Units:Armour

Do the costs of these need to be reduced?

Compared to SM
4 Predator Destructors 225pts (with ATSKNF+SR5+allowing access to hunter)
4 Chaos Predators 200

4 Land Raider 325pts (with ATSKNF+SR5+hunters)
4 Chaos Predators 300pts

Yes, but not if they're also going to be made Core.

Core formations often get a slight surcharge for being able to "unlock" support formations.

Ah. E&C was suggesting that they not do this though. And I actually think its a good idea to test out

I'm not so sure about this one.

Keep in mind there is some min-maxing ability with the CSM armor formations that is not available for SMs. For example, Chaos can make a formation of 2LR, 3 Preds. The combination of 4+RA at the front and 1 more unit puts it between the Marine Pred and LR formations in toughness, probably closer to the Preds due to TSKNF. However, it has more firepower with 5 units instead of 4. 300 points, at the high end of the bracket between the price of SM LRs and Preds, is pretty close.

Also, 75 per LR/50 per Pred is a very straightforward formation pricing. Trying to tweak it to change the overall formation cost by 25-50 points is going to be difficult without getting fiddly. You'd probably end up with something like...

4 Preds - 175
+0-4 Preds - +50 each
Sub LRs for Preds - +25 each

And, of course, once you drop core formations below about 200 points, you have to start worrying about spamming, especially if they are reasonably tough (4 AVs with decent saves), with good move and decent range so they can drop BMs on targets of choice.

Personally, I'd rather keep them as-is and charge a 25-point premium for being core formations than to try to tweak the points and have them end up needing restrictions.

I think PG meant you suggested that pricing and core be an either/or choice, not both done at the same time.

And if not, that's how I read your post as well, so you should probably clarify what you meant.

Well, the price could be set at a basic level, for example:

Armour Formation - Four Chaos Predators - 175 points
Up to four Chaos Predators may be added for 50 points each
Any number of Chaos Predators may be replaced with Chaos Land Raiders for 25 points each

I thought it was you. It was in one of the other BL topics.

I thought it was a neat idea though no matter who said it. If you are concerned about the list moving away from a core of Retinues then make it so the Armoured Core formation doesn't unlock support and/or elite formations.
