Post subject:  Thoughts on an Ork list

(Full disclosure: This is a variation on a list I found at the UK Epic list repository)

I was playing around with lists for an upcoming event and was wondering what thoughts you guys might have on it.
Code:
Ghazgkhull Thraka's War Horde (NetEA Army Compendium 2012)
==================================================

WARBAND (BIG) [630]
4 Nobz, 12 Boyz, 4 Grotz, 8 Battlewagon
Warlord

WARBAND (BIG) [350]
4 Nobz, 12 Boyz, 4 Grotz

STORMBOYZ WARHORDE [300]
12 Stormboyz

KULT OF SPEED [235]
8 Warbike, Flakwagon

KULT OF SPEED [235]
8 Skorcha, Flakwagon

BLITZ BRIGADE [200]
2 Gunwagon, 2 Flakwagon, Oddboy (Zzap)

BLITZ BRIGADE [200]
2 Gunwagon, 2 Flakwagon, Oddboy (Zzap)

BLITZ BRIGADE (BIG) [350]
2 Flakwagon, 6 Gunwagon, 2 Oddboy (Soopa, Soopa)

FIGHTA SQUADRON [200]
4 Fighta Bomba

FIGHTA SQUADRON [150]
3 Fighta Bomba

FIGHTA SQUADRON [150]
3 Fighta Bomba

Here are my concerns:
1) Stormboyz - I've never used them, but I like the movement boost. I could swap them out for a Big Warband, but they would be on foot and I fear they would be crushed before they made it to combat. I think the 12 Stormboy mob is large enough to be effective in combat (versus the 6 Stormboy mob) if I need to get in there and take/contest an objective.
a) Should I keep them as is?
b) Split them up into two smaller mobs, keeping them out of combat, but using them to grab/contest?
c) Swap them for a Big Warband on foot?
d) Swap them for 2 Blitz Brigade/1 Big Blitz Brigade? (Fewer models, better armor/shootin'.)

2)Fighta Bommerz - I've never found them to be really effective, but having some AT potential is better than having none, I guess.
a) Keep them as is?
b) Dump the third formation and incorporate the units into the remaining two (i.e. 2 formations of 5)?
c) Dump the third formation and get a Landa for the footslogging Warband instead (I've never used a Landa, so I don't know much about them.)

Thanks!

1. A variety of things can work, usually I would split the Stormboyz into 2x 6 rather than 1 x 12 as it gives more flexibility in grabbing objectives, stalling etc.

2. I would usually take one formation of at least 5 FB, so you can fly through flak etc and still have good chance of smashing an artillery battery or similar. LV's are also good targets. Maybe try a 7 and a 3, or 2 x 5. A Landa with warband is also a good alternative option.

Thoughts:

Stormboyz.
I find stormboyz work better in small formations. They are not resilient enough to be a 'hammer' formation, so are better suited to keeping your activation count up, snatching objectives and using their great ZoC to deny your opponent free movement - especially in that vital turn 3.

The warbikes.
Drop the flakwagon. As warbikes count as infantry the flakwagon will be an easy target for any AT shots. This will also mean that the bikes can be transported in the....

...Landa
Which you should replace the fighta squadron of 4 with.
Landas are excellent for allowing you to deliver an air assault anywhere on the table and mean you can go chasing after blitz or BTS objectives.

Fightas?
I like 'em. The ability to hit vehicles with AT 4+ regardless of where they are on the table is superb. Most other Ork firepower has to double to get into range; meaning you're generally hitting on sixes...

Hope this helps :)

Cheers
Reedar

why would you pay for the bikes mobility to just stick them in a landa?

I don't know BM's model situation, so wasn't going to suggest chopping them out for a smaller warband - but yes, a warband + your preference of boyz/grotz/nobz is a better tactical decision.

That said, I've had joy in the past with Landa mounted bikes as you can pick off a formation which is out off the way, and the bikes can still influence the game. Generally speaking one a warband is down, its mobility is severely reduced!

I've not faced orks enough, but does nobody use the two thunderhawk trick with landas? (drop, engage, pickup with second landa, fly off, repeat)?

Thanks for the input guys, it is appreciated. And yes, Reedar, you are correct in assuming I only have two Big Warbands available at the moment. ;) I actually have additional Warbands (3?), but they're currently unpainted (but so are my Landas, Warbikes, and Warwagons.)

So, based on everyone's advice, I'll split the Stormboyz into two formations. I actually had them in two formations in the beginning, but I thought the larger formation might give me an additional punch in CC, as well as probably allowing me a +1 for combat resolution.

So the consensus is to drop the Warbikes and pick up a Landa and a Warband? The only thing that concerns me about this change is that I go from (potentially) eight AT+4 shots down to two (though I usually can't hit the broad-side of a barn anyway.) In addition, I would think that the Warbikes have a far better chance of survival than the Warband. Granted, the Landa can drop the Warband anywhere on the board (barring AAA getting in a lucky shot,) but with a 105cm March for the Warbikes ain't bad either (though they can't get into CC that turn.)

Man, thinking is so hard...

How do you load up the ground troops on the second Thunderhawk/Landa?

Don't they have to move to get in? And they already were activated by the landing?

Post subject:  Re: Thoughts on an Ork list

if the thunderhawk lands close enough, it can 'suck in' the troops within 5cm without them having to move

4.2.5
...Landing: Aircraft with a transport capability can land after
making their approach move and having being fired upon by
any enemy flak. If the aircraft lands in dangerous terrain it
must take a dangerous terrain test. After the aircraft has landed,
any units being transported may disembark and are placed
within 5cms of the transport aircraft (skimmers and units with
jump packs can be placed within 15cms, to represent them
dropping from the aircraft as it comes in to land).
Alternatively, the aircraft may pick up any friendly units within
5cms, assuming they will fit on board of course

emphasis mine

so the idea is drop off terminators/orks/aspect warriors, win assault by large margin, consolidate back to a clump within 5cm of the planned landing zone, fly empty transport in, pick them up, fly off at the end of the turn... lather, rinse, repeat!

Sounds very un-Orky though; jumping in a landa and flying away sounds like running away. Either that or it stinks of ummie ~taktiks~.
