Post subject: | My Biel Tan at Cancon for the last 3 years. |
Hi Gents Given all the discussion on the Biel Tan list at the moment i though i take some time to collate some info about my last 3 Cancons and the Biel Tan lists i have taken. I have tried to remember, track down and ask others for as much info about those games to give you bit of an overview and some summaries. no full batreps but hopefully something useful will come from the below info. I apologise to those for anything i may have gotten wrong and ask any of my opponents to jump in and correct me where necessary, (except Jim). Cancon 2015 BT V4.1 8 Shining Spear, Autarch, Exarch 8 Shining Spear, Exarch Farseer, 6 Guardians, Heavy Weapon Platform 4 Ranger 4 Ranger 3 Falcon, 2 Fire Storm 3 Falcon, 2 Fire Storm 3 Night Spinners Scorpion Void Spinner Avatar Phantom Titan The idea with this army was it was solid fire power base around phantom, VS, Scorps and NS providing long range power. It had good AA and with 2 spear formations it had solid engagement value as well. If anything it needed another guardian formation to help with Avatar launching potential. The games are from memory so are little hazy on exact details but i will do my best to keep it accurate. I also note that this was V4.1 changed after this event and saw changes to various units through out the army. Event results This list came second overall behind Shadlowlords DKOK Game 1 Fatdex- Nids -NORMAL ASSAULT SWARM [400] Tyranid Warrior, 4 Termagant, 2 Carnifex, Zoanthrope, Hive Tyrant, 4 Hormaguant - NORMAL ASSAULT SWARM [350] Tyranid Warrior, 4 Termagant, Zoanthrope, Carnifex, Hive Tyrant, 4 Hormaguant -NORMAL ASSAULT SWARM [350] Tyranid Warrior, 4 Termagant, Zoanthrope, Carnifex, Hive Tyrant, 4 Hormaguant -NORMAL ASSAULT SWARM [350] Tyranid Warrior, 4 Termagant, Zoanthrope, Carnifex, Hive Tyrant, 4 Hormaguant -BRUTE SWARM [225] 1 Hive Tyrant, 3 Exocrines -BRUTE SWARM [225] 1 Hive Tyrant, 3 Exocrines -GENESTEALER SWARM [150] 6 Genestealer - GENESTEALER SWARM [150] 6 Genestealer -GENESTEALER SWARM [150] 6 Genestealer -HARASSMENT SWARM [225] 1 Harridan and 0-4 Gargoyles -HARASSMENT SWARM [225] 1 Harridan and 0-4 Gargoyles -LICTOR SWARM [200] 4 Lictor Win to Eldar 3-0 Eldar called corner deployment in this game. This allowed the nid formations to singled out and weight of fire bought to bear. The phantom hunted the brute swarms. The nids struggled failing some activations which menat they came forward piece meal. Having some many skimmers real advantaged the eldar which is how the spears would deal things like the stealers. Game 2 Dobbsy, Space Wolves -Great Company 500 2 x Grey Hunters Hunter 2 x Blood Claws 5 x Rhinos -Great Company 425 2 x Grey Hunters Wolf Lord -Warlord Titan 825 -Predators 325 Hunter -Long Fangs 350 2 x Razorbacks - Swift Claws 200 -Land Speeders 200 -Thunderbolts 175 Eldar win 4-0 The space wolves sent a large flanking force down one flank, the eldar deployed table centre and concentrated on the warlord and preds with the speeders down the centre. The eldar stalled the flank attack long enough to take two turns of strip shields and the phantom to take out the warlord. What was left of the eldar centre then went on to support the flank attack off the space wolves and after some cagey assaults got the upper hand. (Dobbsy's space wolves have to be one of the most amazingly well painted epic armies out there) Game 3 Shadowlord-DKOK 1. Regimental HQ 525 Death Korps Supreme Commander, 19 Death Korps Infantry units, Gorgon Siege Transporters (2 Gorgons) 2. Infantry Coy 425 Death Korps Commander, 19 Death Korps Infantry units, Gorgon Siege Transporters (2 Gorgons) 3. Heavy Support Battery 125 3 Hydra or Heavy Anti-Aircraft Platform, 3 Trojans 4. Deathstrike Silo 250 Death Korps Deathstrike Missile Silo 5. Warhound Titan 275 6. Thunderbolt Sqn 150 7. Super Heavy Tank Pl 200 Shadowsword 8. Super Heavy Tank Pl 200 Shadowsword 9. Warhound Titan 275 10. Death Rider Pl 150 6 Death Korps Rough Rider units (with 'scout' ability) 