Asking for a friend thinking of getting into Epic, do any of the variant lists allow the use of Chaos thunderhawks?

T-Hawks were introduced after the Heresy. Some of the more recent Renegade Chapters might have them, but I'm not sure.

Ruleswise, I dont think so, though it would be pretty easy to 'counts as' a recently turned chapter as a Codex list, if you didn't mind loosing Daemons.

Yup, I've got 3 Chaos Thunderhawks and I use the Red Corsair list.

I thought they were brought in just before / during the heresy re: black library books.

A stormbird would be cool.

From BL fluff they were being rolled out as the heresy got under way though stormbirds were still prevalent. For epic early in the design stage it was decided to leave Thawks+Landing craft out of the Black Legion list so they weren't Marines with daemons but no ATSKNF

Who cares about fluff. Make a SM army but use chaos pieces. This will give you a bunch of units that you can also use in chaos lists.

The red corsairs list is a really good one, incidentally. It Jammu favourite variant chaos list.

Yes Red Corsairs has them. And a Landing Craft is a perfect proxy/substitute for a Stormbird
