The Close Combat phase kicks off with John playing a Chaos Card.

One of the Mutants is momentarily inconvenienced by a bout of Uncontrollable Flatulence that soon effects all the enemy nearby. (A Nurgle agent in disguise?)

Amidst all the Uncontrollable sniggering and giggling as the mutant trumps ever louder the Sisters set too with a passion. Limbs, heads and oodles of blood fly in all directions. Surprisingly one of the Cultist Thudd Guns kills off a Repentia while a Seraphim on Fall Back boots the holy crud out of a Mutant.

Again John had some bad luck and not having won the Initiative really hurt him. Despite some of the Sisters being forced to half their Caf total (rounding down) they had plenty of support in the form of the Prioress (Combat Leader) Sister Hospitilar (5+ Medic save - up to five? stands per turn) and the Castigator (Don't like Cleric) who used Embolden (+1 Caf and units immune to morale within 15cm) as well as the Repentia are effected by Holy Rage. Oh, again the re-roll for 1's and 2's is tops.
(We discussed if all these abilities should apply and as they were all different and came from different sources, it was allowed.)

Not a bad exchange rate but my luck can't stay this good much longer.

There were other bitty Close Combats around the table. The Penitent killed the Minotaur and an Eradicator shot dead a charging mutant just before it reached her but the other main melee was on the left...

Fortunately the War Dogs had faired badly in the First Fire phase. Still having retained the initiative the Inquisitorial Stormtroopers went first against the Juggers with predictable results. However that meant the Punishers had an extra D6 to their Caf resulting in total victory.

Costly on both sides but I'd rather lose Stormtroopers than Juggers.

The Advance phase kicked off with a blast of Holy Promethium as three Immolators let loose. It's a hard angle to photograph but the Prioress was out and the two Mutants were in. Amazingly enough Angron bursts into flames (rolled a one for his save) and has to offer up one of his Chaos Cards to stay in the fight.

While I happily plug away again at the Chaos Horde... playing shoot the Troll and gunning down any heretic that had the affront to survive the close combats...

...John uncovers his last hidden units that attempt to do the same to the Archangels and Repentia with mixed results. One of John's Cultist Champions guns down the last Seraphim holding the pass leaving it open for use next turn.

The End Phase arrives. The Cultists all rally under Angrons blistering glare. I check if the Archangels have broken and I'm delighted to find their (and the Celestials) BP is 5, fan-bloody-tastic! Nothing more is broken yet but the Seraphim and the Stormtroopers are very close...

Chaos Casualties... Blood for the Blood God!

Imperial Casualties... The Emperor Protects.

Cultists: 61VP         Imperials: 43VP

Here's a question for people who have read my Sister Repentia rules: Using Assault double VP rules would the Repentia have provided 6VP on the end phase of the third turn or would they have to be broken conventionally to gain the extra 3 points?
We each rolled 2D6 and the highest won. (Me!) So in this game they have to be broken conventionally to gain the extra points.

The only thing remaining was to roll for John's reinforcements. He made his 4+ roll so a force would be materialising... He rolled for only one unit, Ha!.. He then rolled for type... A 'six!' players choice... Oh, crumbs!..

Three units of Khorne Daemon Engines, a unit of Cannon of Khorne and a honkin' huge Banelord Titan all under the malevolent thrall of 'Cadoras' the Lord of Battle otherwise known as the Shopping Trolley of Khorne!!! (Dun! Dun! Duuuh!)

Er, abhor the witch to er, live... but Khorne doesn't like Psykers... he's actually just misunderstood... eh, friends?..

They're largely your rules you're using in this battle, so you decide  :)

If it were a standard assault game I'd have doubled it.

Thanks Zap, It is sometimes good to get perspective from others who have no invested interest. In future that's what will happen.

I'm afraid I am having a break today (Wife's orders) from Editing/Downloading and posting pictures and typing reports from scribbled notes that now make little sense.

After a battle we always like to vote one unit or model as man/sister of the match sort of thing.
For having achieved something amazing during the game and assuming they survived they are rewarded with a slight stats increase, or extra ability, or given a few replacements, or even brought back from the dead (badly wounded unable to fight for x-amount of games).
Normally we can only vote for our opponents units which has worked so far but it may be fun to give you a say too. At the end of the game I would like to propose you make a suggestion of who should be picked and why. Interested?..

Turn 5

Well it had to happen sooner or later. John wins the Initiative and the winds of fate once more change direction...John smiles unpleasantly at me so I know he's up to something...

