Epic War! Battle 2: Marines v Eldar 2,000 pts

This battle was the second fought as part of my Epic War! Campaign. To find out more about the Campaign, please see this thread;

Which units were used for this battle can be found on the pre-campaign force lists in the same thread. To help, the Marine force used was under code J74, the Eldar E1.

The terrain the battle was fought on was woods (F3 on Campaign Map), and with both armies on charge orders, a standard battle of epic was fought with no advantages to either side.

Each army was worth 2,000 points, so again, the battle was fought with equal forces.

Turn 1:

I'll be honest from the get-go: this is battle was very bruising for me and will haunt me for some time to come. It gives me no pleasure writing it, but I hope that by doing so, it will be a cathartic experience that may save me some cash in therapy fees...

I realised as soon as we rolled up the terrain that I was in deep trouble (I'm the Marine player). I had made the classic schoolboy error of getting muddled up with my armies and managed to send a predominantly mechanised army into a battle that would need a good amount of infantry to win (ever tried to capture an objective in woods with a Land Raider?!).

Anyway, I had to get my Land Raiders into areas where they could at least fire. CHAAAAAAAAAAARRRGGGEE!!! A few Land Raiders get battered, but they pick off a few members of the Spirit Host on the hill...

Marines: 20VPs
Eldar: 20VPs

Turn 2:

This turn I took an absolute hammering. Stuff gets blown apart all over the place and a lot of my units are broken. I destroy a Prism Cannon. It's all I can do not to just curl up into the foetal position and weep.

That's description enough.

Marines: 16 VPs
Eldar: 36VPs

Post-battle retreat!

In any normal game of Epic the battle ends as soon as the VP threshold is reached. Not so with Epic War! My Marine forces immediately go into fall back mode and try to get the hell out of there alive. The fascist and horrifically murderous Eldar have other ideas and start casually picking off my men as they beat a hasty retreat.

Salt is firmly rubbed into the wounds as literally everything is broken while in retreat. My sanity crumbles, and I am left wondering which fool wrote those damn rules that allowed such a situation to arise...

Note: The fact that my opponent scored an "overwhelming victory" and broke everything means he has soared way ahead of me in the campaign points stakes. I need to chalk up a win quickly to get back into the fray!

Final note: I lost 5 Land Raiders to Guardian fire during this game. Yep, that means 5 different tanks failed rolls of 2+!!!!! Inexplicable!
