Post subject:  Epic War! Battle 3: Marines v Eldar 4,000 pts City Battle
This battle was the third fought as part of my Epic War! Campaign. To find out more about the Campaign, please see this thread;

Which units were used for this battle can be found on the pre-campaign force lists in the same thread. To help, the Marine force used was under code G75, the Eldar E5.

The terrain the battle was fought on was a city (H7 on Campaign Map). The Marine army was on Advance order and the Eldar on First Fire, meaning that the Eldar could deploy an extra 15cm forward of the standard deployment zone and would automatically have initiative on turn 1 of the battle.

Each army was worth 4,000 points, so again, the battle was fought with equal forces.

Turn 1 (post-movement):

The narrowing of the starting gap between both forces puts the Marines on the back foot. Eldar Grav tanks are position behind buildings while Jet Bikes are within range to strike. Fortunately for the Marines their infantry did not deploy inside their tanks, if they had there could have been massive carnage from the get go.

The Wind Rider Host jumps their Marine equivalents on the left flank and some Rhinos on the right. The Warlock Titan is on first fire orders, ready to unleash hell upon the (blue) Turbo-Laser-armed Warhound...

Turn 1 (End Phase):

The Eldar hit the Warhound with just about everything they have but are frustrated by the scatter dice and some poor rolls for damage. The 'hound has taken a bit of head damage but can easily fight on with half-CAF! The other notable kills for the Eldar were the elimination of Vindicators, the whole squad dying under heavy Tempest fire. The Vindicators were ready to wipe out Exarchs, so from the pointy-eared ones perspective, they had to die!

The Marines meanwhile make the Wind Rider Host suffer, breaking them in close combat! Smoke those jet bike mothers like it ain't no thing! While this destruction gives them heart, they have a long way to go - with most of the army tied up on First Fire, they were unable to capture many objectives, providing the Eldar with a flattering Turn 1 scoreline...

Marines: 16 VPs
Eldar: 27 VPs

Turn 2 (post-movement):

Charge! The Marines surge forward, with bikes and Land Speeders speeding across the left flank. Eldar Scouts are engaged by Assault Troops in a battle for an objective... While on the right flank more Assault Troops snatch a building and are threatened by in building Guardian fire... Terminators engage the Avatar in power-fist-to-lava combat. Can they kill a god?

Turn 2 (End Phase):

No, they can't! One Terminator dies at the hands of the Avatar, but the deity survives a further 3 "kills". Damn that fixed 2+ save!

The blue Warhound is unable to resist another double volley of Pulsar fire, weapons are destroyed, and finally a blow lands that fries the minds of those piloting the war machine... The other Warhound is also subjected to heavy fire - with Inferno Guns primed to fry up the Exarchs he is a Eldar enemy no.1! A well-aimed shot in the rear breaches the reactor and the 'hound cannot fire. Technicians struggle to repair the damage, but... BOOM! Meltdown! With both Warhounds out of the picture, the Eldar will be able to turn their attention to the Marine's infantry and vehicles...

Despite the loss of the Warhounds, turn 2 proves to be a good one for the Marines. Two objectives are captured, the Assault troops prove they were well prepared and like a bear enjoy slaughtering Scouts in the woods, while heavy Land Raider fire breaks a Falcon Host!

Marines: 32 VPs
Eldar: 27 VPs

Bikes surge deep into Eldar territoy and numerous Grav Tanks and Guardians! On the right flank more Terminators swarm around the Avatar, hellbent on heresy! Assault troops attack Guardians in a bid to break a War Host...

This ain't no time for a KitKat, but there's a lot of breaking going on! The Eldar Warhost cannot resist the onslaught of bikes and assault troops - but the Marines pay a heavy price with pretty much everything breaking under heavy Pulsar and Tempest fire! Thankfully from their perspective, the elimination of the last Scout captures another objective and ensures a draw!

Marines: 46 VPs
Eldar: 53 VPs

Conclusion: Both of us enjoyed the game although the Eldar player was very surprised at the final result. The Warhounds played a big part in the game, causing him no end of frustration. But once he had destroyed them, the shackles came off the Warlock Titan and Tempest company. The Marines had no answer to these beasts, with any hits landed simply bouncing off of the heavy armour.

So far as the Campaign goes, the game was a draw but the Eldar player extends his lead by virtue of the fact that he broke many more Marine units than they did Eldar. Things are beginning to look bleak for the Marines....

Nice report. Shame not auto kill if you loose close combat like in sm2 rules

I heartily agree DNME! It does make the Avatar feel a bit too powerful, although on the other hand, because the deployment zones were closer together, this is the first battle where the Avatar has actually managed to get involved. He is an absolute annoyance though!

I'm lucky in not having fought eldar as another opponent went to tyranids, he was awsome with eldar but tyranids he was invincible. I still have nightmares about those battles and trying to work out strategies with my mate to beat him.
