Slightly bigger rematch and aircraft.

Steel Legion (Tournament pack 2013) - 3000

Reg HQ + Hydra (commissar) (550)
Mech Inf + Hellhounds (commissar) (525)

Inf Company + Fire support (commissar) (350)

Based on 2000 point list. This time will try and stick to the plan. Inf co garrison on one flank. Tanks and mech inf deploy on other flank and try to roll over whatever is there. Bombards deploy in middle and support where needed. Sentinels act as screen.

Iron Warriors (1.0a) - 3000

Based on discussions in the dev thread played with the following changes:-
Emplacements at 3 for 25 points
Stalker 50 points with 2 shots.

In both cases will try to note what would have happened without those changes.

Chosen try to hold flank. IW formations push towards blitz through one objective with SC nearest table edge. Vindicators as a reserve.
I'm not convinced by the list. I suspect I'm too light on activations. I also suspect I've got too much artillery.
Finding Chaos lists hard to build as I keep on adding things to formations.

Objectives
Blitz - IW slightly off centre behind building, SL on right flank behind cover
Objectives - IW and SL both spread objectives out.

IW plan to hold buildings on left and push towards SL blitz
SL plan to hold outpost on right, deploy centrally and move up behind hills to engage IW.

Garrisons
IW chosen deploy in buildings on left.
SL Inf co deploys in terrain on right.

Normal deployment
IW basilisks deploy defensively. Deploy heavy on right to push towards blitz
SL deploy more evenly

IW win initative. Basilisks on left shell tanks + bombards. 1LR, 1 hellhound and 1 bombard killed breaking the bombards
IW retain. Basilisks on right shell reg HQ killing 1 chimera and 2 infantry
SL double sentinels on left. Don't put thunderbolts on CAP at the moment as need to deal with hellblades to allow thunderbolts free reign (can't cap intercept missions).
IW IW on far right double round woods over hill into range of one end of the garrisoned inf co. SL don't overwatch (would only get 6 shots). IW place a blast marker on inf co with AT fire.
SL sentinels on right double forwards and place a blast marker on IW
IW IW in middle double forwards into range of end of inf co. SL again don't overwatch. IW place blast marker.
SL tank company doubles over hill into range of half of chosen who overwatch placing a blast marker. Tank return fire and place a BM(14 shots no hits!)
IW Place hellblades on CAP (should have done this earlier)
SL double mech co behind hill (waiting for last IW stalker to move so can plan thunderbolt moves)
IW vindicators double into woodland in preperartion for next turn. SL inf co overwatch at them (slightly more in range and easier to kill than LR). Place 1BM
SL SC advances to right flank spreading out.
IW SC advances behind hill and disembark
SL thunderbolt A ground attack chosen from within aa umbrella of hydra in tank co. Helltalons intercept from CAP. Due to position of thunderbolts and their start position end up attacking thunderbolts head on.
SL flak at hellblades, killing one (no jink), remaining hellblades fire at thunderbolts who jink placing a blast marker
SL thunderbolt B intercept hellblades killing 1.

Disengage moves
Thunderbolt A (ground attack) takes the safe option and flies off the left table edge picking up another blast marker rather than trying to fly through hydras
Thunderbolt B (intercept) flies off SL table edge.
Hellblade flies off IW table edge

Rallying
IW all formations rally removing all blast markers
SL tank co rallies (using sc reroll) removing 3 bm, bombards fail, inf co rallies removing 2 bm, sc rallies removing 3 bm

IW win iniative. Basilisk on left outside of AA umbrella sustain at mech inf co, killing 1 chimera and 2 infantry
IW retain (using sc reroll) with other basilisk who sustain barrage tank co killing one LR
SL mech co advances over hill, disembarks and fires at IW SC (inf), 8 hits, 3 kills. Leaves mech inf exposed however depending on IW reaction either seperates IW left flank from support or weakens push on SL blitz (was thinking about an enage here but didn't like the numbers after the IW bombardment)
SL inf co retains and sustains at vindicators, killing 2! (plan here was to cripple IW IC shooting)
IW SC marshalls, firing at mech co (placing a bm) and removing all bm
SL tank doubles towards blitz firing at chosen, killing 2 inf
SL left sentinels double towards chosen firing at them breaking them (plan here was to stop chosen moving forwards setting up crossfire on tank co)
IW central IW formation engages mech co (wanted to get rid of them quickly and make use of blast markers).
IW attacks 2 at 6, 2 at 3, 10 at 4, 6 hits, kill 4 inf, 1chim (plus support fire),
SL attacks 3 at 6, 14 at 5, 3 at 3, 8 hits, kill 4 inf (including lord)
IW support fire 5 at 4, 5 at 6, 5 hits, kill 2 inf,2 chim
resolution IW 5+2(bm factors)+5 , SL 6+2(numbers plus inspiring)+4 Draw!
2nd round
IW attacks 2 at 3 , 4 at 4, 2 at 6, 3 hits, killing 1 inf, 1 chim, 1hellhound
SL attacks 3 at 3, 7 at 5, 4 hits, killing 2 marines and 1 LR
IW support fire 5 at 4, 5 at 6, 2 hits! kill 1 inf
resolution IW 3+2(bm factors)+3, SL 2+2(numbers + insp)+3. IW win by 1 killing another infantry unit.

