Turn 2, I forgot to take photos of the first two marine activations. The THawk Tacticals engage the Swarm on the bugs left flank. They break it but loose 3 of their own.

We called it when the nids ran out of activations. The Marines could grab T&H with the SC, and already had Blitz, DTF and BTS.

Unfortunately not too much testing of the 'dule, as he failed to rally turn 2. He didn't get a shot off turn 1 either.

This game sucked balls. I was ready to pack it in at the end of turn 2 but reconsidered when I still had some FMs to deny TSNP. My strong flank was dismantled by Dave's weak flank plus Thawk assault. I know you mentioned that the exocrine/lictors activations might have been best saved for later, but looking at the pics I think the bigger points value FMs were broken or facing sm FMs that had already activated. All that advancing in a wave of bugs seemed to have accomplished was putting everything in range of a series of serendipitous sm assaults.

It seems like most engagements happened on the SM terms, and almost all were firefights. Were the angles of the SM engagements and/or space between bug formations such that they could not lend much support to each other?

Also, was the result of the lictor assault just due to bad rolling?

Did the marines just avoid the Dom?

The bugs were close and in cover, but ya I tried to engage them without having to worry about support. Having a THawk made that easy.

On average the Lictors should have killed 1.8 units, so only one was low but not too outside what's expected.

I gave the Dom a wide berth with the exception of the fearless Warhound, ya.

I played my Epic Tyranids for the first time last week, just painted, not an idea what to expect.

I had some older rules but found the 10.2 version, this seemed more balanced/streamlined and i used the armylist from this battle report because i needed to field 3k too.
(the exception was the titan, i have not painted the titans yet)
I faced 3k existing of 1,5k marines and 1,5 IG.
And i must say we all liked it and it all seemed balanced.
The Tyranids won because no-one expected the assault force to be so battle deciding.
Next time my opponents will probably try keep some distance.

Tyranids really are different with their own strengths and weaknesses.
The weakness is obviously the lack of firepower.
The strength it's assault force, allthough you often start with (more) blast markers so you have to make up for it by winning and with superior numbers.

One quiestion to the veterans here: is it true that tyranids DO get a blast marker from being shot at and by casualties of non-expendable bases/models? That is how we played it and it worked well.

In any case: thanks for the armylist and the battle report, it helped us to have a good 1st battle with Tyranids.

They're homemade. I used Kaplow poker chips, a 1/2" hole punch and a 8.5x11" sticky backed label to make them.
