Sooo. I have skimmed through a couple of Wikipedia pages about the RAF and came up with the following:

Modern Organisation:
2-3 Aircrafts frorm a Section commanded by a Flight Lieutenant (Captain).

2 Sections  form a Flight (3-6 Aircrafts) commanded by a Squadron Leader (Major)

3-4 Flights  form a Squadron (9-24 Aircrafts) commanded by a Wing Commander (Lieutenant Colonel)

World War 2 Organisation:

3-6 Aircrafts form a Flight commanded by a Flight Lieutenant (Captain)

3-4 Flights  form a Squadron (9-24 Aircrafts) commanded by a Squadron Leader (Major)

3-4 Squadrons form a Wing (27-96 Aircrafts) commanded by a Wing Commander (Lieutenant Colonel)

Personally i find that the WW2 organisation fits the Imperial Navy better :)

EDIT: Damn! Typo in the title...

gotta find my copy of Double Eagle, but I think the WW2 organization is what Dan Abnett based his flying IG off of.

And before you get upset, Abnett did mention that this particular group came off of a planet that had almost no landmasses, everyone lived in cloud cities.  Therefore, when the planet had to stand-up a guard regiment, the only trained soldiers were pilots.

I have read Double Eagle :) But i'm more interested in the organisation of the Imperial Navy andnot of a flying Regiment of the Imperial Guard ;)

Is there something in Aeronautica Imperialis about this?

Perhabs the German Luftwaffe fits better?

2 Aircrafts form a Rotte (Section, literally a Pack)commanded by a Rottenf?hrer (usually a Hauptmann = Captain)

2-3 Rotten form a Schwarm (Flight, literally: a Swarm) (4-6 Aircrafts) commanded by a Schwarmf?hrer (usually a Major)

3-4 Schw?rme form a Staffel (Squadron) (12-24 Aircrafts) commanded by a Staffelf?hrer (usually an Oberstleutnant = Lieutenant Colonel)

The higher numbers in these formations are rare exeptions.

So, the ideal (meaning, pre-combat) TO&E seems to be 10 aircraft per squadron, 5 squadrons per wing.

well this is from a FW book.  tnhat despite the fact that GW's codex: IG states that IG regiments are about 3K strong, so that they all fit inside a transport, has regiments at 10s of tnhousand strong.  So I would take it as a loose guide.

Though I think that executioner hour and shadow point have the imperial navy space fighter and bomber squadrons at about 10 to twenty strong.

New intel:

Taros campaign

4 fighter wings
2 bomber wings
1 tactical wing

with a total of:
78 fighters
24 Marauders
18 Valykries

the exact compoisition of each wing isn't given.

though I would guess that the bombers were split evenly between the two bomber wings  :O

whilst the fighters were mainly in the fighter wings, with one or two in the tactical wing, and the Valkyries were mainly in the tactical wing, with one or two in each fighter wing.

Pssible along the lines of 18 fighters and two valkyries per fighter wing and 6 fighters and 10 valkyries in the tactical wing.

Of course the easiest solution is that the tactical has all 18 valks.  Whilst the fighters are evenly plit amongst the fighter wings (given 20 fighters per wing, with one wing having only 18)
