Some notes on the Krieg plan. I knew my army was slow. The fastest move anyone had was 20 cm. Therefore, I would refuse one flank and try to hide this fact with "cunning" objective placement. You can see this in the first photo: all of the Krieg army is located on the right side of the battlefield. However, only one T&H objective is within reach. The other one is far to the left, almost 100 cm from the closest Krieg unit. Similarly, the Blitz objective is far too far to be reachable. This was deliberate; I wanted to achieve a local superiority on the flank of my choosing and try to win a war of attrition. In many ways, it worked, too. As seen in the photo, LatD has an expensive presence on the left, even though the majority of their troops is on the right, facing me. I tried to maintain some flexibility by having a strong central reserve: the heavy tanks and two Death Rider companies. This, too, was influenced by the need to not signal my plan to the enemy. One outcome of the plan was that I could only hope to win this thing be getting Defend the Flag and They Shall Not Pass. BTS is difficult when the target is a fearless war engine. However, winning on the right flank would give me a shot at this kind of victory, or at least a tie-breaker win, if I could conserve my own forces. More when Hena posts turn 1, later. |

Quote: (Hena @ Sep. 09 2009, 1:06 PM) I suppose there is something in connection with Finns and Orks as after the first assault I couldn't just leave them Gorgons alone! I really would have needed the Silver Towers against them. In every case, and there were a lot of cases, the Gorgons' 4+RA saved my bacon. I suspect we'll see different results in the future, since the amount of saved hits was very high, considering the odds. In this game, the Gorgons got to act in their optimal role most of the time. You said it yourself; you'll assault a Gorgon company differently the next time around. The big picture of the battle was that I succeeded to - concentrate force on the one decisive sector and - conserve my force. The concentration bit in particular was a big factor in this game. Hena's attempts at concentration, on the other hand, worked less well. The first weakness was deployment, where I managed to keep the SC formation hidden long enough for the LatD forces to spread all over the place. The second was getting to Engage the intermingled coven and Khorne engines on turn 1. It was a downhill walk from then on. Force conservation was based mostly on having good luck with the Gorgon and LR saves. Then, in the end, I had a bit of luck in Hena's turn 2 and 3 rally rolls. The Gorgon company is slower than a Chimera-mounted company. However, it is much better in assaults. This is the basic difference between Steel Legion and Kriegers: Steel Legion is maneuverable and flexible, with great firepower. Kriegers are slow, but they are tough. Based on this game, the design ideas seem to have worked out very well. |
