Hello!  :)

I've been going through a 'what themed army can you get out the E:A IG army list' type-of phase, and I feel that what's missing is a sort of Elite/Storm Trooper type list.

I know that the 40k Vostroyan miniatures were a bit like Marmite - you either loved the or hated them (myself the former :D ) - I think the concept of a regiment of better armoured, disciplined & trained Guard has its appeal.  Also, I think the current plastic Valhallan Epic Guard can be quite easily converted to look something like Vostroyans, with the addition of Green Stuff furry helmets (oo-er! :p )

So I started playing around with the Guard list as is, and I thought that you could get something like this by taking one or more Tank Company formations, and support formations of Storm Troopers (sans transports) to represent Vostroyans.

The problems with this:

- limited command - I've found, like many others, a Supreme commander is essential for Guard armies for that invaluable activation re-roll;
- limited access to other support formations like Sentinels 'cause you've just taken Storm Troopers;
- and it's relatively quite expensive, so for a Tourney list you get fewer detachments and less activations.

So, just throwing out some initial thoughts about this list, I would propose a few things:

- Use Storm Trooper formations to represent Vostroyans, and exchange them for Infantry formations in the main list;
- Keep the formation size & stats largely unchanged, drop the 'Scout' ability, drop one Platsmagun for every two units and add a Heavy Bolter in their place (like the '1-in-2' Autocannons on Guard formations)
- Add a unit with a Commander, and up the formations value by 50 points
- Make a HQ formation for 450 points, with 5 Chimeras a Supreme Commander rather than a Commander.

In terms of other formations/upgrades, I don't see the need to change much; except dropping Guard Platoons (unless it's changed for 4 Storm Trooper/Vostroyan units), and maybe altering Fire Support platoons slightly to make them more Vostroyan like (e.g. 5+ armour, Heavy Bolters or Lascannons, higher points cost).

Okay, critique/alter/edit away! :D

Thanks for looking :cool:

Sounds good to me ... does anyone do 6mm Cossack Infantry ... instead of the Green stuff option ?  Either ... go for it ! :)

Well converting the infantry might not be all that hard after all. I think you might make passable hats by adding a small ball of green stuff to the helmets of some longcoat IG. Leave the GS to dry and chop of the top to make a flat top of the cossack hat. Might not be the best option if you plan to have several hundred stands of infantry though :D

I was thinking that the Heavy Elite Imperial Guard Infantry would be the Cadian shock troops with a focus on the Karskin.  But that is just my idea.

@ WMN: exactly what I was thinking - but you're right, the idea of doing it to 150 of them isn't exactly one that fills me with glee...

@ orangesm: Cadian's are a good idea, only prob is that we currently don't have any GW Cadian Epic minis; though you could use DRM Human infantry.  I just thought that Vostroyans would be good for 1) the conversion possibilities (not too difficult witht he existing minis produced by GW, and 2) it is entirely Heavy Infantry.

But I'm glad that someone else sees that the lack of a Heavy Infantry Guard army in Epic is a hole which needs filling. :)

If you've got the current IG 40k Codex, they have Carapace Armour (4+ armour save), 'Sharp Shooter' Skill (re-roll misses on a D6 roll of 1), 'Hardened Fighters' skill (+1 to Weapon Skill), Iron Discipline for the officers and Die Hards (they don't run so easily from combat) IIRC...  So they are quite an elite Guard regiment, with access to better training and equipment.

In their background, they have ties to the Ad Mech, their home world has a reputation for making high-quality weaponry; they're called the 'First Born' because of a law which decrees every first born son in every family is automatically inducted in to the planet's Guard Regiment.

TRC - To add to what already has been said, they are G/W's sci-fi version of Cossacks, more or less. They have some AFVs like most of the IG. They did a few articles on them in W/D last year. I'm not overly impressed with the Fluff as usual. And they look too 19th Century for my tastes.  But I still still say go for it, F/S !  And S/G DoK with with green stuff hats is another option !  :)
