Post subject:  Black Legion: Where do you put your defilers?
so i picked up 3 defiler crabs from otterman, they look GREAT. so i picked up 3 more. so i have 6 now, and i was wondering where the rest of you chaos players put them army wise.

originally i was going to add 3 to a predator formation, but the speed difference really deterred me.

so then i was thinking about adding 3 to a unit of decimators. same movement rate, and the defiler cannons can support the decimators role as a troop killer.

or do they run well with foot troops?

what are your opinions?

In the Black Legion army list, I've only ever seen them added to infantry retinues guarding the Blitz goal.

Possibly also garrisons with dreads in addition to defilers. Infantry can use as cover.

With current stats, Defilers are quite an expensive non-specialist unit that has a range of potential roles, but not great at any one role in particular.

I expect given recent petit crabs, they'll be showing up a lot more even if they are difficult to get the best use out of...

I've used two Dreads and two Defilers with a Retinue to garrison.

I get much more use out of Defilers in a Cultist army.

LaTD are allowed independant defiler formations.

They're a great garrison is all... good support for the Cultist mobs that are way forward as well.

On garrisoned overwatch they're scary to approach and they can direct/indirect fire a lot of the board early on up there.

How many people play them with the Net-EA list mods? i.e. loose the barrage weapon, but become 20cm infiltrators. That would seem to change their role somewhat.

I do... I also primarily use the Red Corsairs army list however, which gives them the choice of having their own formation too.

I use them to skulk around my backfield putting out some long range shots to ward off approaches, acting as a massive threat to anyone who wants to advance, as their 40cm charge distance and powerful CC stat is impressive.

I can't see that tactic working as well without their own formation, as then they're tied to their parent formation and must stay in coherency.

I've used them with garrison retinues.  I have a formation of Slaanesh marines painted up with the smallest of the knights which I use as proxy Defilers.  They are the flank retinue.  The Defilers add firepower for OW and area denial.  They add CC threat if the enemy gets too close (maybe trying to outflank them) and they have IDF to reach out if the enemy moves to the opposite flank.  I never added Dreads just due to a lack of matching models, but I agree with Chroma that it would help optimize the formation.

I haven't played them with the revised, direct fire only stats.

Yes, all my use of them has been with the "old" stats... with the "improved" movement, I think they greatly lose value, at least for Black Legion.

where are the alternate rules for the defiler?

i would gladly trade out indirect fire for some speed. the newer defiler in the new chaos codex lost the indirect but gained attacks and fleet.

is there a chance of a defiler only formation in the BL list? i mean in the fluff abbadon created the first defilers, so it would seem easy to believe he would have large stockpiles of them.
