As snow loomed I braved the elements to head, once again, to the legendary basement of Coach. Apologies for the pictures, I forgot my memory card and had to fallback to my tablet.

A very close fought game, it came down to the last activations of turn 4. Knights had BTS and DTF, Chaos had the same until the TBolts broke the retinue on their Blitz to deny them DTF.

We both thought it would be over pretty quick after turn 1 rallies and turn 2 SR going to the Knights, but Chaos rallied and Knights started to fail and or drop. I tried to cram as many Knight activations as I could into the 5k. In the end, the fragility of the 3 strong formations wasn't doing me any favors late in the game. I had a pretty big activation advantage over the Chaos (20:15+1) but it was at the expense of formation durability. That, in the end, is what made it a close game I think. If we had gone to points it would have likely been about 2362.5 to 2470, Knights, (that's assuming everything rallied).

Interesting that you pointed out the performance of 3 vs 4 units strong formations. I've been wondering about the same when looking at the Knights. Any other reflections/thoughts on that subject. What about combining 3 and 4 unit strong formations in an army? Would different knight variants be better suited for 3 unit stron formations?

And thanks for yet another inspiring report!

Our first couple of games last year we each used 3 strong formations. After a few crossfires 4 strong became the norm in our group, as a single loss in a crossfire didn't mean breaking. You can still get a average number of activations at 4 strong (I manage 9 with no levy) but it leaves you with very few stalling options and a real need to keep that number up throughout the game.

Now I usually stall with the Paladins (double into a good hiding position, take a few shots if I can), move up the Custodians as better targets become available, and then finish up with the Lancers and Errants so they can get into good assault positions.

Custodians do fine in 3 strong formations in my opinion. The better armor keeps them safe, as does their longer range/slower speed (as they're less likely to be up front and subject to crossfire). The other Knights I'd much rather have the DC to make breaking them harder than more activations.

hey guys this is the coach and yes I get to loose games to Dave often. my thoughts on the game is that it was a fair fight that swung back and forth with every turn. several key factors in the game were failed activations on both sides and failing to rally formations on my end. I had a low activation count list of which 25 % never participated in the game. One retinue got cleaned out after planetfall. defilers , predators and the feral got shot once each and stayed broken all game. my supreme commander retinue made on move got shot and never recovered. All in all I had about 1300 points of troops that did nothing. The starts of the game for me were my one aircraft formation which dave did not use his airforce to shoot down. This lone formation did damage every turn and took out his baron formation to get BTS in turn three.
