Great report. I agree with your points about the Baal predators as well. I've been thinking of performing a combination with land speeders with them. Thinking that could be a devastating 1-2 punch |

Yeah, I was very pleasantly surprised by them. I really only took them as a fluff option and because I had models for them. I didn't expect them to do much. But they tore into that Great Company and then blasted across the table to take the Blitz. MVP of the game, for sure. The points seem just right. At 300 points, I don't think I would spam them, but a formation of them seems like a must-have for nearly every game. |

Did the SW Great Company have its infantry touching vehicles for cover when the Baals rolled them or was it just bad saves that cost him? |

Good report ![]() Dobbsy wrote: Did the SW Great Company have its infantry touching vehicles for cover when the Baals rolled them or was it just bad saves that cost him? Yeah, that's good practice for any infantry with AV transports in Epic. Having them touching the vehicles means the infantry can use them as cover and get a -1 to hit plus the vehicle doesn't loose movement having to scoot around a little bit to pick them up (in epic the vehicle moves to pick up an infantry stand by touching it not the other way round). Baal's have ignore cover on their heavy flamers, so they would ignore this -1 though. The Epic cover rules are deliberately generous and with area terrain like woods infantry only need to be touching the cover to claim the -1 and cover save. If you want to move the formation during the game it's better to have the infantry touching or partially in the cover, but not fully inside. If the infantry are fully inside (such as they look to be in this photo) their vehicles would have to take a dangerous test to enter it to touch them and pick them up (don't need to test if the infantry are only partially in as the vehicle can touch them in the open). Just mentioning to help for future games. |

Yes, a couple stands of Space Wolves were hugging their vehicles, but it didn't matter to the Heavy Flamers on the Baal. Admittedly, I got a lucky roll - seven out of eight heavy flamer shots hit, forcing a lot of saves. It did help that I only needed to advance to get in range. But yes, this was a pivotal attack. It killed his Supreme Commander. Perhaps that was another mistake on the Space Wolf player's part? I don't generally play so aggressively with the unit my SC is in. Instead I prefer to have it camp an objective, preferably in cover. You are right - the BA list does not have much in the way of AT. My next league game is up against Steel Legion, so this will be a concern! Still trying to figure out how to deal with all that armor. Thinking I am just going to need to assault the hell out of him. |

Sounds like a perfect time to Air Assault |

You mean against Steel Legion? I am considering a Thunderhawk assault list... or, I am also thinking maybe a planetfalling Stormraven list... The Steel Legion player (esadous on this forum) takes Hydra batteries, which make me very nervous to field a lot of Thunderhawks. What do you think? |

Does he add them to formations or have them as stand alone? If the former, Scouts can remove Hydras from a formation due to Infiltrator.... You'll lose the scouts but your air assault comes in clean. |

A formation of Stormravens or Scouts with Stormravens could be used to alpha strike a formation of Hydras before air assaulting (assuming you can get LOS to them). Or hit them with Terminators. They're quite vulnerable as a formation of 3 as you kill one and they break, most people tend to use them as upgrades instead. |

Glad to see the Baal Predators doing well. This type of SM tank is often hard to use, but at the right time and place they can be devastating. I often use a vindicator and redeemer formation in the salamanders list and up close they are deadly with some 8x AP3+ IC shots and then two assault cannons. My biggest problem is their slow speed but i imagine that's less of an issue for the BA. Do you think you'll need more AA for future games, I find two hunters to be insufficient at keeping out enemy fliers. Cheers for the write up. |
