Epic: Combat Patrol

2700 or 3000pt games are the accepted standard size for a pickup game of Epic.  While they can generally be finished in a couple of hours it can be a bit of a struggle to fit weeknight games into a busy schedule.  To speed things up we decided to work on a sort of combat patrol version of the game, facing off small 1500pt forces of infantry on foot, armoured infantry and light vehicles against each other.

The general guideline that we used to create these lists was:

-          50% of the units should be eligible to garrison
-          No War Engines
-          No Fliers

These are the lists that we came up with for our first game.

1500pt Game Space Wolves vs Traitor Guard.

Space Wolves (1500pts) ? Using the standard marine list

-          Scouts (4 with 2 rhinos)
-          Scouts (4 with 2 rhinos)
-          Scouts (4 with 2 rhinos) Sniper upgrade
-          Land Speeders (5) no upgrades
-          Land Speeders (5) no upgrades
-          Bikers (5) 1 Attack bike
-          Bikers (5) 1 Attack bike
-          Assault Marines (4) 1 Chaplain

Traitor Guard (1500pts) ? Using Steel Legion List with 1 Commissar per 450pts

-          Infantry (12 Guard, 1 Commander)
-          Infantry (12 Guard, 1 Commander) 1 Commissar
-          Storm Troopers (8 with 4 Valkyries) 1 Commissar
-          Vultures (4)
-          Rough Riders (6) 1 Commissar
-          Sentinels (4)

Deployment

The Space Wolves decided stealth was a wise option with the traitors gun ships patrolling in the area.  Starting behind cover.

Turn 1

The space wolf land speeders rocketed forward killing three units of rough riders and sending the rest running away to hide with their tails behind their legs.  Unfortunately they were shot back in return by the remainder of the traitor guard army loosing two of their number.

Lots of small firefights erupted around the table but with the heavy cover and most units having to double to reach anything their were few casualties.

The traitorous guard were obviously having massive leadership problems with three formations failing to activate this turn.

End Turn 1

Turn 2

This turn turned out to be much more brutal.  Kim moved her infantry formation on the far side of the table forward to shoot at my scouts at the end of the previous turn so I surrounded them and wiped them out before they could activate.

Kim moved her Valkyries forward and wiped out my bikers but failed to activate her Vultures leaving my land speeders safely unharmed.  After a brutal battle I was able to wipe out her Valkyrie mounted rough riders but was left in the open to take a reasonable number of casualties myself  (resulting in the Assault marines being shot at until broken).

End Turn 2

to be continued.........

She had moved them up towards the rocky outcropping in the center of the table so that she could disembark the infantry to take suppression (15cm range) allowing the Valkyries to fire.

My response was to surround her using the Land Speeders (which rolled ridiculously high on their shooting and almost broke the unit (one BM off)) then assault my Assault Marines, who lost two of their number but were able to kill the remaining Storm Troopers and Valkyries due to the supporting fire of the land speeders and scouts.

Nice idea. What is the object in this scenario - just total annihilation of the enemy? When does it end?
(using GT objectives/goals in this small game seems a way to yet more enhance the problems associated in them)

We were just going to use GT objectives/goals.

It would be interesting to try some other objectives.

Not sure what though.

Thanks for the link Hena, will have to give that version a try.

The numerous objectives did seem a bit much for the points value in our 1500pt game.

Turn 3

My Land Speeders doubled up to the Vultures to put some BM's on them and try and neuter their still as of yet missile strikes.  Managing to kill one pretty much done the trick meaning only one was able to fire.

Kim's remaining infantry formation moved up and contested two of the objectives in the center of the table after I had broken the Sentinels with a couple of units shooting (without casualties).

Kim moved her rough riders into the woods near her baseline objective to try and prevent me from taking it but I moved a unit of bikes around behind them and assaulted them to death with the other landspeeder unit with firefight support from the bikes.

In the end I had four victory conditions.  They shall not pass, Break Their Spirit, The baseline objective and two objectives on the opponents table half.

Nice looking board. I like the restrictions you used. They're a good idea for a small game.

I agree, good concept and very nice board.  Limiting unit types and size, forces the gamers to play a "tactician's game" as opposed to an all out "Ludendorff/Zhukov" type offensive operation.  Both are a fun games, though ... :;):  :D

Wouldn't this unfairly disadvantage Eldar in troop selection compared to other lists, as they are only able to garrison Rangers and War walkers.

Maybe instead: 50% eldar forces must be able to enter via a Wraithgate?

Nice point.  Sounds like a good option.

Cool, nice plan. I agree the lesser no. of objectives is probably a good idea.
