Platoon Based Steel Legion Army List

Steel Legion Imperial Guard armies have a strategy rating of 2.  Steel Legion Imperial Guard formations and Imperial Navy formations have an initiative rating of 2+.  Titans have an initiative rating of 1+.

Special Rules:

Imperial Guard Commanders ? Some Imperial Guard units and characters are noted as being Imperial Guard Commanders.  Imperial Guard Commanders can order up to all of the formations that are a part of their company, added as a Support Formation to their company, or added as a Company Upgrade, to follow them when they make an assault, as long as all of the formations can trace 5cm unit coherency, even through other formations of the company, back to one unit within 5cm of a unit from the Imperial Guard Commander?s formation.

Alternatively an Imperial Guard Commander can order up to all of the formations that are a part of their company, added as a Support Formation to their company, or added as a Company Upgrade, to have the same orders of Advance, Double, Marshall, Overwatch, or Sustained Fire Orders and to fire upon the same target formation or combine barrage points as long as all of the formations can trace 5cm unit coherency, even through other formations of the company, back to one unit within 5cm of a unit from the Imperial Guard Commander?s formation.

Imperial Guard formations that are from a different company may be part of a combined assault or combined fire, but the number of formations that may participate are limited to 3 formations and there is a ?1 penalty to the activation dice roll for each formation from outside of the Imperial Guard Commander?s company.

Imperial Guard Command Rule ? Imperial Guard formations from the same company that can trace 5cm unit coherency, even through other formations of the company, back to one unit within 5cm of a unit from the Imperial Guard Commander?s formation are all considered to be part of the same formation with the allocation of casualties and blast markers.  If a formation of the company is within 5cm unit coherency of the command formation at the beginning of the move and at the end of the move then they are considered to have maintained that coherency during that move if attacked by units on Overwatch.

If a formation leaves unit coherency from the rest of the company (or the company command formation is destroyed) then the blast markers are proportionally distributed between that formation and the remaining units.

Imperial Guard Mass Movement ? The Imperial Guard are not as well trained nor experienced as the long-lived Space Marines or Eldar.  To make sure that such a large force can operate well on the battlefield the Imperial Guard relies heavily upon basic training and following the orders passed down from the chain of command.  To represent this the Imperial Guard player must activate three formations every time it is his turn to take an action.  Should the Imperial Guard player use an Imperial Guard Commander to combine the actions of multiple formations those formations count towards this requirement.  Any attempts to retain initiative after the three required actions will only result in one more action, not three separate ones.

Commissars ? All Imperial Guard companies may include 1D3 Commissar characters.  The Commissars do not cost any points.  If the dice roll exceeds the number of Commissar units that a player has available then these may be represented with other appropriate markers (certain colored dice, special counters, etc.) as long they are consistent and the other player agrees.

Roll to see how many Commissars a player may add to each company at the start of the battle before each player sets up.  If the company includes a Supreme Commander then the first Commissar must be attached to the Supreme Commander?s formation.  Any further Commissars may be attached to any other formations that are part of the company.  You may not include more than one Commissar per formation.  If you have more Commissars than formations then any excess are lost.

So I have a stack of small activations?

The game would fast become an activation battle - I would max my BM from firing at the enemy.

I can tell you from doing so much siege testing that activations count for a lot - if I can get 30+ I can smuther you with blastmarkers. It was a similar problem for the closest comparison, the original siegemaster infantry formation plus 2 flak gun formations during testing. 20+ activations and you won simply by breaking the enemy, the firepower wasn't enough to kill much (unless it was an infantry horde which also was the biggest danager) but a bm was a bm.

Here the strategy would be to break as much as possible before it activatives, then eek out formations untilt he enemy has all gone, then run rings round them.

Sorry I see no justification behind completely destroying the known IG structures. The army list works quite well now.

Beside this I don?t see the influence of a single low ranked officer (platoon leader) in battles including bataillons full of troops. Leave it to a commander to lead the formation. Low level officers may be present but their job is to get their platoons where the commander wants them. So see them as invisible command structure to get the company work at all.

We do not need to copy all stuff from old games, especially if they make the existing game unwieldy and foremost unbalanced. Next step we try to design special rules for Marine Veteran Sergeants or Infantry grunts with MK41 hot pants from forgeworld "the 70s". All this things only make the game complicated without adding depth.

my 0,002 cents
