CaptPiett wanted to try out the Ordinatus as there was clamor about it being "must have". Not sure I agree with that, it took out six units total for the game (one more than the stupid swamp...) and he spent a considerable chunk of points protecting it (Oblits and a retinue) against my air assault. Diverting the Oblits to bubble it left me free to pick off things on his right flank. Dice swung pretty evenly I thought. I failed 5 dangerous terrain tests but managed to kill the Chosen on 7s and make my Warhound saves. |

Yeah, I've seen powerful BP weapons fail to do much of anything at times. Fighting 4+ saving, KNF Marines doesn't help the Ordinatus either. A test against Tyranids, I.G. or another low armor save list, should yield better results for the Ordinatus. Dave, just remember that the swamp you were moving through was a Warhammer 40k death world swamp - full of poisons, monsters, carnivorous plant life that bleeds (of course), gore, bones, blood, skulls with smaller skulls in their mouths and eye sockets ![]() |

That's where all the Epic 40k stuff must have been sent in the early 2000s... |

Great looking report, love the marines, Subjugators? Interesting that both warhounds survived the battle, singles usually die pretty quickly in our games. Was the ordinatus just unlucky in its to hit rolls? the SM forces look fairly close together at times, suggesting it could have caused a number of hits & BM? |

The warhounds made some pretty good saves. If Dave had rolled more on the mortal/average level, one would've died I think. Or at least have broken. Dave deployed as spread out as he could. I note in the IW thread that a lot of my templates hit empty ground. I caused an average number of hits per barrage, and he saved an average amount of them (IIRC). Between that and the limited number of SM units, there were just not that many hits. Overall this battle told me (usual caveats about this being only one game of course) that there's two ways to counter the ordinatus: 1) kill it, which I committed a significant portion of my force in preventing; and 2) deploying to minimize its effects. The latter is especially possible for SM, with their smaller FMs and good armor saves. Much less so for horde armies. |

Ya, I made 3 saves on the Warhound (one fail would have broke it) and it then went on to marshal, bring up all its shields, shedding all BMs and took out an Oblit to boot. That bit of luck compensated for the mass graveyard the swamp became for my Subjugators. On the Warhound surviving, I try not to expose them to fire or at least get them with some kind of obstruction between them and the enemy. The Vindicators advancing on it could have gone worse for me, and the Obliterates got lucky with three hits, I just got lucky as well. Agreed on the Ordinatus, in this case I think the amount of points that went towards protecting it hampered what the rest of the army could do. I thought its hit rolls were average as well, I just attempted to minimize what it could roll with the exception of the air assault forces. |

If the hound on the right was targeted the second and third templates would have likely been able to get the other hound with 1 die roll and one marine. That was actually my biggest fear once I realized the Ordinatus was Disrupt (thought it was IC). Had CP placed templates like that I would have likely asked to redeploy the right hound to make it a better playtest. He didn't so I didn't bring it up. |

Point taken - I generally avoid targeting WE with barrage because of the poor chances of getting a hit, but the potential of breaking both hounds with a single disrupt barrage should've occurred to me. During a regular game (had I considered it), it would've been with some glee that I'd place those templates over 3 FMs. As it turns out, I was focused on attrition of his BTS and prepping it for a later engagement. That said, during playtests our group assumes perfect information about opposing capabilities. A player knowing about that potential to break the hounds would have deployed differently and negated that potential. The philosophy behind that is "gotcha" moments or obvious mistakes are functions of the players, not the lists, and therefore should not be part of the results of playtesting. So, I would've agreed that Dave redeploy the titans accordingly. |
