roll" part... as you don't roll for it in EPIC.

I get what you meant, Honda, but I wanted to be clear.

Anyway, any other thoughts or comments? I know there's not a lot there, but what about some of the newer units like the Knarloc and Vultures. Should the Knarlocs be LV or Cavalry? If LV, should they receive Walker?

Also, what's your feelings on points for these things?

Honda,

are you still working on this at all?


After a quick scan, I would encourage you to turn the shaper into a character upgrade.  Or maybe have a character and a unit.  The reasoning being the existence of those units will really hurt the Vulture and Rider formations by slowing them down.

Ditto what Schmitty said:  Shapers should be a character upgrade, like a platoon leader.  The Shaper Council is a unit.

Knarlocs should be cavalry units, like a cross between Rough Riders and Ratling snipers.

Great Knarlocs should be LVs (they're not Monstrous creatures in IA3, so shouldn't be AVs).

Vulture Kroot are fast (30-35cm) Jump infantry.  They're about as good in CC as regular kroot, just get there faster.
