First battlereport, a loss of course :(

I never managed to get control of the battle.
I'm trying out the new Iron Hands list and wanted to see if it could handle an enemy without dropping from the sky, after this I doubt it ;)
The Steel Legion (SL) had 3 different artillery batteries and 1 marauder squadron so he could simply sit and wait for my guys to die. The lack of long range weapons (beyond 45 cm), thunderhawks and teleporting terminators forced me to double and shoot at whatever I could most of the time. Being outnumbered in activations didn't help ether, he setup close to the edge and waited for my units to come into range and then moved forward and shot...

Some reflections:
The Dreadnought Phalanx is very good, next time they will arrive in a pod!
Vultures is terrifying, even after their first shot... (this time I was lucky with the saves but almost all battles they will take out my warhound...
Thunderhawk bomber is crap if you meet an army consistin mostly of tanks
Heavy infantry feels good and balanced. The mix makes them less single pointed.
Comissars is really good, need snipers ;)
I took a mixed clan thad didn't quite live up to the expectations. There were always some units that couldn't fire because of range or AP. The clan with only Marines faired better. The big number makes them very resilent!
I had luck with my saves but not when hitting. My opponent managed to fail activation on the most precious units several times or else it would have ended earlier.

TURN 1
SL wins Initiative
SL: Vulture Advance (pop-up) on one Warhound, 8 hellstrikes hit but the Warhound manages to save 5. = 1 wound, 0 shields, 2 BM
SL: Retains: Artillery shoots at the Whirlwinds 3 hits= 1 WW and 1 Hunter gone, 3 BM
IH: Thunderhawk Bomber Ground assault Stormtroupers in some Valkyries. 1 hit= 1 valk down. Both inf saves, 2 BM
SL: Tank Company advance on the devestators in cover killing 2
IH: Devastators advances and retaliate killing 1 Leman Russ
SL: Stormtroopers tak a hold action and regroups = 0 BM
IH: Clan2 double against the Inf Company on overwatch. The imperial guards shoots in vain and the marines shoots back only killing one…
SL: Artillery shoots at Clan2 = all hits gets saved
IH: Clan1 doubles against the tank company = 0 killed
SL: Artillery shoots at the Clan1 = 3 Razor + 1 SM killed
IH: Whirlwinds takes a hold action moving forward
SL: Fighters attack Clan1 = 0 killed
IH: Assault squad march against the woods
SL: Marauder bomber attacks the damaged warhound and breaks it.
IH: Devastators double agains the Infantry company = 0 kills
SL: Fighters attack Clan1 = 1 Rhino and one SM killed
IH: Vindicators double against the Infantry Company 1 dead…
SL: Mech Company advances against Clan2 = 0 killed
IH: Dreadnoughts advance on Super heavies = 0 killed
SL: Super heavies takes a hold action shoots back at the dreads = 0 killed
IH: Warhound doubles against some artillery killing one and breaking it
SL: Warhound advances against Clan1 = 2 killed (Razor and SM)
SL: Warhound sustains at Warhound knocking out all shields and 1 wound breaking it.

End of turn 1 (Warhound, oneArtillery and the Inf Company fails to rally fr the SL IH hunter shoots down one marauder)

TURN 2
IH wins initiative
IH: Clan2 (supported by the vindicators) assaults Mech company and intermingles the Inf company. Round one 6 space marines dead vs 8 imp guards = draw, second round the marines kills 4 more and the SL only manages to kill 2 = win for the marines. Inf company broken but almost unhurt. Both Mech company and Clan2 is broken.
IH: Retains: Devastators sustains at tank company killing 1
SL: Vultures sustains at Assault company in forest killing 2
SL: Retains: Artillery takes a hold action shooting at the Vindicators = 0 killed
IH: Whirlwind shoots at Super heavies and Vultures causing 1 wound on one baneblade
SL: Super heavi advances on the Dreads = 0 killed
IH: Clan advances on tank company killing 1
SL: Stormtroopers takes a hold action moving forward
IH: Warhound sustains on the Stormtroopers killing 2 valkyres and 2 troopers
SL: Tank company takes a hold action shooting Clan = 1 Landraider and 1 vet officer killed
IH: Assault marines takes a marshall action
SL: Artillery shoots devastators = 1 SM killed
IH: Dreads advances on Super heavy = 1 wound
SL: Fighters shoots the Warhound = 0 wounds
IH: Thunderhawk stands down (had BM)
SL: Fighter shoots Warhound breaking it but nothing more
IH: Devastators doubles against Artillery killing 1
SL: Marauder bomber hits Warhound 3 hits destroying it?
IH: Vindicator doubles against broken Mech Inf = 4 killed
SL: Warhound advance against Devastators = 1 kill
SL: Warhound double against Assault marines in cover = 0 killed

