Here is my first Epic Armageddon Battle Report, as well as my first game with my Eldar.  It was a 3000 point game between the Saim-Hann Eldar and the Dark Angels.
Some quick points: I am a relatively new Epic player, and on top of that this was my first Eldar game.  I was bound to make some tactical mistakes.  Secondly, the camera was giving me fits – either too bright, too dark, or something…sorry about the poor quality.  Lastly, Photoshop is still alien to me, so sorry I didn’t get it as nice looking as I would have liked to.
Now, on to the report!
Eldar: Saim-Hann v6.3, 3000 points (me)

[500] Wild Rider Clan Warhost #1: 1 Wild Rider, 6 Jetbikes, 6 Vypers (one with Farseer) [BTS]

[375] Wild Rider Clan Warhost #2: 1 Wild Rider w/Chieftan, 5 Jetbikes, 2 Vypers (one with Farseer)

[350] Shining Spear Aspect Warrior Warhost: 8 Shining Spears w/ 2 Exarchs

[250] Saim-Hann Guardian Troupe: 4 Guardians, 2 Heavy Weapons, 3 Wave Serpents

[375] Aspect Warriors Troupe: 6 Fire Dragons, 3 Wave Serpents

[315] Swords of Vaul Troupe: 3 Falcons, 2 Firestorms, 1 Fire Prism

[175] Night Spinner Troupe: 3 Night Spinners

[250] Engine of Vaul Troupe #1: 1 Scorpion
[250] Engine of Vaul Troupe #2: 1 Scorpion

[100] Ranger Troupe: 4 Rangers for garrisoning
[50] Wraithgate
---------
2990

Space Marines: Dark Angels v2.3, 3000 points (my friend)
[950] Deathwing Terminator:  4 Terminators, 4 Land Raiders, 2 Vindicators
[450] Devastator:  4 Devastators and 2 Land Raiders
[500] Tactical Squad #1: 6 Tactical units plus 6 Razorbacks w/ Lascannons, plus Chaplain
[450] Tactical Squad #2: 6 Tactical units plus 6 Razorbacks w/ Lascannons
[650] Reaver Titan
---------
3000 [near as I can tell from going back over his list]

Here is the Deployment with labels:

From the Dark Angels side of things (note the infantry on the hill in the foreground are riding in the transports, obviously):

The Eldar, in all their fast glory:

Turn 1

Dark Angels win initiative.  Tac #2 doubles down the DA left flank and fires at Scorpion #2 for no damage.  Tac #1 retained and also doubles towards the center, firing into the Swords of Vaul and killing one Falcon.

The Swords of Vaul single up and fire into Tac #1, killing one Razorback.  Thinking this was the time to strike, Wild Riders #2 retained initiative and rushed into Tac #1.  It was the last thing they would ever do, being wiped to a man and ‘only’ succeeding in killing the Chaplain.  This was the first in-game experience my new “nuclear diceâ€Â

Turn 2

Dark Angels win Initiative again (5 SR versus 3 hurt!).  The Avatar was summoned by the Farseer in Wild Host #2, onto “Titan Hillâ€Â

Turn 3

Finally, the Eldar won the initiative for a round!  Scorpion #1 fired into the advancing Tac #1, killing 2 passenger-free Razorbacks, but Scorpion #2 failed to retain.

The Dev Squad singled up the Eldar left and fired into the Guardians, causing no hits, but the shoot-assault combo failed when Tac #1 failed to retain (it’s coming in waves, watch out!).

The Guardians returned fire at the Devs, doing as well as their Space Marine counterparts, but Scorpion #1 retained and killed a single Dev trooper (had the Guardians had their full complement of Wave Serpents, they would have fled back to the Blitz objective, but wouldn’t have made it on foot so stood and fought).

“Tac Squad #1, take 2â€Â

A massive brawl ensued between the Wild Riders and Fire Dragons and the combined might of the Reaver, Tac #2 and the Deathwing Land Raiders firing from maximum distance…but the Saim-Hann won the battle, bringing the Reaver to within 2 wounds of death and breaking the other assisting formations.  The Tac squad withdrew out of sight over the hill they were perched on (but still out of Assault reach from the lightning-fast Shining Spears) but the Deathwing and Titan, both being Fearless, held their ground.

Hmmm... were the Reaver, Tacticals and Deathwing Land Raiders intermingled here?  Can't tell from the writing.

If the Tacs and Raiders were only in support range and not intermingled with the Reaver, they wouldn't break for being on the losing side, but would only take a single Blast marker.

