Post subject:  Legendary formations

I have been making remarks to this projects on and off for a few months now, so I thought I would share what I have so far.

The idea is to make a couple of dozen formations that are the epic equivalent of special characters. ?They are to represent formations that normally don?t appear on the battlefield but still could happen by (just like abbadon does in 40K). ?They are to have one or two special rules but don?t need too.

So far I have two for the imperium: a living saint and her entourage and an imperial navy away team.
Two for the Orks: A big Mek and a load of heavy weapon boyz and a Loota warband
One for the Eldar: Fuegan and his lads.

I also have the rough drafts for two nid one: a mycetic spore storm and a Genestealer coven.

None of them have any point costs, yet, but I am working on it.

So read and enjoy, and if you have any ideas of other formationsplease let me know, I am running out of idea :(

EDIT: new version is up, with point costs. ?Focusing on the third Armageddon war

Most of the 40K characters, with appropriate retinue, would be candidates.  For example, the apocalypse rules have a setup that's Karandras and 3+ squads of Scorpions.  Most of the Phoenix Lords could have similar kinds of formations - ~6 stands of the appropriate aspect, 2 exarchs, 1 autarch.

Harlequins sound like they would more or less fit those criteria.

There was an Ork warboss and retinue card back in SM2.  It might have been Ghazkul, but any big warboss [insert generic Ork name] would do.  The formation was Warboss, Nobz, and Wagons - 5 stands of Nobz + warboss + transport, iirc.

Some sort of famous/notorious KoS would make sense for Orks.

Fabius Bile and his retinue of mutant guinea pig CSMs.

A Word Bearer Apostle and a set of "permanent" daemons (on board instead of being summoned).

Grey Knights and Legion of the Damned for Imperials.

Some sort of Flying Aces aircraft formation for the Imperials.

A formation of dreads and venerable dreads for an appropriate SM chapter.

Wulfen

Haven't there been several stories about veteran IG irregulars or semi-regulars?  Gaunt's Ghosts and such?  Those are about formations rather than characters anyway.

There were various "character" titans - Bubonis for Nurgle and Skylok for Tzeentch.

Some sort of Nid biotitan or even a veteran swarm similar to the Red Terror and Ol' One Eye.

Inquisitor mounted on Dreadnought-like transport and retinue of stormtroopers.

Ad Mech 'Holy Knight' (no, this isn't a Christmas carol, it's a Machine Lord!) and tech guard.

Tau battle suit commander and retinue with drones.

Savage Ork Warphead Weirdboy in weirdboy tower mounted on Squiggoth with an escort of Madboyz.

Ork Big Mek and Mad Dok with Dreddmob (from the old, old days of Freebooterz!)

Thanks for all the ideas boyz.  I've got a few more kicking around my head.

I was thinking of having Ghazgul and a retuniue of mega nobz and a gun fortress as an upgrade to a regular warband.

And I have a few ideas for a kult of speed formation, that is allowed to leave boyz behind without suffering BM if they lose too many transports.

And Nealhunt what sort of stats do mutant guinea pigs have? :D

Comissar Yarric on Fortress of Arrogance (Banenlade).
Primarchs/Demon Primarchs. Mortarion, Magnus the Red, Angron, Fulgrim, Sanquinius...
Chapter masters, Dante, Logan Grimnar etc...
Commander Farsight (Tau).

Now there is an idea, the daemon Primarch with a few greater daemon bodyguards  Thanks tooninki.

Didn't Angron have 12 bloodthristers as a bodyguard?

A herd of squiggoths, or even orkeosauri could be fun (like the Harad Mumaks from LotR).

I've been doing some thinking, I am going to be dropping the three different types of looted vehicles and just having the looted gun wagon, to make the rules simpler.

I have also come up with rules for a kult of speed legendary formation and Ghazgul himself.  hopefully I will be able to get them and the nid ones up tomorrow, as well as inital point costs.

There were special formations published in the dying days of 3rd Edition that would be worth looking up

I would love to snag a few of these for Firebase!

I was already thinking of doing an article along these lines in fact (I'd already built Comissar Yarric on his Fortress of Arrogance, and an Epic scale Marneus Calgar of the ultramarines).

There were rules for a handful of Spacewolf characters (Njall Stormcaller, Ragnar Blackmane and Whossname the other one) as well as Ghazgkull and Yarrick. These were published in old White Dwarf articles as well as in an Epic compendium of (well, d'oh) White Dwarf Articles. If you cannot lay hands on them I will try to scan them, if you're interested.

they did produce rules at the end of 3rd ed for the catachan devils, basically ambush rules on a normal guard infantry company... and a veteran tank company too i think.

Once they are "balanced" snag away.  I am planning on sending the complete article to fanatic online, once the community has gone over it.

I am also going to GW today to mail order some orks to convert into all of the heav' ladz and I have a mail order from FW to send off (after payday) for the wagonz.

So the complete article should have a conversion guide in it as well, if I remember to take pictures along the way.
