So Consul Avenging Angel and myself got another game with the Iron Warriors having another go at the Squats. They must have something that they want or the such like. Continuing my initial assesment of the army I swopped to the following list:-

Berzerkers + Rhinos
Berzerkers + Rhinos
Warrior Brotherhood + Rhinos
Warrior Brotherhood + Grand Warlord & Rhinos
Thunderfire Battery
Thunderfire Battery
Iron Eagle Squadron + Iron Hawk
Iron Eagle Squadron + Iron Hawk
Guild Outriders
Colossus

I faced off against (from memory)

Retinue + Rhinos & SC
Defilers
Defilers

Decimators x2
Dreadnaughts
Dreadnaughts
Land Raiders
Hellblades

I was a little bit sneaky and didn't remind CAA that each Colossus had four 2BP one-shot missiles and when the Squats got their first activations each Colossus got to fire all of it's missiles to hit a formation and spread templates on to two other formations. This spread lots of BM and also broke two formations of Defiles which helped.

There was little forward movement from the Squats as they stayed under the AA umbrella as much as possible over the first two turns.

I lost two formations (Berserkers and Bikes) attempting to take on a formation of Dreadnaughts even though in each case they had a Colossus supporting them. CAA lost two formations of Defilers engaging the Colossus himself.

As CAA pushed forward I was able to break one flank and push one Warrior formation across the table in their Rhinos. This proved to be critical as pushing forward a formation of Gyrocopters allowed me to break the only other formation which could protect the Blitz and the Warriors were able to spread out and take Blitz and TnH for a 2-0 win in turn 3.

The limited MW shooting in the list that I took was the one drawback that I felt that I had as I had great problems facing the 3+ save from the Dreadnaughts. CAA and I discussed the game afterwards and I'm sure he'll post some thoughts soon. But I felt that once the Land Raiders were neutralised I was happy that the Colossus were safe and he should have used the Defielrs against the Thunderfires to put pressure on my Blitz.

The rhino mounted Beserkers weren't used as more than speed bumps to protect the Colossus and I tried to protect the Gyrocopters as much as possible as they represented my fastest units once the Bikers were killed.

Even though I had two formations which could utilise and two which coud generate the position to use the Spotter rule I didn't get there so can't comment on it as yet.

Whilst I didn't use them that much in this game I am feeling that the Beserker and Warrior formations are going to be constantly mounted up in my lists as I enjoy the movement options.

The Colossus were good, but at 450pts I'm not sure how much I'll use them as the Overlord feels a better option. However testing will continue.

Did anything feel underpowered or overpowered?

Any comments on the Iron Warriors list?
It's good to see it being played.

On the Squats I haven't used the Spotter rule as yet (but this was the first game that it was available for me) and so can't comment on that. Stubborn was very useful as the additional +1 to rallying was very much needed. I haven't suffered from the lack of a double move when broken, (or even only 15cm) as in most cases I haven't faced a concerted follow up. I haven't found anything that is so overpowered as to make it a must have unit as yet. The Overlords are close, but as I've said before Shadowswords et al are going to eat them for breakfast.

I still want to have a go with the other units before jumping in with comments too soon, but will suggest that the Cyclops missiles are changed to AT (2+) 90cm, One-shot. This will mean that they are direct fire and the same range as the main gun so that they are designed to knock down WE shields before the Hellfury Cannon destroys them.

With regard to the Iron Warriors I find them an interesting list. I was tryiing to get CAA to go with an extreme list of:-

5x Defiler formations
4x Dreadnought formations
1x Obliterator formation
1x Hellblade formation
1x Helltalon formation

But he has been a bit more restrained than me so far. Whilst they haven't won as yet I slightly concerned about the costing of the Havoc & Land Raider formation as this is a very nice formation and I'm also interested to see how the Ordinatus Chaotica gets on.

However as with most of the variant Chaos lists they suffer from small formation sizes which are relatively easy to break. This has been the main reason for them losing the last two games as I have been able to place enough BM to break formations in turn 3 stopping them from activating and claiming objectives. CAA has been playing the list as an aggressive force it will also be interesting to see how they work as a more defensive orientated list.

Finally, it would be great to get a Dreadnought formation to work. It is something that EUK has looked at with several of its lists, but we haven't managed to balance them. Currently though, (against my mainly non-MW lists) they are rock hard and well worth their points garrisoned up the table on Overwatch and then advancing towards their opponents.
