I'm still new here so this might be in the wrong place, but I played two small games with IG vs Marine and the Vultur squadrons seem to be alittle under pointed. Two squadrons have the ability to make back double there points in the first round of combat. What do the people here think? Oh I was playing EpicA.

Were you using the new version of the pop up rules?

Vultures are potent but are also very vulnerable - especially as IG will rarely win the initiative.

As for 2 squadrons being able to kill double their points in the first turn - after that first shot they are limited - anyway a lot of units could say the same thing

Vultures are fairly nice, but the only really exceedingly powerful ability they have is the pop-up attack which lets them see over terrain. The extreme range on their missiles are fairly nice too, but even then it's not that big a deal. Tau Broadsides have 2x AT 2+, and they don't have One-Shot. There're several others who can do that kind of fire-power at long range too. Mostly it seems like their ability to fire over most terrain seems to do it the worst. Really, though, they're not that hard to stop. I like taking extremely long-range weapons (Especially BP weapons like Quake Cannons or basilisks) put them on Overwatch. Let the enemy pop up and react to it with overwatch fire to flatten their unit. Anything with about a 75cm range can do it, and if it can garrison just put your blitz somewhere near the mid-board and garrison them on it on Overwatch. Even first-turn pop-up lets you fire on them before they fire on you.

When I have fielded Vultures in the Elysian list, invariably someone makes the mistake of thinking through what their overall capabilities are.

KEY POINT: Don't leave armor units out in the open on your baseline and think that they are safe. They are not as you have discovered.

However, as pointed out by others, once you have experienced the joy (or pain) of that attack, the lesson does not have to be relearned.

Unless you are like one of the old players we have around here and need to relearn it over and over and over........   :o0

I used the rules from the rule book and I was out of range of any counter fire to prevent the attack. Maybe its just me but molesting two different Land Raider units was a harsh lesson.

I think the sad, terrible lesson is more how vulnerable Land Raiders actually are... to any kind of massed AT attack...  :(

What is really sad is the way GW has taken the Land Raider and turned it into little more then a oversized APC.

I remember when it was the King of AFVs.  :D

I'll agree with the general thinking here.

With the experimental skimmer rules in mind (i.e. cannot sustain fire to pop-up, so no +1 to hit and you must be on movement orders) the real problem in your situation is the LR.

The LR has been religated to little more than expensive heavy transport that still blows up just as good as the rest of transports in the game.

At the E:A scale, it just doesn't get any better. Perhaps worse in fact.

:(
