I played against my friend and fellow forum member Droneslayer. This was his second game and the first one was almost a year ago so we agreed to play a smaller 2000p game with no aircraft or WE. It was also my first battle with Tau so I was happy to play a smaller game to start get a feel for the army, please do point out stuff you think I should have done to better utilize the strength of the Tau army.

I've done a picture compilation of the battle.

Tau win the strategy roll but let the imperials have the initiative.

End phase:
Everone rallies except for the Tau recon formation.

The inf company in the forest used it's overwatch on something. I think it most have been the FW but they didn't kill anything.

Edit: At the end of turn one. I started counting my activations and was confused because I was lacking one and then I realized that I had compleatly forgot to deploy my kroot formation. My opponent graciously let me deploy them on my second turn in one of the building close to my deployment zone.

Turn 2:
Tau win initiative to the rogue riders dismay...

End phase:
All rally except for the tanks and recon.

Turn 3.
Tau gets the initiative again.

Turn 3 ended with us both having one Objective, blitz for me and BTS for Droneslayer, due to closing time of the place we had to stop there.

It was a highly enjoyable game and it was a lot of fun to try my Tau forces. Thanks Droneslayer!

Cheers everyone!

Thanks for the report! Borka, consider using an Orca. The strategic advantages of being able to air land Crisis Suits is significant, especially when combined with garrisoned kroot, teleporting Stealth Suits and quick skimmers. Creating deadly marker lighted crossfires is what makes Tau fire power truly nasty. You need to create opportunities for alpha strikes to blow stuff away rather than to trade fire one formation at a time. Use the long range of HHs and BS Suits with small agile recon formations to effect crossfires across vast ranges of the table top. Let the 75 cm rail gun range work in conjuction with the 35 cm skimmer movement to make it impossible for the enemy to safeguard their flanks. +1 to hit from markerlights and -1 to saves makes a significant difference.

Hammerheads really need to be fixed I think. Stats-wise and fluff-wise they are eminent tank killers in 40K, but go pitter-patter against MBTs in Epic. This feels wrong to me. If IG can have different costs for different variants of the LR, so could the Tau for differently armed HHs. I understand the current Tau list works well overall and there was need just to get it out there, but when it comes up for review again this ought to be discussed once more.

Yeah you should go for it. I've played three games so far with them and I find them to be fun to play. They feel kind of fragile, but they're deadly if you get them in the right place.

yeah they're a nice army to use or face, I had a great game against MikeT's awesome tau, ended in a draw, but those seeker missiles and markerlights are a royal PITA!