11. Infantry Coy 425 Death Korps Commander, 19 Death Korps Infantry units, Gorgon Siege Transporters (2 Gorgons) DKOK win 2-0 This was a brutal game played through a ruined city. the DKOK steadliy moved forward taking the ground picking off eldar formations where they could with their ranged formations. several failed activation over a couple of turns notable the phantom and void spinner had a real impact on the eldar plan. The spears managed some thricky assault moves trapping troops in gorgans and destroying them but it was too little to late. The weight of all the WE and the well considered moves from the DKOK player proved to much for the eldar. Game 4 Onyx-Iron Warriors 1. Iron Warriors Company 425 Warsmith Obliterator 2. Defiler Assault Pack 425 3. Defiler Assault Pack 425 4. Chosen 125 5. Obilterator Cult 350 6. Dreadnaught Assault Pack 250 5 x Dreadclaw 7. Super Heavy Company 225 Decimator 8. Devastation Class Cruiser 150 9. Ordinatus Medrengard 625 Eldar win 5-0 The eldar had a great first turn which included totally dodging the orbital bombardment and then guardians repelled an assault from the drop pod dreadies. The scorpion engaged well over the game aginst the defilers as did the phantom who also managed to kill the SC. The ordiantus did some damage and broke multiple units some of which didnt rally for the game. largely the eldar were able to fan forward supporting each other well. Aggressive shinning spear movements at the end of turn two saw them destroy the ordinatus which was camped on the blitz. Game 5 Tim B- Codex Astartes 1. TACTICAL Det 450 Supreme Commander, Hunter, Rhinos 2. ASSAULT [175] 3. DEVASTATOR [250] 4. TERMINATOR [400] Librarian 5. LAND RAIDER [450] Hunter, Vindicator 6. THUNDERHAWK [200] 7. LAND SPEEDER [200] 2 Landspeeder, 3 Tornado 8. SCOUT [175] 4 Scouts, Razorback 9. THUNDERBOLT SQUADRON [175] 10. WARHOUND [275] 11. PREDATOR [250] Win Eldar (score?) apologise to Tim as i can't recall all the details of this game. Game 6 Lucas- Biel-Tan Eldar Craftworld 4.1 1. Avatar 0 2. Aspect Warrior Host 575 Autarch 6xDire Avengers 2xHowling Banshees 4xWave Serpent 3. Guardian Warhost 150 Farseer 4 x Guardians 3 xHeavy Weapon Platform 4. Windrider Troupe 200 5 x Jetbikes Vyper Jetbikes 5. Windrider Troupe 200 5 xJ etbikes Vyper Jetbikes 6. Swords of Vaul Troupe 250 5 x Fire Prism 7. Swords of Vaul Troupe 250 3 x Falcon 2 x Firestorm 8. Swords of Vaul Troupe 250 3 x Falcon 2 x Firestorm 9. Night Spinner Troupe 175 3 x Night Spinner 10. Revenant Titans 650 2 x Revenant Titan 11. Nightwings 300 3 x Nightwing Win My eldar 2-0 I won the roll off and choose corners to try and maximise my longer range shooting over lucass. This was a hugely cagey game and the revenants were great at sniping my units before retreating once they were in position. However the Phantom, scorpion and VS proved too much and got the ascendancy over lucas. |

Cancon 2016 ASPECT WARRIOR WARHOST [400] 8 Shining Spear, Exarch, Autarch GUARDIAN WARHOST [200] Farseer, 4 Guardians, 3 Heavy Weapon Platform, 3 Support Weapon Platforms GUARDIAN WARHOST [200] Farseer, 4 Guardians, 3 Heavy Weapon Platform, 3 Support Weapon Platforms GUARDIAN WARHOST [150] Farseer, 6 Guardians, Heavy Weapon Platform RANGER TROUPE [100] 4 Ranger RANGER TROUPE [100] 4 Ranger SWORDS OF VAUL TROUPE [250] 3 Falcon, 2 Fire Storm SWORDS OF VAUL TROUPE [250] 3 Falcon, 2 Fire Storm SWORDS OF VAUL TROUPE [295] 3 Fire Prism, 2 Fire Storm ENGINE OF VAUL TROUPE [250] Scorpion ENGINE OF VAUL TROUPE [250] Scorpion VOID SPINNER [275] Void Spinner VOID SPINNER [275] Void Spinner the idea of this army that it would fan out allowing the shooting formations to run hit and run in and out of the guardian and ranger line. Good AA but only one aspect which was the BTS was my only really concern with the list. I quiet liked this build and felt spam WE would probably offer the biggest threat to this build. Event results This came second behind Steve's (Beefcake 4000) Squats Game 1 Zac- IRON WARRIORS 1. IRON WARRIORS