I managed to do twp battle reports today (one still needs to be written down etc.). Main intention behind was not entertainment, but testing the current Thurgrimms Stronghold list 1.5.
I have to admit, that the list seems to be extremely unbalanced. We have had a single game without restrictions, the second one was without war engines, just to see if they are unbalanced, or the whole list. Details on my blog.
Even though it was for list testing purposes only you can hopefully enjoy it at least a little bit ^^

Nice report ta. Look forward to seeing the next one. I hope to have another Squat army in the future, maybe their power issues will be ironed out by then.

They really have some balancing issues. My mate was really worried about that. With war engines, they are overkill, without simply awkwardly weak. Hopefully I can convince him to fight at least one smaller game per month against the squats to figure out what kind of changes could be useful to guarantee an equal and/or challenging gameplay.

A couple of quick questions.

Were the Overlords together as a single formation or separate?

And, were the Marines able to push forward to get some cover? I ask this as the games which I play we ensure that the terrain is even spaced across the board including in the deployment zone. This gives formations such as Whirlwinds a place to hide in the shadow of the terrain or in it if they wish.

Looking at your list you seem to be low on points, I make your list 1775 pts.

Finally, I'd say that the Marine player probably went a bit light in activations, I would have dropped the most of the upgrades and added a formation of Land Raiders or two Land Speeder formations. The alternative is to add Warhounds, which did nasty things to my Overlords in my last Squat game.

Looking at the second game I can see that you have your terrain bunched along the centre line of the table. I can see this as being unbalanced versus the Overlords and MW Barrage Spotter attacks. Plus the Overlords just need to double forward to see the Marines and fire on them.

If either of you have Guard, might I suggest trying the same first list against a couple of shadowswords and artillery as a different test.

The Overlords were together in one formation. The Marines used cover as far as they could. The lists were 2000 points each. Did you use traitor-legion for creating the list or the current Thurgrimm-list 1.5? For the Warhounds... well he never uses Titans - owns a lot, but never uses them. I would say he dislikes war engines in general. Never the less Squat lists strongly base on solid war engine formations. As long as you know, you are fighting against Squats, there can be multiple anti-WE formations used. But: The aim should be to make the list ready for tournaments. For now I see too many problems based on Squat war engines.

I haven't used Thurgrimm 1.5 yet. But my thoughts on Squats are slightly different: infantry is very weak for the points, and support and artillery too good (Thudds and Mortars damn good, and Goliaths just broken at just 150 a piece).

I haven't used WEs though.

Ah well, the first 15 seconds of this shows what happened in my last game to my Overlords. I had gone WE heavy, but I had too few activations and failed to do enough damage against Console Avenging Angel's Marines and Warhounds initially. You'll also see how we have our terrain as well.

Thanks for the batreps! I do find it mildly amusing that your experience with the Overlords and spotter rules/MW shots are opposite of some of the more recent comments from players. Overlords are deemed too expensive by some, and most players (myself included) tend to have a difficult time getting the spotter rule to play into their games. Perhaps your experiences are an indicator of balance rather than imbalance? Just a thought.

I have played with Squats just three times in total yet, so it´s rather a snap shot out of a wide range of experiences that might have occurred during the games. Additionally I have to admit that I have never been a big fan of MW-artillery, especially if fired indirect. In the end though it´s just my personal taste and others might see things a bit different.