I suspect this bloody stalemate is the turning point for the game.
SL Thunderbolt A (0bm) ground attack broken IW. They thread needle between unbroken stalkers flying over vindicators. Kill both remaining inf. BM's on broken formation kill LR, stalker and rhino
IW hellblades attempt to intercept but fail and stand down.
SL Thunderbolts B (2bm) attempt to ground attack left basilisk but fail and stand down.
IW vindicators advance diagonnally towards right sentinels and fire at them killing 2 and breaking them clearing a path for the IW formation to push forward.
SL Sc marshalls, moving backwards
IW IW on right advance towards inf co, firing at them. 1 hit, which is saved!

Disengage moves
Thunderbolts arc around IW SC formation staying out of range and leave via SL board edge

Rallies
IW chosen fail, IW rally, vind rally
SL All formation pass except right flank sentinels

SL win intiative! (key roll here)
SL tank advance towards IW blitz objective firing at basilisks. 4 hits (would have been 9 without emplacements), kill 2 and break the survivor claiming the IW blitz
SL Thunderbolt A retain and ground attack remaining basilisk. Approach by flying over left flank then down baseline. No hits (would have been 2 without emplacements) placing a blast marker. Wanted to reduce effectiveness of battery. Even placing a blast marker adds chance order will fail and drops barrage to 2 BP
IW vind sustain at inf co, 5 shots, 5 hits, 5 kills (this was possibly a mistake, should have shot at tank co with SC?)
IW retain with basilisks shellinh tank co, killing 1 hellhound, 1 LR. (Trying to layout prep for SC to attempt to break them).
SL mech co marshalls moving back towards SL objective on left
SL bombards retain (under instruction from sc) and shell IW SC, killing 1 marine and stalker (preventing a meaningful salvo at the tank co)
IW hellblade goes on cap
IW IW on right retain and engage inf co
IW attacks 2 at 3, 10 at 4, 2 at 6, 7 hits, 7 kills (inlcuidng commander and commissar)
SL attackes 1 at 6, 9 at 5, 1 at 3, 4 hits, 2 kills (including lord)
resolution IW 5 + 4(bm, numbers) + 7, SL 5 + 0 + 2 IW win by 9 wiping out inf co
Consolidation IW embark in transports and move towards objective picking up 2 bms.

SL sentinels on left advance onto objective (no failed tests) firing at chosen, no hits but 1 kill through bm
IW lone land raider doubles back towards blitz firing at tank co (bit gamey here, trying to extend game to turn 4), no kills but places blast marker.
SL Thunderbolt B ground attack lone IW LR, hellblade intercepts,
hydra from tank co flak at hellblade, 2 hits and kills
thunderbolts attack LR, 2 hits no kills but breaks formation.
IW SC marshall (bm's prevent friting at tank co and to far to try and engage as dismounted.
SL SC moves back to blitz

Disengagement both thunderbolts disengage sucessfully.

End phase check for victory conditions
IW 0
SL 2 (take & hold, blitzkreig)
Victory to SL!

General Thoughts
Planes are interesting. Interaction with ground flak and planning of attack and disengage paths will take some getting used to.
misplayed IW deployment (needed something more substantial opposite tank co) and turn 3 (activation order wrong)
couple of key points where luck seemed to be against IW. Losing initiaive on turn 3 was bad. Taking heavy casulties on turn 2 assault was also bad.

Thoughts on IW
range 30 on stalker feels quite short compared to 45 on hydra, not sure stalkers fired flak all game, may be that hydra's are good rather than stalkers bad (range 60 on marine hunters looks very nasty!)
emplacements are interesting. Didn't really help basilisk on left who were doomed when attacked by tank co. Did help basilisks on right who would have been hit twice by thunderbolts.
Don't think the list itself caused the loss, just errors in deployment and play.

Happy for any suggestions on where I went wrong playing this game.
