Mission Outcome:

Post Mortem:

I felt the score flattered me somewhat.

I was incredibly fortunate not to have had my Shadowswords and Stormhammer Companies broken, especially as both were on the brink and both had at least one superheavy with damage. That would have given the AM another 114 points, not enough to win a draw but not far off it either.

In addition, the AM had terrible luck with their Vortex Missile. Not only did it miss its target but it also moved into the monument, destroying it and the Assault troops that held the objective upon it. This proved to be a real turning point as I felt the battle was incredibly close on the left flank. I was fortunate enough to be able to seize the ruined monument objective in the last turn, this with only a wrecked and ramshackle group of vehicles and troops.

The way the game started off is what most IG players should expect. Heavy casualties on turns 1 & 2 in particular while units get into position before they can make their numbers count. In turn 1 in particular I was alarmed to have only taken 2 objectives. Fortunately the tide turned as I recklessly threw large numbers of Rough Riders and Tactical Troops at the enemy, total cannon fodder. This was my intention all along, to distract the AM with these cheap and tempting targets while my serious firepower set about breaking as many enemy units as possible.

The points formula was essential to allow me to play this way; I always used to load my IG armies with tanks and cavalry, often leaving out infantry where possible. The points formula really gives you the freedom to buy infantry companies en masse and for you to sacrifice them without much thought; like the cost, the VP yield is low. I had no issues at all with the formula in this game, although I'd be interested to know Craig's take on this.

As always, I had a lot of fun playing against Craig. Once again he was very unfortunate with many dice rolls and I know I'm due to get my comeuppance very soon!

Great report!

thoroughly enjoyed re-living my defeat! :)

I was cocky after the first turn, thinking my speed of deployment would have won me the game, however those bloody IG forces just kept coming!

In hindsight i think i should have given up on the 'right flank' and left your titan, shadowswords and capitol imperialis to dtrive slowly down the road, freeing up my forces to take the rest of the board.

Also, some damn poor rolls, like loosing 4 H-K missiles, 1 Helion, 2 plasma blasts and one las cannon shot on a single target and only getting 1 hit (from the lowly -1 TSM las cannon on two separate occasions makes me want to melt down my stormblades and make them into spoons!)

Next time!

Ah, I had forgotten about your misfortune with the missiles as well. Those Stormswords put the fear in me but I was jammy as hell that they never did a lot of damage. On the plus side your barrages for the first few turns were dead on every time!

But he lives on through his son so the Mandrake dynasty continues! ;)

Thanks for the kind comments!

Awesome!
I'm about to go back and read it again! Love the terrain! Thanks for going to the trouble of writing this up!

Thanks Matty! Comments like that make taking the time to record and write these reports worthwhile.

Personally I was a bit disappointed with this report (but not the game, that was great fun). A few days had lapsed since I played the battle and because I became too engrossed in the game some of the reporting fell by the wayside. You can see that in turns 3 & 4 in particular. Must do better!

It's easier with smaller battles to report and/or fewer turns. Because this was a large game by my modest standards and because it was 4 turns long - usually it is 3 max - I struggled to recall all of the details!

I'm delighted with your comment though, made my day!

Hi!

I am very glad you feel that the formula has permitted you to play IG as the fluff and background always intended, as a mass army that wins thrugh attrition!

It really comes through in your discussion that you planned your tactics accordingly and it worked as intended.

"Elite" armies (armies with very good, but more expensive troops), need to be very careful now. It used to be very easy for SM and eldar to leverage their awesome troops against armies like IG or Orks and easily secure objectives through sheer power of thier relative quality.

Now you must beware of the "horde" for quantity is its own quality. ;)

Speaking of being careful, I'm going to be taking Squats against the Eldar next. That was always a difficult match up for the Squats and I'm interested to see how they fare now that the Praetorian costs have increased significantly.

Has anyone else had a game with the new points costs yet?
