A close battle with the new Marine changes. The Marines won it in the fourth with Blitz, T&H, DTF and possibly TSNP (we didn't see if the Terminators rallied). Chaos was one Hunter shy of BTS. Start of Game (excuse the Destructors, I forgot to deploy them before I took the picture ) Start of Game The Hell Talons decide that four Hunters is four too many. The Tacticals double up into cover, sneaking off a shot on the retinue in the woods. The Hell Blades decide that the Talons had the right idea. The Devastators double up as well. The last unit of Blade call the other aircraft "pusses" and come screaming in, laying a BM on the Tacticals while taking a loss. The SC doubles up. The Chosen double and take out a Rhino. The Bikes march to someplace useless. The Raptors do the same! The Scouts screen the Whirlwinds. The Predators double and take out some Infantry. The Whirlwinds sustain and take out a single tank... The mechanized Retinue double and take out a Tactical. The Predators advance and break the Chaos Preds, taking out two. The SC holds the Blitz. The Land Speeders double to screen the SC and lay a BM on the Chosen. The retinue in the woods advances and take out another two Tacticals (so saves for Dave today). The Vindicators double up and manage to take out an Obliterator. The Predators double as well and take out a Marine. The Scouts double and lay a BM.

Turn 2 Turn 2 The Termatinators teleport in with a BM. The Devastators promptly double away from them and shoot the retinue in the woods. The Predators engage. They manage to kill a single stands and fail all their saves. GO PREDS! The Retinue advances and fires on the Devastators (I made my first save here, a Rhino!) The Predators make short work on the mechanized retinue's Rhinos. The Whirlwinds still can't seem to do much, they kill a stand and break the formally mechanized retinue. The Chaos Preds double and take out one of the loyalists. The Terminators attempt to double, fail and marshal. The Vindicators break the retinue in the woods. The Scouts attempt to double, fail and have to move up to support the Vindicators. The Talons still don't want anything to do with the Hunters. The Land Speeders double and take out a Rhino. The SC sustains and breaks the Chosen. Offended by the other Blades insults, the first unit comes in and lays a BM on the Vindicators, loosing a fighter in the process. The Tacticals attempt to marshal, fail and regroup. The SC engages the Vindicators, all thanks to the Scouts failed move. The Vindicators go down to the endless shame of the Scouts. The other Scouts double and lay a BM on the Terminators. The Blades come in and become the Blade. The Bikes setup and engage move for next turn, laying a BM on the Preds. The Raptors do the same, amid cries of "Copy Cat!".

Turn 3 Turn 3 The loyalist Preds blast the Chaos Preds, breaking them. The Bikes engage the SC. One bike and two Marines go down. The rest are wiped out in the resolution (I was up by 4). The Raptors engage the intermingled Preds and SC. But only manage to hit with the MW (Matt would like to thank Chris for his dice...). Two Raptors and a Pred go down. The Raptors are wiped out in the resolution (another poor roll for Matt). The Terminators take fire from the Whirlwinds who still can't hit much. The Hell Talons finally make their appearance and take out a Devastator Rhino. GO TALONS! The retinue in the woods marshals. The Scouts sustain and lay a BM on the Terminators. The SC takes out a Bike. The Devastators marshal. The Blade takes a lunch break. The SC marches up. The other Blade joins the first. The Land Speeders double and hack down a Pred. The Terminators sustain on the Scouts and take two out. The Scouts advance and lay a BM on the SC. The Tacticals advance and lay a BM on the Terminators.

Turn 4 Turn 4 (with the "Apple for you sir!" teddy bear). In an attempt to clense their shame brought upon by the Vindicators' deaths the Scouts assault the SC. One Scout and two Marines go down... But it goes to a second round! The Scouts stand tall and take down another Marine. The Scouts hack down the rest of the SC and redeem their honor in the eyes of the chapter. The Terminators engage the other scouts (hereafter known as the JV team). The JV Team is wiped out... A Blade lays a BM on the Preds. The SC moves up to screen the Blitz, lay a BM on the retinue in the woods. The Talons decide they gave it their best and go home. The Land Speeders break the Pred and grab a T&H. The other Blade fights on and lay a BM on the SC. The Whirlwinds manage to kill the Terminator lord and Obliterator (they fired Important Unit Sniping Missiles). The retinue in the woods makes a go for BTS and engages the SC. Two marines go down! The Marines pile in for a second round. Three Chaos Marines go down (including the lord) but only the SC lives (thanks to his Invulnerable). The retinue wins, but breaks. The Hunter makes its get-a-way. End of Game I still had the Annihilators and Tacticals at this point which could have grabbed DTF and possibly TSNP is the Terminators I broke couldn't rally.

sounds like a brutal game. I bet Matt was a bit floored by the aircraft oneupmanship followed by the Hunter bait'n'switch. Your terrible dice in the early turns swapped terribleness with Matt's later on, which is when it mattered with the assaults. Any thoughts on the Marine changes. There were certainly a lot of marines on that table plus more hunters than are usually seen. Did Matt have problems dealing with so many relatively tough formations?

The reductions allowed me to field 2 extra hunters or a scout formation. The hunters definitely helped out, and same with the Scouts, but whether they were actually needed or not I'm still waffling over. I've played lists similar to this before and done well enough with them. He also got my BTS so I don't think the formations are super-tough. My Destructors and Vindicators died horribly as well, although that was more due to not being able to save once with them.