COMPANY [440] (BTS) 6 Chaos Space Marines and 2 Havocs, Warsmith (Supreme Commander), 4 Chaos Rhino, Stalker 2. DEFILER ASSAULT PACK [425] 6 Defilers 3. DEFILER ASSAULT PACK [425] 6 Defilers 4. IRON WARRIOR TERMINATORS [350] Iron Warriors Lord, 4 Iron Warrior Terminator, Obliterator 5. CHOSEN [125] 4 Chaos Space Marine Scouts 6. OBLITERATOR CULT [350] 4 Obliterators 7. ARTILLERY BATTERY [375] 4 Chaos Basilisks, Stalker 8. ARTILLERY BATTERY [350] 4 Chaos Basilisks, Emplacements Solid Win for the eldar (cant recall exact score) Cant recall the exact way the game played out but I believe the eldar followed the game plan of picking on the smaller units first getting a strong activation advantage and continued to roll from there. Zac might be able to add some more here. Game 2 Adam- Biel-Tan Craftworld (NetEA Army Compendium v2014 (v4.2)) 2 1. SWORDS OF VAUL TROUPE [375] 5 Fire Prism, Fire Storm 2. PHANTOM TITAN [750] 3. SWORDS OF VAUL TROUPE [375] 5 Fire Prism, Fire Storm 4. AVATAR [0] 5. GUARDIAN WARHOST [150] Farseer, 7 Guardians 6. ENGINE OF VAUL TROUPE [250] Scorpion 7. VOID SPINNER [275] Void Spinner 8. RANGER TROUPE [125] 5 Ranger 9. RANGER TROUPE [100] 4 Ranger 10. ASPECT WARRIOR WARHOST [400] 8 Shining Spear, Exarch, Autarch My eldar had a solid win, can't recall the exact score. This game started well for my eldar trying to lure the phantom forward where effective crossfires could be placed on it. Due to some pretty ordinary dice rolls i lost more than I wanted to and took longer than i wanted to try and drop the phantom. Adam played well and given only just started with eldar missed a couple of opportunities to exploits some shit dice rolling on my behalf. The end result was both eldar players were pretty beaten up. Game 3 Shadowlord- SPACE WOLVES -6 Fenrisian Wolves -GREAT COMPANY [625] 6 Grey Hunters - Rhinos, Wolf Lord, 2 Wolf Guard Terminators, 2 Blood Claws, Land Raider Crusader -2 Thunderbolt Fighter-Bombers -WOLF GUARD TERMINATORS [375] 4 Wolf Guard Terminators, Wolf Priest, Drop Pods -Space Wolves Landing Craft -GREAT COMPANY [575] 6 Grey Hunters, Wolf Priest, 2 Wolf Guard Terminators, 2 Blood Claws, Rhinos, Hunter -Space Wolves Strike Cruiser -5 Land Speeder -Space Wolves Landing Craft Win to the eldar 5-0 this game was all or nothing in the first turn. I had a plan of how i would deploy aginst this list by using my numbers to create areas of denial preventing effecting drop and planet fall also ensuring nothing was intermingled. I was forced in a corner but set up away from my blitz. Matts bombardment clipped a couple of formations handing out few BM but no huge damage. The first landas that planet fell was forced to land out the front of my lines and was only possibly able to engage scouts. This landa and formations on board were subsquently pretty beaten up and broke before the eldar. The second landa promised more coming in for an air assault, however a lucky crit from a firestorm saw it go down. the game was called at this point but had the second landa made it in it would have been interesting despite the eldar having the advantage. I don't doubt Matts ability to wrestle victory from the jaws of defeat. Game 4 Beefcake- Thurgrim’s Stronghold Squats (Thurgrims Stronghold 1.5) 2 1. Berzerker Brotherhood 1 Hearthguard unit 7 Berzerker units Rhinos 2. Berzerker Brotherhood 1 Hearthguard unit 5 Berzerker units Rhinos 3. Overlord Overlord Airship 12 Goliath 2x Goliath MegaCannon 13. Land Train 1 Land Train Engine 2x Berserker Battle Car Bomb Battle Car Win to the squats 2-0 This was a really cagey game but the 5 overlords in the end proved to much for the eldar depsite much carnage inflicted on both sides in general. The prevlance of WE RA4 and good shooting is a tough ask for this list. Steve played well and gave me nothing. Steve might be able to remember more details of this game that he can add. Game 5 Kendall (jehova)-Thurgrim’s Stronghold Squats (Thurgrims Stronghold 1.5) 3 1. Berzerker Brotherhood - 200 1 Hearthguard unit 7 Berzerker units