So after TRC's comment about a War Engine heavy Chaos army list... I decided to see what an IG army list built along similar lines might look like. Here's what I came up with:

Super-Heavy Tank Company: 3x Baneblade (500), 1x Hydra (50)

Super-Heavy Tank Company: 3x Baneblade (500), 1x Hydra (50)

Super-Heavy Tank Company: 3x Shadowswords (500)

Warhound (250)

Warhound (250)

Warhound (250)

Warhound (250)

Super-Heavy Tank Platoon: 1x Shadowsword (200)

Super-Heavy Tank Platoon: 1x Shadowsword (200)

Total: 3000 Points.

That's a total of 9 activations at 3000 points. And only 2 models that arn't WEs. Dunno if it'd do that well, but it looks fantastic on paper. 5 TK (D3) shots along with plenty of AP/AT shots...

Unlike the CSM your activations are mostly 2+, also you have two joint BTS formations and your flak can't cover the army.

Further the Baneblade is a bit poor, you might kill more with nothing but shadowswords!

I started with something like this until I realised that I'd need flak and an SC.

Ended up with the list posted elsewhere on this forum.

It's possible. I also considered doing something like spending 200 of the last 300 points to add some normal tanks to one of the SHT Companies. Fielding all-shadowswords is possible as well, though most people would be really pissed if I did. Since that's a LOT of TK weapons carving up enemy forces.

The Initiative issue could be a problem, but I've never had significant problems with units which are 2+ initiative, may just be me though. The Chaos list reads really weird in that regard. They're all Initiative 2+, but get +1 if not with 30cm of a rival power... Reads strangely to me.

It probably wouldn't be as good a list as it first appears I suppose, I was mostly just wondering how many War Engines you could squeeze into an IG army while still being reasonably effective.