Can you clear this up?

Thanks for the report, btw.

The Avatar retained and attempted to use his Commander ability to bring the Wild Riders #2 into the fray with him against the Reaver, but because of the blast marker on the Riders, the roll failed!  My Chieftan, the Supreme Commander, had perished in the first assault against the Tac Squad so I had no reroll!  Angrily, the Avatar used his one ‘Hold’ action to fire his Wailing Doom at the Titan.  Needing a 6+ it missed.  Still, there was hope!  I attempted to retain a second time, but the blasted Wild Riders would have nothing to do with it, and stayed put.  Ugh!

Just another rules note: if you fail an Action test you are not allowed to retain, even with the farsight ability.

Ah there it is: Section 1.12.8, 4th paragraph re: Supporting Formations.  Good to know, and no, they werent intermingled.  We just had that part wrong.  I think I had it mixed up with Commander ability, where the 3 formations assaulting all get broken if they lose.  My bad.

Re: Retaining after failed use of Commander ability.  I think this is what happened: After the Fire Dragons went, I rolled an Initiative check to get the Avatar to retain, and passed the 2+ roll.  THEN, I attempted a 3+ roll to get the Wild Riders to join along, and since that failed I did the Hold Action with the Avatar, but somehow had it in my mind that I hadnt failed an Action check since I got the original roll to work with the Avatar.

We may have made a mess of things, but thats how we arrived there.

Thanks for reading and for the notes.  They're always helpful!

Thats a very different Marine list. In fact I don't think any list has so few activations :)

I would suggest using the EpicUK or NetEA space marine core list (depending I guess if you live in the UK or not!). Both lists make the army cheaper.

Though as you play more you will have to add hunters/fighters/thnderhawks as the air game comes into view! (I've added hunters to the list.)

If you have only those models I would suggest the following re-organisation.

(400) Terminator, 4 Terminators, Chaplain (Teleport into battle.)
(425) Land Raiders, 4 Land Raiders, Hunter
(425) Devastator:  4 Devastators, Land Raider, HB Razorback, Rhino, 2 Vindicators
(475) Tactical Squad #1: 6 Tactical units, 5 Razorbacks w/ Heavy Bolters (you have so much AT firepower you need some AP options), Rhino, plus Chaplain
(425) Tactical Squad #2: 6 Tactical units, 5 Razorbacks w/ Heavy Bolters, Rhino
(650) Reaver Titan
The Rhinos are there as they are free and give you a spare transport slot.

EpicUK cost of the army 2800 with the 2 extra Hunters

So 200 more points to get stuff with! If you drop the Land Raider from the Devs you then have 275 more points. Options include getting 4 predators to support your armoured thrust, scrounging more points and getting 2 scout formations, getting a thunderhawk etc etc.

Here's another note:

When using the commander special ability, you only need to take a single Action test, using the initiative value of the formation containing the commander, not a test for each formation you're including.  A Blast marker on any formation participating gives a -1, but that's it.

Looking forward to more reports!

Nice report  :D
Perhabs for the next time you might want to try out the most recent NetEA Dark Angels armylist:

It isn't the EpicUK list but the combined effort of The_Real_Chris and me for NetEA :)

Thanks for the recommendations about lists to use.

However, I am using the NetEA Army Compendium list as found here.  As has been expressed countless times elsewhere on this forum, the amount of rules, variations, and army lists is dizzying, countless, and borderless - ie, Im too much of a newb to follow all changes, etc.  So, in my attempt to teach fellow friends the game, and to make sure we're all using the same rules and army lists, I have decided on one source: The downloadable files available for each army in that link, above (found in the "EpiComms EA Rules Amendments" section).

NOW, if thats simply not the place to go for army lists, I am willing to learn otherwise, but I spent a full month printing and reading posts and doing self-analysis on the difference between the EA Handbook 2008 by Markconz, the Compendium by Hojyn (heck, I never even found the one by Hena, short of downloading the new Specialist Games rules updated October 1st 2009) before setting on the previously-mentioned new SG rules...

So.  Where does that leave a newbie?  Still confused :)

I had been excited to find that EpiComms compilation of lists.  Am I still using the wrong set of rules?  Oh no, I dont need to mix Epic UK or Epic France into the mix...Ive got enough confusion as it is!

Not to be nitpicky, but there isnt even any version number on that list.  How do I know how current it is, once it is off the computer and printed and in my ever-growing Epic binder?
