Hello all, I remember when I first saw the forge world epic flyers. ?My thoughts where... "Wow, those look great!" ? ![]() Followed quickly by... "Wow, those are huge!" ? ![]() I was so accustomed to our tiny Ork flyers, Thunderbolts, Marauders it was hard to believe that this Lighting "light" Imperial flyer, let alone the bulkier Thunderbolt that followed, could be in scale. Now my first instinct was to believe them. ?Modern warplanes planes are generally huge, but mosy fighters for mini games are tiny. ? I am disgusted by the general miniature trend to treat them as a side dish to your ground forces. ?Something to decorate the plate but not to dominate or distract from your pretty Leman Russ. ? I say Blah!!!! ?Give me a A10 and I'll show you why T80's live in fear!!!! ?Ha HA HA ? Sorry I digress ? ![]() Recently I started to assemble my Imperial squadrons and while building them that nagging thought returned. "hey these are big...did Forge World Really Scale creep these as well" ? ![]() So I decided to but it to a test. ? I took the most Modern fighter in the US inventory and scaled down it's propotions down to 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm scale. ?I printed imgaes of this fighter in various scales and lined up my Thunderbolts and Lightings. ? I choose the F22 a big boy in size but something I felt was good to compare to. I got the stats from here http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/f-22.htm and here is my math and assumptions. Please check I woudln't trust me 6mm = 1/285 8mm = 1/213 10mm = 1/170 Length: Actual = 62 feet 6mm ? = 2.61 inches 8mm ? = 3.50 inches 10mm = 4.38 inches Wingspan: Actual = 44.5 feet 6mm ? = 1.87 inches 8mm ? = 2.51 inches 10mm = 3.14 inches So how do Forge World made fighters line up against the top of the Line from Lockheed Martin Were lets see the pictures. ? I started with the 10mm print out |

The lighting fighter fits in it's intened lines. But you always here that Epic is more like 8mm than 6mm. I bet those scupltors had that in mind when they made these....these are really eight mil aircraft I bet that exactly what they did those dirty dogs... ![]() |

Well I guess I was wrong. While closer the FW flyers are not 8mm aircraft |

Well thats just leaves one choice if they aren't 10mm, and they arent 8mm, are they really and truely... It just can't be true. |

Well look it that. Now the imperial craft are little chunky and they have big wing spans, which you probally need to provide lift to something that aerodynamic, but they are right about in line with this scaled F22. If you look at the cockpits, engines, and flight controls; things are about right. I never doubted them for a minute.... ![]() |

Of course this begs the question... If these are 6mm what scale are all those old epic aircraft. Well I don't have my old Thunderbolt or Maraduers anymore but I still do have my old Ork fighter Bombers. |

Right as I suspected. Thats is why in AI my old Ork Fighter Bombers will be Grot Rockets. ![]() Well I hope you have enjoyed this little side trip See ya "Go Airforce!" |

I'm guessing the metal SG aircraft are somewhere around the 4mm mark. I've seen it written (And it seems logical enough to believe it) that SG's Aircraft and also all Epic Titans are at 1/500 scale, while everything else in Epic is at 1/300 scale (Circa 6mm). |

Yeah, how does it look for 1/300? |

To be fair to the poor SG fighter Bomber maybe I choose something that was just not a fair comparison. So I did the same to the F16 and lined up the Grot Rockit. Oh well I gave it a try. ![]() |

(The_Real_Chris @ Mar. 04 2007,15:42) QUOTE Yeah, how does it look for 1/300? Real Chris, If I changed the caluction to 1/300 scale for the 6mm The F22 picture would be 0.13 inches shorter in length and 0.09 shorter in wingspan. So the FW flyers would look more proper in length and their wings would appear that much longer. But overall a very slight change between 1/285 and 1/300. Thanks for the replies. Now a B1 Bomber vs a Marauder Bomber. Thats would be interesting... ![]() |

Well.. yes... now here is an interesting thing - compare the aircraft to those of WWII. The P-51 is small compared to modern aircraft. ![]() ![]() This could be why the SG metals are smaller a more WWII size. However the moment a jet engine is added the scale goes up a little And here is the P-51 next to the B-17 (which if I recall carries less than an F-15E and is only a little bigger). ![]() But yes the aircraft are pretty much in scale. So I guess what kind of feel GW's sculptor was trying to get would determine the size. |

All you need to do is look at cockpit sizes to know that the SG aircraft are very undersized. I would like to see 40 Marines fit inside the SG Thunderhawk! ![]() |