Termite Tunneller 2. Berzerker Brotherhood - 200 1 Hearthguard unit 7 Berzerker units 4 x Rhino 3. Berzerker Brotherhood - 175 1 Hearthguard unit 7 Berzerker units 4 X Rhino 4. Thunderfire - 100 2 x Thunderfire Cannons 5. Thunderfire - 100 2 x Thunderfire Cannons 6. Thunderfire - 100 2 x Thunderfire Cannons 7. Bikers Guild - 225 3 x Bike Units Guildmaster 3 x Guild Trike 8. Bikers Guild - 275 3 x Bike Units Grand Warlord 3 x Guild Trike 9. Overlord - 250 Overlord Airship 10. Overlord - 250 Overlord Airship 11. Overlord - 250 Overlord Airship 12. Colossus - 500 1 x Colossus Living Ancestor 13. Land Train - 375 1 x Land Train Engine Berserker Battle Car Bomb Battle Car Draw (score?) This game was played corners as it was terrain heavy with a city in the middle of the table. I tired to utillise the terrain to hid a bit from the dirrect fire and maximise on my indirect and popup attacks. In a nut shell and from memory the game was fair bloody and was essentially piece trading. The overlords spotter and the land train, colossus smashed into the eldar but i managed to do some damage back. However the game timed out at the end of turn 3 with no clear winner and it would have been hard to say who would have gotten up from there, the eldar maybe... Kenny could probably add something here. Game 6 Cal- Codex Astartes i dont have access to the list. it was a double termie ground force with a warhound pack. so no thawks or Spaceships. Win to the eldar 4-0 This was a strong game for the eldar. i refused a flank setting up down one side creating large areas where the termies couldn't deep strike and ensured no intermingling. Cal played well but his list really lacked the tools to crack into the eldar army and the shooting was just way too strong. The eldar fanned out dealing with the marine formations as they came across. The termies come down immediately in front of the eldar trying to slow the advancing the castle and grab the objectives in the middle. The eldar were easily able to pick off and clipping assault the termies to break them. really this was an example of the Biel Tan list having it totally over the Marine list. If i can get the list of Cal i will post it up. |

I guess this list has been examined by many now and there are varying thoughts on it. Event result. This list took out the event this year. Game 1 Duncan- Tyranids (Tournament Pack 2016-01-21) TYRANID SWARM [395] 5x Termagants, Hive tyrant, Tyranid Warriors, Zoanthrope, Carnifex, Haruspex, 2x Hormagaunts TYRANID SWARM [410] 4x Termagants, Hive tyrant, Symbiote, 2x Zoanthrope, Malefactor, Trygon, 2x Hormagaunts TYRANID SWARM [200] 4x Termagants, 2x Tyranid Warriors, 2x Hormagaunts TYRANID SWARM [200] 4x Termagants, 2x Tyranid Warriors, 2x Hormagaunts DACTYLIS SWARM [575] 6x Dactylis (Medium Swarm) EXOCRINE SWARM [175] 3x Exocrine GENESTEALER SWARM [200] 8x Geanstealers LICTOR SWARM [200] 4x Lictors HARRIDIAN SWARM [210] Harridan, 3x Gargoyles HARRIDIAN SWARM [210] Harridan, 3x Gargoyles TRYGON SWARM [225] 3x Trygon 4-0 Eldar Win 2175pts to 125pts I called corners on this game and managed to use the scorpions to kill enough of the dactylis swarm swarm to break them before they could fire. The VS then finished them off later in the turn with disrupt. The eldar were then able to single out and target formations as they came across the table. turn 2 the spears put pressure on the blitz which drew back one of the large swarms to cover the blitz. This allowed the BTS formtions to be surronded, broken and then destroyed. Clipping assaults from the spears helped break the other larger swarm on the Blitz. in conclusion I think the nids struggle against this BT build. Game 2 Chris - MINERVAN TANK LEGION LIST TANK COMPANY 625 10 LEMAN RUSS TANK COMPANY 675 10 EXTERMINATORS HYDRA SUPREME COMMANDER TANK COMPANY 575 10 EXTERMINATORS HYDRA SALAMANDER SCOUT PLATOON 125 SALAMANDER COMMAND SALAMANDER SCOUT PLATOON 100 SUPER HEAVY TANK PLATOON 200 -SHADOWSWORD WARHOUND TITAN 275 WARHOUND TITAN 275 THUNDERBOLT SQUADRON 