Note-report from a vassal game with MikeT. Mike gave me my first experience of facing a tyranid army, which broadly consisted of almost my entire force getting eaten by the end of t4 :sos

(Not many pictures for T1, it's mostly doubling and marching everything up to the middle to form a mega-blob for start t2)
BL> spaceship activates, barrage hits two assault swarms, one losses 2 gaunt, other both warriors, pin-point misses a harridan.
BL> chosen pod in and get 1 kill on the warrior-less formation in firefight, then lose the assault and break, reduced to 1 chosen and the dreadnaught
Nids> double brood to middle of map, shoot chosen for 1 BM
Nids> stealers engage chosen, chosen OW, 2 stealers die from OW. first strike kills both rhinos, chosen kill 3. chosen win by 4, wiping the nids.
BL> hellblades GA harridans, killing 3 gargoyles for 1BM
Nids> assault swarm fails to activate, moves up 1
BL> BTS formation flips overwatch
Nids> assault formation fails to activate, moves up 1

Turn 2 BL hold off on teleporting and both trygon formations pop up behind the BL side of the blob, 0BM, BL initiative

situation after the BL shooting:

Nids> trygon engages middle chosen, destroying the formation and putting 1BM on a retinue within 15cm
Nids> trygon engages the retinue with the BM, slithering round the side to avoid support fire, 1 ravener dies but the nids win by 4, breaking the retinue.
BL> preds single backwards and kill 2 gaunts in the formation without warriors, breaking them
BL> retinue summons demons and sustains, placing 1BM on a trygon
Nids> assault retinue engages chosen, 2 gaunts die but the chosen are wiped out by support fire

BL> terminators summon up 5 demons and combine engage 2 assault swarms, BL win by 2 for the loss of a terminator and demon
BL> BTS flips OW to summon demons
nids> harridan BM warhound
nids>trygon engages warhound, rending it apart with macros
BL> hellblades strafe 3 gaunts from the nid BTS, it's now solid nid activations to eat everything up
nids> assault swarm doubles into support range to BM BTS
nids> BTS double into support range to BM BTS in crossfire
nids> assault swarm doubles into support range to BM BTS in corssfire (this is pretty much exactly what happened vs Dave's orks, but with bugs …)
nids> engage with assault swarm, 6 gaunts die in OW, the rest to chaos FF.
nids> trygon engages. BL counter-charge to pull more formations, casualties on both sides and BL lose the assault by 2

game called at this point (forgot to remove OW counter on BL bts, they should be broken, not OW):

Having eaten the BL army down to 11 (non-demon) stands the all-in attack on the BTS/blitz combo left the nids without formations to contest other objectives and unable to get on to/take either blitz: 0–0 objectives but massive points win to the tyranids (didn't bother to count!).

Bit of an odd ending! (Mike did have some pretty bad luck on activation rolls as well)

thoughts
Not having faced nids before, it was difficult to know how aggressively to play towards them. Really wish i'd sent the decimator in t3 to MW IC barrage the nid BTS in the factory, I was trying to break the trygon before it could assault me instead, but there was a small chance of that working to start with. Garrisoned 40cm charge stealers on the mid line give you plenty to think about!

I'd expected the tyranids to be pretty special rules intensive, but they worked very smoothly with simple mechanics that still gave a feeling of a relentless living tide of assault.
