Going to try for a playtest a week. Here's number one through the magic of Skype, a camera and floor big enough to hold a 6x4... Tyranids won in the 4th in points 1562 to 725. It was close fought but with two mistakes. 1) On the Marine right flank early on a broken swarm came under fire and I gave it BMs instead of removing 2 Gaunts. The Swarm didn't achieve much throughout the game though, it mostly got slapped around by the SC and the Bikes. 2) Gargoyles were added a la carte at 25 points per instead of 4 per 100. This definitely gave the 'nids a bigger AA bubble but the Gargoyles didn't get off any AA shots throughout the game, only the Dom did. Space Marines Code: 250 - Bike Chaplain 250 - Devastator 200 - Land Speeder 175 - Scout Sniper 175 - Scout Sniper 425 - Tactical Supreme Commander, Razorback 300 - Tactical 400 - Terminator Chaplain 375 - Whirlwind Hunter 150 - Thunderbolt 150 - Thunderbolt 150 - Thunderbolt 3000/12 Tyranid Code: 475 - Dominatrix
500 - Tyranid Warriors Hormagaunts, Termagants, Assault Spawn, 2 Gargoyles 500 - Tyranid Warriors Hormagaunts, Termagants, Assault Spawn, 2 Gargoyles 325 - Tyranid Warriors Hormagaunts, Termagants, 2 Gargoyles 325 - Tyranid Warriors Hormagaunts, Termagants, 2 Gargoyles 200 - Genestealer Swarm 2 Genestealers 200 - Genestealer Swarm 2 Genestealers 275 - Harridan Swarm 4 Gargoyles 200 - Lictor Swarm 1 Lictor 3000/9 |

Turn 1 Strategy: Marines Start of Game Thunderbolts attack Genestealer 1 The Harridan advances on the Scout 2, and takes one out. The Genestealers retain and engage, loose a stealer to overwatch and another in assault along with two Rhinos. Two more Scouts are hacked-down and the Stealers break. The Whirlwinds sustain on the Harridan, taking out two Gargoyles. Assault Swarm 2 marches to the fortified position. Thunderbolts attack Genestealer 1. Assault Swarm 1 marches forward. The SC doubles and lays a BM on them. The Dominatrix doubles on Scouts 1 and lays a BM. The bikes engage Assault Swarm 1. Three to three in kills. The Bikes win by 4, a take out a broken Genestealer within 15cm. Assault Swarm 3 marches. The Thunderbolts attack Assault Swam and take out a Warrior. Made a mistake here, they should have lost another two gaunts, not taken BMs. The Genestealers fail to march and regroup. The Devastators double on them and lay a BM. Assault Swarm 4 marches up the right flank. The Tacticals double on Assault Swarm 2 and lay a BM. The Land Speeders ZoC Assault Swarm 2 and lay another BM. |

Turn 2 Strategy: Marines Turn 2. The Lictors teleport behind the Whirlwinds. The Tacticals engage Assault Swarm 2. Two guants and a rhino go down. The resolution roll was great for the Marines, all but the Warriors are hacked down. The Bikes engage the Genestealers in a firefight. One goes down. Two are hacked down and withdraw. Assault Swarm 4 launches an assault on the Devastators. Three guants and a Dev. go down. Assault Swarm 4 breaks and the Genestealers have a go. Again, three to one. But the stealers pull it off with a nice roll. The Scouts attempt to engage the Lictors but fail with a re-roll! They fire instead and lay a BM. The Lictors engage the Whirlwinds. Two go down. A tie is rolled. Two more go down. The Lictors consolidate into the rubble. Assault Swarm 3 double on the Land Speeders and lays a BM. The Land Speeder ZoC Assault Swarm 3 and the Dominatrix before it engages the Tacticals. The Thunderbolts try attacking Assault Swarm 1 again but only lay a BM. The Harridan gets the Speeders in a crossfire and takes out one. The Thunderbolts break the stealers who run to cover. The SC sustains on Assault Swarm 1 and takes out two gargoyles. The Dominatrix double on the Tacticals and takes town two and a rhino. The Thunderbolts attack the Lictors and lay a BM. The sole remaining Sniper advances on the Lictors and lays a BM (the things were saving like crazy). Assault Swarm 1 attempt to double but fails and regroups. |

Turn 3 Strategy: Marines Turn 3. The Terminators teleport in next to Assault Swarm 2 and 3. The Terminators engage Assault Swarm 2. The wipe it out at the loss of a single stand. The Land Speeders valiantly ZoC the Dom and Assault Swarm 3. Assault Swarm 3 engages the Speeders. Marine support was horrible but it was still only 2 to 1 in kills. The Speeders are wiped out though and the Tacticals break from the BM. The Thunderbolts try to save the broken Devastators but just lay a BM. The Scouts engage the Lictors. Two go down. They consolidate to get the blitz and other objective within 15cm. The Stealers engage the Devastators. With predictable results. The SC doubles on the Harridan. The Bike retain and engage. The Chaplain goes down but the Harridan break but stays put. Assault Swarm 1 marshalls. The Sniper moves to get the other objective within 15cm. The sole surviving Genestealer attempt a SC assination. But fails. The Thunderbolts attack Assault Swarm 1. Assault Swarm 4 makes a march to a Take and Hold. A Thunderbolt (its buddy got shot down by the Dom) attacks them and lays a BM. |

Turn 4 Strategy: Marines Turn 4 The SC engages Assault Swarm 1, looses a Razorback and a tactical to two gaunts and a Malfactor. The Marines win it. The Bike retains and marches to the Blitz. The Dom finally gets into CC! She flattens the Scout who manage to wound her along with two others. The Scouts are wiped out. The Thunderbolts try to break the Harridan, it make 3 saves! A second flight comes in and breaks her. Assault Swarm 4 takes the Blitz with a re-roll. The Terminators block Assault Swarm 3 from defending its own Blitz. Assault Swarm 3 tries to march but fails. End of Game. |

Heh, ya sorry about the lack of pictures. I'll see about taking more next time. The Circle 'O Fortification is made up of 6 plastic terrain pieces from the old Mega Force toy line. It came with the Triax Rocket Launchers: http://www.toyarchive.com/Megaforce/Tri ... chers.html I got a huge box of all the plastic bits on eBay a couple years ago for dirt cheap. I've been saving them for a resin bath. The funky looking tower things on the far right of the mat are camera stands for some old SGI computers. |

Okay... what did you take away from the game? What are your feelings on the army list (player and opponent)? How did you feel the changes you made from the existing Tyranid game affected things? Was it fun to play? |

The army list is restrictive with swarms sizes fixed at the start of the game. To elaborate: with 9.2.1 you could buy a brood group and split it between synapse groups however you want. Because Spawning was changed to allow only the recouping of losses (like the Necron ability) and you can't throw the brood creatures between swarms anymore that means whole brood groups have to stay with a synapse group. Play-wise I don't think this is going to affect much but it definitely makes the list seem a lot more uniform/rigid than it should be. The army list changes will see the return of the al a carte system that will make for a more diverse formation composition, so its a temporary problem. Despite getting strategy every turn and getting to set up strings of 4 activations in a row with my Marines I definitely felt like I was on my back foot. They just keep on coming. But I haven't played against the nids often, so I think I'm on a learning curve. I am happy it went to points though even though I lost, I like close games like that. Especially when I thought it was going to be over in the third. |
