I have decided to make the legendary fdormations project easier on myself and focus on units that "took part" in the third war of Armageddon.

This way I can write the rules and make the models without being distracted by other cool formations.  Once I have completed it for the third war, then I'll choose another theatre and do some more legendary formations (such as the phalanx of the void dragon).

Also to avoid writing the same note in several character sections I have come up with a new special rule called heroic

A formation that contains a heroic unit is fearless, but will auto break if the heroic unit is killed.

So far the formations I have got planned are

Imperial
the living saint
Commissar Yarrick
Imperial Navy away team
Deathwatch kill team
Inquisitor strike force

Ork
Ghazkul (with his own personnal supa fortress)
Loota warband
Mek warband
Trukk warband
Squigzilla (only if the FW orkasurus model is biiger than the SG one)
Sotrm boy air assault formation (actual two formations, one of storm boyz one of blasta bommas)

I've done the update.  It has

Yarrick.
the living saint
Deathwatch kill team
Imperial navy away team
Ghazghkull
Loota warband
Shootie warband
Trukk warband
Giant squigoth

I am still working on the others.

The PDF on the first post has been updated.

This should go I think.

You should be looking at including named special characters and iconic small units, not a whole new army list based on star trek. :D

Yarrick.

Your rules for Yarrick are a bit disappointing... I think something along the lines of 'may 'lend' his Inspiring bonus when supporting a firefight' would be a better special rule?

In 40k his Fortress provides ld10 plus a re-roll to any friendly IG formation within 18"... which sounds like some sort of special Engagement rule to me.

It is more based on the away teams from Execution hour and shadow point. ?These guys wear full body carapace and carry massive shot cannons, not red shirts and TV remotes. :D

that and I want to be able to use Arvus lighters.

I like the idea of always being inspiring, I might use it.

his making his formation fearless was to represent his leadership bonus from 40K. ?Equating a 40K game to an engagement, thus a 40K army to an epic formation.

That really is the perview of a seperate army list.

'special character' formations should contain one, at most two new unit types... not half a dozen or more.

For me 'Leadership' equates to blast markers, so you might want to consider giving Yarrick's Baneblade ATSKNF (Meaning it'd take 6BM's to break it)?

That could get a bit messy.  Since he is attached to another formation that wont have ATSKNF.

also, what would you suggest to replace the Imperial Navy team?

I am finding it easy to think up ideas for the Orks, but not the Imperials.

One Idea I have had is the renmants of the celestial Lions.  So a larger than normal marine formation, with a mixture of tactical, devastators and terminators, plus their transport.

He doesn't have to be attached...

It strikes me that the Imperial Navy could get a special character hotshot pilot / planes.

So a Thunderbolt fighter pilot with extra skills, or a marauder bomber which is more manueverable than normal (Moves like a fighter instead of a fighter bomber).

I would try and cram as many 'named' character units as possible into the list, rather than concentrating on adding large formations with multiple new units... so Marneus Calgar's bling-bling command squad, captain Shrike of the Raven Guard, the chaps from the Blood Angels, etc.

So you think it should go more towards named legendary units (such as all the Ork ones), rather than slightly more generic ones.

I also don't really want to touch the imperial navy air wings, since I don't like any of the current stats, so that stats I will give them will be off (such as MAruaders with DC).

Captain Tycho of the Blood Angels as part of the Death Company would be cool :)
But i don't hink that he would have any specialrules other that he adds a Captain to a Death Company unit perhabs togehter with Chaplain Lemartes.

Chapter Master Dante and Great Wolve Logan Grimnar would be an option too. After all both took part in the 3rd War for Argameddon.

Definitely.

There's just something really appealing about the prospect of fielding a named Character. :)

I mostly checked the Orks...

Squigzilla - I LOL'd the "Left Kannon/Right Arc - Da Uvver Left Kannon/Left Arc".  That's up there with E&C's grot list.

I'm not sure what the formation composition is supposed to be, but you shouldn't put Gazkhul on "any formation."  It will be extremely difficult to cost accurately.  Converting a Uge Fortress Warband to Fearless is just not the same as a Zzap Brigade.

The other Ork stuff looks okay for overall balance, except the Ammo Runts which seem a bit pointless.

Of course, it's all a bit on the fiddly side for my personal tastes, but I guess that's sort of the point...

I'm reckoning there could be stats for Yarrick on his Fortress, and also stats for Yarrick on foot (A Commissar with 'Commander' and 'Invulnerable Save' seems appropriate?).