Faced with the choices I decide to push forward instead of pulling back while the bulk of my force covers their advance. Victory or death! I'm in a good possition and the last two combats showed the Sisters have guts so what the hell. Besides times running out.

The Repentia in an attempt to tie down all those annoying Mutant survivors charge in. John causes further dismay as a unit of Khorne Berserkers jump out of the Advancing Deathdealer Chaos Engines and rip into the Repentia, Archangels and Prioress. Again another crushing melee of charge and counter charge ensues as more and more troops are committed in an attempt to gain superiority. On both sides units move into position to kill the victors.

Before the Punishers can move off they are charged by a mob of Khorne Acolytes...
Khorne Cultist Acolyte Plastic Bloodletters.
10cm, 6+ fixed save, +3 Caf,  Swords/Axes - -    - -    Triple charge, Fearless

Angron on powerful leathery wings soars above the combatants and lands at the foot of a rock spur swarming with Battle Sisters. Again a wild combat ensues as both sides are gripped by their lust for battle. Angron swells in power from the bloodshed and his Ferocious Roar issues his challenge. Horror strikes at the Imperial force radiating in tangible waves of terror. (The Eradicators offer him a breath mint.)

Because of Angron four units go on Fall Back orders just at the right time. The Shadowsword and Retributors on the hill who were waiting to fire. The Stormtroopers engaged against the Cultist Khorne Acolytes and the remaining Novitiate.

The very air is rent asunder as the Cannon of Khorne wreathed by deadly energies launch three obsidian spheres of crackling energy toward the Imperial lines. Each sphere hits their targets in turn. Only one finds a weakness in it's targets armour and the Shadowsword it was fired at explodes in a storm of shrapnel killing even more of the enemy.

The Sisters reply is just as accurate. A Squad of Retributors fire on the Banelord and strip all of it's shields in the one salvo.
Soon the Banelord is caught in a deadly crossfire. Some Exorcist blow the Titans Doomfist off sending it spinning end over end to land with a sickening crunch on a Chaos Marine stand. A shot rips into the Titans head killing some of the crew and another damages the Titans Leg. Even the Titans Doomburner is damaged and requires urgent repair. The Banelord can must roll a 4+ to move or fire and it's Caf is halved for the rest of the battle. It may only move at half speed and may not enter difficult terrain... but it's still standing.

In a restless flurry the uneven exchange of fire peters out and the Close Combat phase begins.

Angron quickly dispatches the eradicators and John plays Blood Rage (very apt) allowing Angron to move and fight again. Angron lands on top of a Shadowsword that is already on Fall Back orders and tears into it. The effect of Angrons Furious Roar have left the nearby Retributors helpless to exact revenge in the Advance phase while a squad of Stromtroopers engaged in close combat are also paralysed with fear. It was a perfect use of a Greater Daemon and Chaos Card.

Reeling from Angrons renewed attack the combat on the left flank takes on a bitter aspect as both sides fight to the death.

A seemingly minor engagement on the extreme right becomes far more serious as when the last Chaos Fanatic dies John plays Plague Bearer. Two stands of Battle Sisters and four of PDF Riflemen die horribly from the disease. Damn, those covert Nurgle infiltrators.

Although the combat in the Centre starts well for Chaos fate turns once again denying John victory here.
The Stormhammer repeatedly shoots the Juggers that charge it and blasts away at the Banelord. Despite failing their saves the Juggers charge still goes ahead. It takes all three Juggers to destroy the Superheavy Tank but it dies none the less.

The Prioress killed a Berserker in the First Fire phase while the Repentia hack and slash like never before. Gripped by Holy Rage and benefiting from the Prioress' Combat Leadership and the tender mercies of the nearby Hospitiler the Sisters reek vengeance on those around them breaking the Berserkers (for shame) and killing all the mutants to hand. Their glory is short lived however as the Daemon Engines prepare to smash the survivors in the Advance Fire phase.

Sorry I forgot to take close ups of the Close Combat results. Hopefully you will be able to see what you need here.

The Repentia are wiped out, gunned down by the Daemonic Engines of destruction. Imperial fire proves inadequate to the task and the forces of Chaos enjoy the novelty of fire superiority. The Banelord must roll a 4+ to fire and does. A salvo of Havoc Missiles slash into the trees housing the Retributors that had stripped it's shields. Five stands of Retributors become crispy critters in the blinding flash of the explosions.
Cadoras the Lord of Battles slaughters Sisters and Stormtrooper with ease with his Deathstorm Gatling and Hellstrike Cannon.

