Post subject: | How Many Warbands are too many? (Is there such a thing?) |
Hi all, After a long break due to school, I am done with that and ready to get down to the serious things in life: games! I have a huge collection of Orks (when I couldn't play, I collected, and I was in school for a long time), and I honestly have no idea if I need them all. My first question, though, is how many footsloggers do you use? I currently have enough Orks for 3 'Uge Warbands. They aren't based yet, however, so before I commit to that work, am I ever likely to use that many, or is that simply too many bases to throw down in any but the largest of games (either in points size or area)? It is far from the limit of my Ork collection, so I would not be entirely reliant on them for my points. What do people think - can I reduce that a bit, or is it best to go with them all? Thanks! Chris |

You're talking about 90 stands, right? That's high end, and your activation count would be quite low with 3 warbands... but it's interesting that your army-mix is uncommon but generally untested. The thing that keeps people from Maxing orks in this way is more the inconvenience and boredom of painting and basing them than the innate weakness of that kind of list. |

Hi Carrington, Yeah, I should have been specific. I am talking 90 stands total (30 per 'Uge Warband). I had thought of the activation issue, but of course I also have enough models for several stormboyz hordes, a number of Kults of Speed, Blitz Brigades, etc. So it is really just balancing the potential "cool" factor of having that many stands of infantry and their potential value. If I can save myself some time and space by only have 60 stands, I think I may go that route. I am curious to hear what everyone thinks, though. |

Formations that big are horribly vulnerable to clipping. |

that said send Yme-Loc a PM: one of the nastiest ork armies i've ever experienced was his which had something like 3 big (maybe even 'uge') formations and then 2 normal warbands in landa's backed up by a super stompa, blitz brigades, big gunz and a bit more maybe. THink the army list may be lying around somewhere on Epic Uk's website |

zombocom wrote: Formations that big are horribly vulnerable to clipping. Well, they wouldn't have to be fielded in that size exactly. They could be any combination of that number of stands. I suppose I could say it was "9 warbands" just as easily. I just wasn't sure how many was too many. Thanks for the suggestion MoK. I will do that! |

I've also faced some ork warband hordes that maxed infantry and air power, they did ok. |

With that much infantry you'll struggle to claim objectives, but the opponent will struggle to take them off you too. Honestly it's not a recipe for a fun game. |

It can be done, but you do have to have a screen of scouts to protect the flanks of the formations as your opponent should be aiming to clip, break your orks and then clip again to wipe them out. |

Infantry horde ork armies can be quite tricky to use but once you get the hang of them are very powerful, its just important to get your head around a very atritional and ground control style of game. I use in my standard 3000pts army 2 Big Warbands with 2 extra boys + 2 extra free grots 2 Warbands each with extra boy + extra free grot (these go in Landas) Doesnt sound like much, but thats actually 72 units of infantry and can look very intimidating on the battle field (so much so that sometimes people I am playing think they are facing many more orks than they actually are). It does have weakness's though that have to be factored in to your list construction, although good at holding ground the warbands are very slow and any support formations you have should try to have alot of speed to compensate for this. Apart that is for the main support formation - either a Gargant or a Supa stompa mob. The warbands should basically be set up on either side of one of these so that one flank is protected by the support fire power of the Gargant/Supa Stompa. The other exposed flank should have as many grots as possible in possition to counter charge so that any clipping assaults are faced with a wall of grots. Its also important to realise these big warbands are there to control the board more than go after and kill things, they can do this but its often more defensively in response to a poorly executed attack that underestimates them. Their real job is to be intimidating and force your oponent back. The support formations in your army should use the big warbands as a focul point to fight around and its these that cause the real dammage, soopa gun armed blitz brigades and the guns of the suporting Gargant/Soopa stompa cause continuous artrition while air assaulting warbands in Landas slaughter the enemy in combat all the while the big grinding warbands exert a pressure your oponent will find difficult to deal with. |

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. I think that I will base and paint 6 or 7 warbands to start (60-70 stands) and get some games in before I make in major decisions. I do prefer the idea of a combined force (stompas, wagons, etc.), so I may make one of those to start and build from there. With 7 gargants of different styles, 60 gunwagons, 20 stompas, 50 buggies/traks, and so on, I should have no shortage of options (yes, L4, I know that is small ![]() Chris |
