Apologies for the lack of detail and the hasty writing - I'm in a rush, and this was a game between me and wargame_insomniac from April that I forgot to write up. It was very enjoyable, with some very decisive engagements, and a rather close game I think.

Link to pics will follow.

Turn 1:

The battle began by the predators rumbling forwards to open fire upon a sentinel squadron skulking in among the buildings around the objective on the chaos left flank. The sentinels, however, overwatched and destroyed one of the chaos marine tanks, rendering the predators fire mostly ineffective.

The Imperial commander called in fire support on the large chaos marine retinue holding the chaos centre, placing four blast markers. Wary of further Imperial artillery strikes, the Black Legion warlord tasked his veteran marines to infiltrate forward and suppress the other battery ? their harassing missile launcher fire placed a blast marker.

Yet the massed Imperial firepower was prodigous, the Guard commander realising the necessity of blunting the Chaos armoured advance. Hence the Imperial Vulture gunships launched a missile strike on the Chaos Marine Landraider company, destroying two and breaking the remainder. Enraged, the Chaos warlord ordered his other folorn hope of veterans to launch an assault on the sentinels on the chaos left flank. The traitors wiped out the lightly-armoured walkers for no loss.

Imperial AA crews and the remaining sentinel squadron, menaced by the infiltrating chaos veterans, turned their long autocannons on the traitors and cut down two squads, as the Chaos Raptors jetted from the right flank to the left. One of the Feral titans lurched forward, hosing down the hydra squadron with heavy shells and blasting two of the AA tanks to bits, as the Imperial Guard HQ company redeployed to block any advance by the foot-bound chaos marine retinue deployed in the centre. The marines, slogging up to the top of the rocky outcrop, rained fire down on the guardsmen but only destroyed a pair of chimerae.

The Imperial commander called in armoured support, and the Leman Russ company engaged the chaos marines with their full firepower ? despite the rocky cover, twenty-five marines fell casualty to bolter or battlecannon and the traitors retreated back down the slopes. The chaos warlords retinue, in a bold stroke, marched into close proximity of the metal beasts.

The Imperial commander radioed the second manticore battery to call in another artillery strike, but still taking cover from the harrassment by the chaos scouts, they refused to respond in time to launch an effective strike this turn. Heedful to the heavy Imperial firepower in the form of a Shadowsword company, the second feral titan loped forward to attack the Leman Russ company, reducing one tank to slag with its Hellmouth. The Shadowsword company picked off three of the chaos predators and broke the traitor armour, which retreated into the woods on the chaos left flank.

The lone remaining hydra failed to rally, as did the chaos predators and the foot retinue

Turn 2:

The turn began with the chosen terminators, along with a trio of the mutants, teleported into the Imperial rear areas behind the Leman Russ company. The ever fickle powers of chaos did not favour the elite terminators, as they arrived vomiting into their helments (four blast markers!).

The Guard commander doubled his troops forward to attack the chaos warlords retinue, enveloping its left flank, but their fire merely annoyed the chaos warlord, and while he hoped for the support of the armoured company the Leman Russ commander failed to order his tanks to attack in time. Initiative passed to the forces of chaos, and one of the feral titans hammered away at the Leman Russ and destroyed another two of the tanks, while the obliterators destroyed a manticore and broke the battery while the chosen recovered from teleport sickness.

The remaining sentinel squadron, realising the chaos warlord was exposed, assaulted the flank of his retinue. With heavy fire support from the Russ company and the supreme commander, they wiped out the arrogant warlords retinue! Meanwhile chaos scouts picking off another manticore, before being strafed by the vultures, who resorted to anti-infantry duties now their missiles were expended. The other feral stalked forward and placed a blast marker on the Leman Russ while the remaining manticore battery, in a confused direct barrage, intermittently rained missiles down on the chaos scouts, slaying a squad and breaking the remainder.

The Chaos raptors, moving with a lightning pace, seized the Imperial blitz and surrounded the Imperial Guard commanders company. Finally, the shadowswords redeployed, rumbling round the side of a farming compound to draw a bead on a feral and strip its shields.

The chaos armoured units rallied.

Turn 3:

The chosen began an assault on the Leman Russ company from the rear, destroying most of the tanks as they turned to retreat ? only the commissar escaped. Meanwhile, a feral titan caught the Imperial Guard Commanders formation in a lethal crossfire, destroying 4 chimera and killing 15 men, as well as breaking the company, which retreated onto the rocky high ground. The Imperial retreat was covered by a bombardment by the manticore battery, which broke the raptors, as the chaos land raiders pursued the commissar?s vanquisher.

The vultures strafed the other unit of chaos scouts, breaking them and cutting down a squad, while the remaining chaos predator killed five imperial guardsmen from the command unit. The Shadowswords turned their mighty guns on one of the traitor titans and cut it to pieces in a spectacular display of firepower, and the remaining sentinels subjected the chaos land raiders to harassing fire.

The Raptors rallied.

Turn 4:

The chosen assaulted the commissars vanquisher, destroying it, while the remaining feral shot down a vulture while shielding itself from the guns of the shadowswords. The sentinels intensified their fire on the landraiders, destroying the mighty tanks and breaking the remnants of the company, while the lone chaos predator raced across the rocky slopes of the central hill to destroy one of the imperial sentinels. The manticores shot at the raptors, but they were undeterred and assaulted the sentinels, destroying two of them and breaking the squadron. The Shadowswords, frustrated by lack of a worthy target, blasted away at the chosen but by this time the order to retreat had been given, the imperial forces having lost the day.

3-1 Chaos (I think, may have been 2 - 1)

This was the first time I used ferals for a long time and it was a brutal game - lots of crossfires, and mistakes on both sides. (The dead chaos warlord is evidence of that!) It was rather fun actually.

Regarding actual constructive feedback, Id say it confirmed my support for them either going up in price (as in the tournament mods) or losing MW off the hellmouth and staying at 300. Infantry, vehicles, anything, they ate them alive, and were fast enough to deliver their firepower wherever they wanted.

Oh, and reinforced foot retinues are dissappointing for their cost! Does anyone actually buy havocs or cult marines? I find them overpriced at 150. Mayhaps a question for the forcelist section