End of turn 2 (Vultures and one artillery fails to rally and the Inf company, Mech Company and one artillery stays broken) Hunter places one BM on both fighter formations

TURN 3
IH wins initiative
IH: Warhound advances against another warhound blasting away all shields
IH: retains: Clan 2 makes a hold action shoots at warhound in crossfire = 1 wound and breaking it
SL: Stormtroopers shoots Clan1 = killing 1 vet officer (the last one…)
SL: retains: Artillery shoots Vindicator = 0 kills
IH: Clan1 doubles against stormtroopers = 0 kills…
SL: Tank company advances against the Vindicators and kills them all…
IH: Clan2 advances against vultures killing 1 and breaking it
SL: Artillery shoots at devastators killing 3 SM and 1 rhino…
IH: Whirlwind shoots broken Vultures and Warhound = 2 Vultures killed (1 left…)
SL: Super heavies takes a hold action against Clan2 = 1 SM and 1 Rhino dead breaking it
IH: Dreadnoughts advance on Warhound knocking down its shields
SL: Fighters stand down
IH: Thunderhawk attacks Warhound, breaking it but nothing more…

End of turn 3 (Both SL warhounds fails to rally and stays broken, Tank comp, Stormtrooper and Inf Company also fails but is not broken. AA fire from hydra, Marauder and fighters does not bother the Thunderhawk

TURN 4
IH wins initiative
IH: Warhound advances at Tank company = 1 kill
SL: Tank company advances against devastators kills 2 and destroys it
SL: retains: Artillery shoots Clan1 and devastators killing 1 dev
IH: Dreadnoughts advances on a lone Vulture killing it
IH: retains: Clan2 advance on stormtroopers killing 1 and breaking it
SL: Artillery shoots Clan2 and devastators without effect
IH: thunderhawk stands down…
SL: Fighters attack Clan killing 1 SM
IH: Devastators attack Mech company but fails to kill the last vehicle, breaking it
SL: Super heavy advances on the Clan1 killing 1 SM breaking it
IH: Whirlwing shoots artillery killing 1 and breaking it
SL: Fighters attack Clan1 Hitting 3 and thus destroying it. (BTS)
IH: Assault squad takes an hold action and breaks…nice ending

End of turn 4. SL has Defend the flag and BTS, IH has none shall pass…
Victory for the Steel Legion!!! 2 - 1.
If not for some unlucky activations it could have been a greater victory for the SL...

Great report! A few questions:

-Dred Phalanx, 4, 5 or 6? How'd she feel price wise? Worth the points?
-THawk bomber over the Indictor. Why that choice out of curiosity?
-Assault marines, less of a thrill ground pounding it in this list. Resilient enough you feel?

PS Steel Legion has been the opponent of choice for the early dev work on this list. Glad to see others find them an interesting match-up too :D

Thanks for your report.

Interesting terrain you have wider spaces than I play with. From other testing I'd agree with your thoughts on Dreadnought formations and Vultures.

PS Steel Legion has been the opponent of choice for the early dev work on this list. Glad to see others find them an interesting match-up too :D


4 dread and one venerable. They feel very good and worth their points. They don't hit hard when shooting and is slow but they can take a lot of hits with their leman russ armour :) My opponent feared them and avoided my attempts to assault :) In a drop pod they will be lethal, better than terminators and cheaper... I own 6 models but only 5 is painted so that is what limited my numbers...

The bomber seemed better against all his infantry but he played his Hydras and fighters well so I ended up attacking tanks most of the time...

Assault marines didn't do much in this game but I used them as a cheap activation that would try and draw some fire and threaten the artillery, in that they succeeded.

we usually play at a friend of mine and he has lots of terrain but today I had to improvise and search the garden ;D