150 5-0 Eldar Win 2450pts to 350 This game was played corners. there was a large hill (realm of battle table) in the middle. most of the objectives from both sides were placed. Also on the hill was fortificatiosn which the rangers held before the bgaurdians moved up to occupy. The eldar vehicles used the lip of the hill to single out a tank formation and kill enough to break followed by disrupt arty to kill, rinse and repeat. Turn 3 the eldar went balls out seeing alot of assaults and crossfires to finish things off. This game was pretty brutal for Chris and he was a great sport about it. Game 3 Round 3 Mic(Eldar) vs Jim (Minervans) 1-0 Eldar Win 900pts to 850 Jim - Minervan Tank Legion (NetEA Tournament Pack 2014) SUPER-HEAVY TANK COMPANY [600] Supreme Commander SUPER-HEAVY TANK COMPANY [500] DEATHSTRIKE MISSILE BATTERY [200] FLAK BATTERY [150] WARHOUND [275] ARTILLERY BATTERY [250] FLAK BATTERY [150] SUPER-HEAVY TANK COMPANY [500] ARTILLERY BATTERY [250] SALAMANDER SCOUT PLATOON [125] Salamander Command Vehicle Draw Eldar 1-0 850pts to 825pts Ahhh my game against Jim. I played across the table as i wanted to target his artillery and smaller formations straight away. The table was a ruined city so we were both really happy with it. The most pivotal thing of this game was that the Minervans won the strat roll turn 1 and 2 which allowed him to close the void spinners down with his DS and Manticores. This swung the balance into the minervans favour from the start. the eldar managed to inch forward before utiliseing some good crossfires and asssults to break then destroy the BTS and hammer another of the SHC. The spears also got a solid clipping assault on a couple of the smaller minervan formations which broke several in one hit for no recourse. We agreed to call the game at turn 3 due to time constraints, but Jim and I both know had we gone to turn 4 the eldar would have won the day... Thanks for going over your old battles for us. 17 games and only one loss that is a very good record. One comment I would make is that in the UK we get the odd aircraft heavy list which could risk the Eldar AA, but these are not the norm. If I was your opponent, I'd ask to your dice though. |

I agree, Very interesting write up, many thanks indeed. I note that each list is significantly different, using - a Phantom single Shining Spear and single VS in 2015, - 3x SoV, 2x VS and 3x Guardians with a single Shining Spear in 2016 - 2x SoV, 2x VS, 2x Guardian and 2x Shining Spear in 2017. But the general strategy was the same in each case, using firepower to break or destroy enemy activations and then capture objectives. This tends to suggest that it is as much the player skill as OP formations. The battle analyses were also instructive, with draws against stronger players using high activation armies, enjoying some luck on occasion (always handy, but sometimes a game changer), and some 'dream match ups'. To be fair, it also seems that Mic has been refining the list to support his strategy, while also removing some weaknesses by doubling up on key formations. |

Looks like you won both games you had against other Biel Tan lists, implying that at least some of that impressive record is due in part to player skill. |

My game vs Mic in 2016 with the Iron Warriors came down to terrain I was never able to get into a spot fast enough to do any damage before Mic shot and moved away Was a close game but my list lacked the speed to catch mic Score I believe was 3-1 or 3-0 |

There one of my favourite for sure, but i play marines, orks (including gargants), titans, Nids, world eaters, Blood angels in 30K. I ran Marines at Cancon 2014 and came 5th. I have used other armies here and there too. I have a back log of other armies and projects i need to find time to assemble and throw on the table. Mic |

Not convinced about planetfall, but then the second getting shot down perhaps justified it! Always going to be a binary list though. Overall quite a few, err, "fluffy" lists getting punished. |
