The Marines won this in turn 4 with DTF and T&H (and maybe TSNP, I can't remember if the Trygons rallied). Jon took this to turn 4, as the two remaining swarms and Dom had a lock on most of the objectives. The drop was good again, breaking some 750 points of bugs and putting the Marines in position to engage and kill the 'dule before the bugs got to responded. I actually passed on the first activation, to reduce the number of things the bugs could hit back with. The Biovores went on overwatch in response. That, the river and the Dom forced me to push in the other direction to break the remaining two swarms and the Harridan. |

Trygons rallied, but it was for naught by that point... |

Had a chance to draft up my thoughts on the Raven Guard, so I'll provide what I can: -The first turn is extremely aggressive. Between the orbital bombardment and the attacks from 3 Deathwinds, there were a lot of blast markers put down. -Retaining with the dropping marines is a strong follow up punch to the drop. Before I had the chance to make an activation with targets on the board, I had three formations broken or killed to the tune of about 1100 points. - Add a few unlucky rolls, and I ended up down another couple formations. At this point it became a game of damage control. -Despite this, by using terrain and spreading the board, the game did manage to pull to a Turn 4, 2-0 loss. I think this speaks to how the list plays after the drop. If the alpha strike can be mitigated, the smaller Raven Guard formations can be bullied around a bit with careful positioning and properly timed attacks. - A few additional factors. The board edge I set up on was "divided" into three sections by rivers with distant bridges. This made it nearly impossible for the flanks to support the center after the pods dropped in. Also, armies with more AA would be in better shape. There were 5 flying formations that essentially had free range on the board aside from the 45cm range on the Dominatrix. Finally, my list didn't have any "scout" units. Those would be extremely helpful in dictating where the pods come down if deployed properly. -In summation, its an aggressive list that hits like the blazes right out the gate. But if that punch can be mitigated at all, the rest of the game can be managed with smart play and average dice. |

Ya, I agree with that. Mobility is also pretty limited unless the THawks or Storm Eagles to make it in. All of these have seen me make one big guess for the drop: do I drop on objectives and hope you deploy around them, or do I drop in a safer location and make my way there. |