The Imperials are given a taste of their own medicine when a Caldron of Blood spews molten Daemon blood over it's foes.

At last the last shot is fired and the End phase has arrived

Angron would be pretty scary in such a crowded battlefield!

Chaos Casualties. Khorne! Khorne! Khorne! Khorne! Corn! Corn! Porn! Porn!... hey wait a minuet...

Imperial Casualties. I did that, what a mess...  :sigh:

After that round I felt like I had been through the ringer. I should have pulled back and shot the crapola out of him but oh no I wanted to do the Cinematic heroising scene type charge of the Light Brigade... what a dope!

The Banelord raised five of it's shields and fixed it's Doomburner. All the Chaos Cultists under the ever watchful eyes of their Daemon masters automatically passed any morale rolls required and John rolled for Reinforcements...

He rolled for two Hordes one of each type and they arrived in the usual manner.

I look at the battlefield, I look at the casualties and I look at my watch and decide to call it. I would have prefered to fight my way off the board but that was a two day/night extravaganza and I was bushed...

Cultists: 142VP         Imperials: 60VP

Chaos Win

                Blood for the Blood God!

For winning the battle John will receive a bonus of 50VP's  which adds to the earned points above. These points can be used for many things like Titan Repairs, change of weapons, some replacement units, experience and skills. His entire army also gains one point of Élan that measures the armies overall fighting spirit. He will also be able to retrieve/recover men and material if he decides not to make a pursuit roll. Which he declined to do.

The Sisters are allowed to withdraw in fair order taking what wounded they can find but leaving their damaged/destroyed vehicles behind. These will be rolled for later, secretly.

Man/Sister/Thing of the Match.
My vote goes to Angron for John's excellent use of his Roar and Chaos Cards...

John voted for the Repentia for wading in again and again with Khorne like bloodiness.

Who do you think should be the Man/Sister/Thing of the match? It does not have to be any of the above suggestions... please give reason.

Thanks for watching.  :D

Yay for Chaos!  I usually expect the defender to get smashed in an assault game, but your Warp stone and reinforcement rules made that an interesting fight!

Hard to really get an idea from a batrep, but sounds to me like the Demagogue kept the Chaos forces in the battle early when they may otherwise have collapsed and would be a candidate for the "good guys".  From a purely spectator point of view I'd give the "bad guy" vote to the Immolators  8v)

Yeah, the Demagogue lent a hand but for all his points he didn't do anything but cower in a corner and rant and rave at his mutant horde egging them on. He did have the Combat Leader ability though which helped even things out but the mutants detonation collars helped more in the way of morale checks... Ka-Boom!  :vD  He did manage to survive quite a while but died in the Artillery barrage against Angron.

                         Possible Options

Bad Guys
One of Johns Cultist Champions kept shooting anything that tried to block the rock pass right up until the last when he was done in by an Arco Flagellant in Holy Rage while he attacked a Repentia.

Good Guys
The Immolators placed as they were, were tops but it got frustrating when the Sisters kept getting in the way by surviving all the time. One did manage to set Angron on fire costing him a Chaos Card.  :vD

John said the Combat Leader, Holy Rage and Medic combo made things very difficult and worked three times in a row. This was down to the Prioress, Castigator and Hospitiler staying close to the fight. This made the Repentia and Archangels especially deadly resulting in there success.

Dud of the match
The Deacon Battery wasn't as effective as I imagined. With the 2-10BP making it unpredictable and the lowish -2TSM proved worthless this time around as Angron got hit twice and made his saves. For 300 points I was robbed!

Overall I had a great time. It was a great challenge I loved how the Sisters worked a treat. Thumbs up to the guys who toiled over their rules and stats.

John's ruthless use of his Mutants as a shield was very intimidating. I wonder if I could have broken through if I had chucked my Punishers and Seraphim in team handed at the start? But then what could I counter the Daemons with after?

John had the harder task I think and managed quite well. Keeping the Chaos cards until Angron appeared must have been hfrustrating and then how he used the few he did was extreme. Perhaps man of the match should go to John?

I think if I played this again I would change the 25VP per Warp stone to 15VP and drop the army sizes greatly OR use the 200cm length not the 120cm width of the table next time. Normally the smaller area works for the smaller number of defenders in an assault but with 5,000 points I should have used the full table. Ah well, next time.
